《Safe Haven》Chapter Eighteen

I can't sleep.

Everything that happened after the movie ended keeps racing inside my head and if I was tired before, I'm not even a little bit right now. I keep my eyes focused on the window beside my bed and my back is turned to her.

Every single thought in my head is about Jamie. About how she's been helping me, how she stood up to Matt the other day, how she takes care of me, how she keeps reassuring me about everything and makes me feel safe, how she looks at me and never once showed pity for me, like a lot a people would have, how she makes me feel when we are together. How I felt when she changed her clothes in front of me.

I lay flat on my back and sigh. Why do I keep thinking about this? I turn around and look at her face. She's so pretty. She's always been pretty, so why am I thinking about this right now?

Fuck.

I get up and go to the bathroom. I lock the door behind me and splash some water on my face. I need to get my shit together. I put the toilet lid down and sit on it. My hands rub my face in a failed attempt to rub those thoughts off of my head.

I almost fall to the ground when I hear a knock on the door. "Allie, you ok in there?"

Why, God, why? Isn't it enough that I'm freaking out about her? She also has to be awake while my head is almost exploding?

"Yeah, I'll be out in a sec." I take a deep breath and unlock the door.

She winces at the light when it hits her face. "You've been in there for a while."

"Sorry, did you want to go in?"

"No, I was just worried."

"Oh." I just look at her. "I couldn't sleep, so I just washed my face to try to summon slumber."

"I haven't slept either. Maybe we can talk a little until we're tired enough." She walks back to the bed and lays down. "Are you just going to stand there?" She laughs.

I get back to my spot and get under the cover. I turn to face her and instantly curse myself. Looking at her is not what I need to get my mind off of her and get some sleep.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" She asks.

"I don't know..."

"That's a good topic." We both giggle. "Why can't you sleep?" Shit.

"I... my mind is full right now." Not a lie

"Tell me what's filling it." Double shit.

"Just the tests I'll have this week." I frown with my lame excuse. "It's a lot and it all just came crashing down all at once in my head right now."

"This week is going to be busy." Thank God she doesn't notice my lie. "But I know you'll be just fine. You always are." She smiles and I find my eyes getting glued to her lips.

Get it together, Allison!

"Still, it's making my mind go a thousand miles per minute."

"Ok. How about I tell you about the time this random guy flashed me and my dad because my dad said he liked the guy's rollerblades."

"What the fuck?" I laugh and she starts telling me the story.

Not long after that I feel myself drifting off and finally getting some sleep.

The week is an insanity with all of the things I have to do, so my mind has no time to think of anything other than the tests. I barely get to see the girls because all my teachers seem to have lost their minds all at once and I can't get a moment to myself.

Daisy tries to help me relax a little with a quick trip to an open market in a park nearby on our day off. A lot of local artists come here to sell their work and I find myself getting lost in a couple different stands.

"Allie, look at these earrings! Aren't they amazing? This girl-" she points towards a girl that couldn't be much older than us. "Sorry, I didn't catch your name."

"It's Dani."

"Nice to meet you, Dani. I'm Daisy." She turns back to me. "Anyway, Dani makes all of these earrings by hand and they're all made of glass and they are just incredible! Look at them!" I see Dani blushing a little and I laugh at Daisy's excitement.

I approach the stand to get a better look at the jewelry and instantly fall in love with them. "Oh my God, Dani! They are so beautiful!"

"Thank you."

I grab a pair of dark red earrings that were teardrop shaped. I take a closer look to see the small veins with different shades inside of it. "I'm taking these." I hand them to Dani and pay her.

We say goodbye and walk around a little bit more.

"You never told me how that party on Saturday went." I turn to Daisy as we sit down on a bench of the edge of the park.

"It was cool at first, but then everyone disappeared. I didn't see Jess for almost a full hour and Scott said he found some friends and was going to say hi, but showed up, like, ages later and said they lost track of time while they were talking. I found some people I knew and hung out with them, but still, I was abandoned."

"That sucks." I grab my phone to look at the time and see it's nearing 8pm. "We should head back. We still have to eat and I have my last test tomorrow morning."

"Let's go then. I really need to get some food in my stomach before I pass out."

"I don't think I'll ever get over how dramatic you are." I laugh.

"And I don't think you'd enjoy your life without me in it." She sticks her nose up in the air and I laugh harder.

"You're right. What would I do without you?"

"Lucky for you, you won't have to find out because you're stuck with me for the rest of your life." She grabs my arm and starts pulling me. "Now let's go get that food."
