《Safe Haven》Chapter Nineteen

When my last class on Friday is finally over I almost let out a scream of relief. I grab my things and race back to my room. I throw my bag on my desk and, before I could get inside my bathroom for a shower, I hear my phone buzzing.

hey

jess has a 'friend' over and

kicked me out

can i crash with you?

Of course

Are you coming right now?

I was about to take a shower

i can wait

it's ok

No

The door is unlocked

Just come in

ok

I take a quick shower and when I get out of the bathroom in my pajamas, Jamie is already on my bed.

"So who is Jess' 'friend'? Do I know him?"

"I don't even know who it is. She kicked me out before he arrived and I wasn't feeling like spying on her."

"I guess it's our new mission then." We both laugh.

"Thanks for saving my ass tonight. I didn't want to bother you 'cause I know I've been sleeping here a lot, but my only other option was my car and I really don't want to wake up with my whole body in pain."

"Hey, mi casa és su casa."

"I'm still waiting for the day you'll teach me Spanish."

"We already tried it and it didn't work, remember?"

"Of course it didn't work! You just started speaking Spanish and refused to explain what you were saying!"

"It's not my fault you can't keep up."

"How could I keep up when you were sprinting and I couldn't even walk?" I just shrug. "I can barely crawl. I only know a handful of words and phrases."

"We can go from there." I take a sit next to her. "Go for it."

"Hola, me llamo Jamie." Her accent is thick and I giggle. "Hey! I'm trying here! Not everyone is bilingual, you know."

"Perdón. I'll behave." I clear my throat and turn back to her. "Hola, Jamie, yo soy Allie. ¿Cómo estás?"

"Estoy tired." I laugh hard at her answer. "When I said I wanted to learn Spanish I didn't mean today."

"Ok, vamos a dormir then."

"What?"

"Buenas noches, Jamie." I turn off the lights and make my way back to bed.

"Buenas noches, Allie."

I wake up and turn my head to see Jamie is waking up too.

"Morning." She yawns and turn to me smiling.

"Buenos días." I smile back and stare at the ceiling.

"It's too early for Spanish." She grunts and I laugh.

"Do we have to wake up? I'm beat. I've had so many tests this week I think my brain may have actually fried."

"Well, it is Saturday. So I guess you can go back to sleep." She laughs and turns to lay of her side to face me.

"I don't think I can sleep anymore either." I laugh and mirror her moves.

"Ok... then what do you want to do?"

"I don't know." I frown and she laughs even more. My eyes trail down her face and focus on her her. "Did you do something with your hair? It looks really good." I reach my right hand to grab a strand and run my fingers through it.

She stays silent for a few seconds, so I turn my gaze back to her brown eyes. "I... no, it's the same..." she frowns a little and turns to lay on her back.

"Is everything ok? Did I say anything wrong? I just thought your hair looked good, that's all."

"It's fine." She turns her face towards me and locks her eyes with mine for a few seconds before getting off the bed. "I just have to go now."

"What? You have to go?" I get up as well and walk around the bed to get to her while she's picking up her stuff. "Jamie, what's going on? What did I do?" I grab her wrist and she stops moving to look into my eyes.

"It's ok. You didn't do anything." She places her free hand on top of mine. "It's me. And I have to go now." She pulls my hand off her and walks to the door.

"No, you don't." I run and hold the door closed. "Jamie." I try to turn her to face me, but she stands still facing the door with her hand on the doorknob. "Jamie, look at me." She slowly turns around, but her eyes don't meet mine. "Please talk to me. Did I do anything wrong? Or is there anything I can do to help? I-" I huff and run my free hand though my hair. "What's going on?"

The room falls silent.

Her eyes never meet mine, but she lets go of the door. I keep all of my attention her, trying to understand what is going through her mind.

She runs both hands though her face and sighs. "Fuck," she whispers. When she finally looks at me, her eyes are filled with fear and defeat. "This." I frown. "This," she motions to the two of us "is what's going on."

I shake my head. "Jamie, I don't-"

"I like you, Allie." She cuts me off and I go silent. "I really like you. Not just as a friend."

The world stops moving.

Time stands still.

There isn't a sound to be heard.

I just stare at her trying to process her words and figuring out if she really said them.

"And I know it's not a good time. I know it hasn't been long since you broke up with Matt and all of that happened. And I know it's not fair for me to just throw all of this on you, but-" her eyes shoot up to meet mine. "I really care about you. You're one of my best friends and you mean the world to me. But I can't help how I feel." She starts tearing up and my heart gets heavier by the second. "This is probably not the best time to tell you this, but that's how I feel."

It takes me a while to finally find my voice. "Jamie, I-"

"I should go now." She cuts me as she opens the door and looks at me one more time. "Bye, Allie."

I just stand there. Staring at the door.

What the hell just happened?
