《Bathilda the Bat》Echo

The light of the cosmos is a sight to behold all on its own. Never before had she witnessed something so beautiful in all her life. The dazzling spectacle was short lived though. Bathilda's light arrived at her new home faster than she thought she would and was suddenly encased in darkness before being dragged into the soil beneath it.
As her light disappeared, Bathilda's new body was created within a small cave, inside a dark forest. Unbeknown to her, she is a long way away from anyone she could possibly help.
She opens her eyes only to be greeted by more darkness.
Stumbling before falling face down on the floor, she tries to get a feel for her new body, which is clearly no longer human.
She then attempts to speak, but fails the task and instead hears a soft chirping sound emerge from her mouth followed by a short set of angry clicks.
'Why can't I speak? And why is it so damn dark?'
Worried that there was a problem with her reincarnation she checks out the rest of her body, if she can still call it that. The bountiful curves that were featured on her chest are no longer present and instead she is covered in a soft, fur-like material all over her body. Her face feels as though it has been pulled outwards and teeth fill a much-larger mouth than she knows how to use.
Whatever she's become, she knows that they have adapted to tearing food apart with their teeth as the little hands she now possesses won't be much help in a contest of strength. They feel longer than they should be even though she seems to be smaller than she was before. Every proportion of what she knew to be her body is now wrong.
'Okay, there's got to be a good reason for why I feel like I'm wearing a wingsuit. The problem is, I can't see anything down here to work out why.'
After debating with herself for a moment, Bathilda calls out as loud as she can even though she knows she can't communicate properly. At least the effort is worth more than doing nothing, or so she believes. Her idea pays off, not in the way of a response but in the form of an X-ray like picture broadcast to her mind showing her the immediate locale and everything in it.

'Everything' is actually quite a lot in this situation. Bathilda can see every single creature skittering around on the dirt floor. In the ground below her, around her and even down the two adjacent tunnels running off the room she is currently inside of.
Her new picture image also shows the outline of a larger creature further down the passage to her right-hand side. By larger she estimates it to be easily ten times her height and she has only just realised how tall the roof is in her own room.
'Why the hell is it so high? And what the hell is that big thing down there?'
She questions herself before stumbling, crawling and jumping down the path to the left. Her small bodies, even smaller heart pounds away at the thought of the enormous unknown.
'That guy's huge! Way bigger than I am so he can probably take care of himself. I'll go this way.'
Deciding on her course of action, fleeing, she relearns how to crawl in her new body as it is the easiest of the three ways to travel she knows of at the moment.
'This doesn't seem right does it? Did I get tricked by those guys back there? Is this how a second life is supposed to start?'
More questions fill her mind as she panics whilst crawling along the dirt floor.
'Where the hell am I,' she tries to shout out and receives another picture update for her troubles. This time however it is followed by something new.
Echolocation has reached Level 2
Bathilda has reached Level 2
Skill: Chomp has been acquired
'Chomp skill? Level? They didn't mention that either. What the hell did they turn me into? Am I supposed to go round helping people by chomping them to death!? What sort of joke is this?'
Almost feeling overloaded at the amount of questions she's harbouring, Bathilda presses on through the dirt. The strange level up brought her a burst of newfound strength and she trudges on, away from the large creature she is making distance from.

'So it's more game-like than they told me here. I actually have a level and skills too, not that I didn't have skills before, I was fantastic at my job. This strange situation was not what I expected when they sent me to my new world.'
Swerving the now-clearly visible rocks and foliage, Bathilda makes good time crawling down the tunnel. Using her skill for a third time she can no longer see the much larger creature behind her. Feeling her tiny heart calm itself at the prospect of escaping the unknown, she continues down the only path available to her.
In this time she regains her senses. Now that fear isn't the driving factor Bathilda can make out where her vision ends and realises she has no need to use her mapping skill until the previous one has run its course.
Not long after she reaches the boundary, the next use of her skill shows a split in the path ahead. The one on the left leads to a hole in the floor with a tunnel on the opposite side. It's a jump she has no hope of making, once more forcing her to head in one direction.
If anything were to appear before her now, Bathilda would be trapped between it and the other extremely large 'it' behind her.
'Crap. Shit. Stupid tunnel.'
Cursing her location she steadies her nerves and heads further down the rabbit hole. Another scan brings another upgrade for her Echolocation, which seems to improve the radius.
'Oh Shit!'
With the range of her perceptive field of view now doubled, Bathilda slowly starts to edge back the way she came. This act is a terribly difficult feat at which she also fails, stumbling over her unfamiliar body once more. With full blown panic setting in and not even attempting to look behind her, Bathilda scampers back the way she came with as much gusto as she can afford.
In her head, she is hoping the large snake-like creature that was travelling in the opposite direction, didn't notice her approach. After a few seconds of crawling she affords herself a new Echolocation.
'Fuck. I shouldn't have looked. I shouldn't have looked!' she screams, letting off another map image. Or previous in the case of the direction she is now travelling. Attempting little jumps as she runs, stumbles and crawls with all the speed afforded to a tiny demon, her arms, or wing-like appenditures gather the wind with each jump she attempts pushing her slightly further forward.
'Now I learn how to move properly? What the hell is up with this place?" With the split tunnel just before her, Bathilda takes the one that doesn't lead to Godzilla just as the large snake lunges forward, missing her by inches and landing just past the turn.
With precious seconds earned Bathilda is jump flapping her way towards the large hole she is hoping to jump over.
Skill: Flight has been Acquired
Bathilda has reached Level 3
Skill: Chomp has reached Level 2
'How is Chomp Level 2? I haven't even used it? Is it because my teeth are chattering? And what the hell? Flight? Is that what I'm actually doing? Are these things actually wings? I wish I wasn't in a dark cave being chased by a large snake! Fuck it. Here we go!' With those as her last words, Bathilda leaps over the hole the best she can with her new body, arms spread wide hoping to gather as much momentum as she can.
Sadly for her though, that's not how wings are supposed to be used but how would she know that. She was a nurse, that's now a bat, who is falling down an extremely-large hole beside the predator that foolishly lunged down after what it still regards as dinner.
What a strange new life.

Dungeon Darwinism: Deepest Dungeon
Dungeons are a lot like sea turtles. They’re born in clutches of dozens, if not hundreds. A hundred may be born at one time, buried in still burning cities, or in forests where the canopy hides the sky, or in ocean trenches at the bottom of the sea. But only one in a clutch ever makes it to the surface. Everyone knows about dungeons— monstrous factories that emerge out of the earth, full of riches and Arcana and power— and monsters. But most of humanity only know about the dungeons that make it. Mark doesn’t know anything about dungeons. He isn’t from this world, and only as a victim of circumstance has he become an unwilling half of a dungeoncore. The other half is a Dark Lord. (Rewrite)
