《The Thunderbirds and The Phoenix》Chapter Five

It's just a normal day. Well as normal as it will ever be for the Thunderbirds. Alan's been away at boarding school, but he's coming home tonight. He's been doing really well so he deserves a break. John has been busy, running TB5 is hard. Thankfully he gets the time to come down and take a break to relax with me. John also comes with me to all of Alan's parent teacher interviews and other events. The only time Jeff is called by the school is for when Ali gets into trouble. Today, it's been quiet, so I've been sitting on a sun lounger, reading a new book John recommended, as Gordon swims in the pool. Unfortunately, as I'm reading, the klaxon sounds from the hidden speakers. I throw Gordon a towel as we run to Jeff's office. We get into our chutes and head out, Scott and Gordon in TB1, Virgil, Jeff and I in TB2. This time we were called out to Russia, an oil rig had caught on fire.

"TB2 from TB1, I have visual south coast, they're trapped on an inspection platform." Scott announces over the comm.

"F.A.B., we'll take it from here." Jeff replies. I can see the men are attempting to climb higher up and get off the platform, but the explosions continue. A tower becomes engulfed in flames. Jeff's keen eyes spotted the tower quickly. "Scott, Gordon get out of there, that tower's coming down." Jeff urges

"Got it." Gordon declares, pulling TB1 back as the tower falls down and hovers over the water.

"TB1 any damage?" I inquire.

"Negative Nix." Scott replies.

"Approach angle's no good, we're going to have to swing around." Jeff declares. I can vaguely hear Scott warn Jeff "Watch for the wind shear, TB2"

Jeff sasses back with "Scotty, I was watching the wind shear when you were still wearing diapers." Gordon then goes "Ohhh! Scotty you just got burnt!" Suddenly, another explosion occurs, rocking TB2. "Woah, hold on!" Virgil exclaims.

"Who needs the diapers now, dad?" Gordon sasses. Jeff ignores them, turning to face me. "Drop the rescue platform, Phoenix." He commands.

"Aye sir." I salute, turning to the controls. I can hear Virgil announce "Open them up, here we go. Rescue platform's on its way."

"Virgil, how's it going?" I ask

"It's looking good Nix!" He reports, "Ok, I've got a visual, hold it there." He quickly locks on the targets, "Targets locked. Firing rescue lines." He announces as six lines are fired, hitting each man. "Come guys, hook 'em up." Virgil announces.

When they were ready, Virgil gives us the go ahead. "Let's haul them out of there." Jeff declares. "Ok, let's bring 'em home." Suddenly, an explosion rocks the ship, lowering the rescue platform slightly. "Whoa, sorry boys, hold on tight, here we go!" I announce over the speaker, pressing the button to make the platform rise.

"How you doing, Son?" Jeff inquirers.

"Never better!" Virgil replies. Jeff immediately turns to the microphone when the men are out of danger. "TB1, commence knockdown procedure" he commands.

"F.A.B. TB2." Scott replies. A section opens on the underside of Thunderbird One. "Fire." Gordon announces. A rocket is fired, hitting the oil rig and the fire is extinguished. I hear Vigil go all cowboy on us with a "Yee-ha!"

"Bulls eye! Outstanding shot! Alright boys and lady, let's take these babies home." Jeff announces, flying towards the nearest hospital. I doze off slightly, but once we are enroute home, Virgil wakes me up.

When we were in sight of Tracy Island, Scott announces "Radar indicates that we've got company, it's FAB1." As we fly alongside the pink car, I spot Alan, who starts waving vigorously. I wave back, as Jeff salutes him. Being the show offs they are, Scott and Gordon weave TB1 under TB2, then over, spinning TB1 as they do so. "Show offs." I mutter.

"Hey Dad, you up for a race home?" Gordon calls over the comm.

"Your on! First one in the living room wins." Jeff declares, putting the accelerator to max. Obviously we won. Brains immediately starts to question Jeff on the Thunderbirds and if they needed to be looked at. I ignore their conversation, spotting Alan walk through the door. "Phoenix!" Alan exclaims, running towards me at full force.

"Alan!" I call. Alan crashes into me, giving me a massive hug. "Let's take a look at you." I pulled away from the hug and scan over him, noticing that his hair has gotten longer. "We're going to need to cut your hair before you go back, ok?" I ask.

"Sure, I was going to ask anyway." Alan nods. Then the other Tracy's enter the kitchen, being the hungry men they are.

They notice Alan and come over. "Hey Sprout." Virgil says, ruffling his hair before giving Fermat a high five.

"Hey buddy." Scott smiles, also ruffling Alan's hair.

"Come and get it!" Onaha shouts.

"Onaha, it smells delicious, I'm starving." Jeff exclaims, entering the kitchen. When we're seated at the table, Alan starts to ask about the mission. "Dad, I saw the mission on TV. It looked pretty dangerous." Alan says. Jeff pours himself a drink before replying to Alan.

"Saving lives is a dangerous business, but it's what we do." He declares, patting Alan on his shoulder. The rest of the Tracy brother sit down at the table. "Do you think the fire was caused from thermal up cast? I mean that would explain the whole thing-" Alan starts, but Jeff cuts him off. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Enough shop talk, I wanna hear about school." He asks.

"School's boring. Plus I've been thinking, maybe I could be home educated now, that way I could sit in on missions from time to time. What do you think?" Alan announces

"No shortcuts Alan. No school, no rockets. Say, why aren't you wearing your retainer." He asks, changing the topic. I pat Alan's shoulder and give him the 'Tell-me-later' look. Then we listen to the other's conversation.

"So I'm getting this reading, telling the wind is blowing 60 knots right up my Keister." Scott narrates.

"No kidding." Gordon sarcastically exclaims.

"Did you try readjusting the flaps?" Alan asks, wanting to be involved in the conversation.

"Well that's the first thing I did, Sprout. It's not my first day on a Thunderbird you know." Scott jokes.

"Try to keep up." Gordon teases Alan, patting him on the back.

"Yeah, don't you have homework to do or something?" Virgil asks.

"Unless he blown up this school like the last one."Gordon laughs.

"Yeah keep Alan away from the ships, he's a hazard." Scott announces.

"Ok, that's enough. Pass the salad." Jeff commands, seeing my agitated face, handing the salad to Gordon, who offers it around the table.

"Man, I haven't seen that much fire since that volcano erupted in Fiji." Virgil exclaims.

"That wasn't Fiji, that was Istanbul!" Gordon argues.

"No, no, Istanbul was the earthquake." Virgil yells

"Yeah, well nothing compares to Argentina." Scott butts in.

"Dad I'm not really hungry. Come on Fermat, let's go." Alan states, getting up. I grip his arm and whisper in his ear, "When I'm done, I'll meet you in my room." Then I let go. Alan leaves the room as we all watch him. "But- you- I... I'm not done." Fermat exclaims. Brains motions for him to follow. "Ok." Fermat sighs, grabbing some chips off his plate. The room goes quiet for a couple of seconds before the previous conversation restarts. I ignore it and quickly eat my lunch before heading up to my room.

Since Alan isn't up in my room yet, I decide to call John. "Hey, how was your day today?" I ask.

"Ok, though I received information from Lady Penelope saying that the oil rig was no accident. She's going to look into it and keep us updated. Now, how was your day?" John smiles.

"Oh, the normal. Peaceful morning, I was reading my book for a majority of the day until a certain oil rig decided that it wanted a visit from us. Also, Ali's back for spring break. I got another email from his teacher, I'm sure that you got it too. He's top of his class, excelling in engineering, but likes to daydream quite a bit. Also, he needs his hair cut." I report.

"Yeah, I got the email. I'm so proud of him. Where is he? He doesn't normally want to skip one of my calls." John inquires.

"I don't know. The rest of the Tracy's were giving him a hard time at dinner, so he and Fermat left, but I told him to meet me up in my room before he left. He must have taken a walk or gone somewhere with Fermat." I reply.

"Ok, well I'll call him later if I get the chance. Now, how are you holding up? I'll be back down in a couple of weeks, so we don't have much longer to wait." John sincerely asks. When I go to reply to John, an alarm starts to go off. I recognise it as TB1's alarms, however, I see Scott run past my door, so he couldn't possibly be taking off. John turns around to a separate screen which were showing the security cameras from the island.

Sighing and shaking his head, John turns back to face me. "It was Alan and Fermat, they must have slipped into TB1's silo and flicked the wrong switches. I better go and check on dad. Give Ali my love, ok? Love you Nix." John smiles.

"Will do, I promise. Night John, love you too." I smile back. Then the screen on my laptop fades to black before returning to my home screen. It's a picture of John, Ali and I down at the beach just days before John left for TB5. John and I had fallen asleep so Ali had covered our legs, chest and arms in sand, shaping it to make us look like a mermaid and a merman. Grandma Tracy had been very sneaky and had taken it without us noticing. She had given it to me shortly after John had left. I laugh at the fond memories that the photo brings to mind. There was the time Ali had defeated the two of us in dodgeball, the time John had the bright idea to dive from a cliff and had ended at the other side of the island thanks to the current, and even the time I had fallen asleep, so the two boys thought that it would be funny to wake me by throwing me into the ocean. I'm brought out of my reverie by an angry Alan storming into my room and flopping into my bed. "What's up Ali?" I ask.

"Not much. I just got grounded by dad for the rest of spring break. What's up with you?" Ali asks.

"Not much either. Just called John, he says hi and that he loves you. He'll probably ring you in a bit. Now, I have some more music for you to learn on your guitar. Which one first, 'Shape of You', 'Let Her Go', 'Galway Girl', or 'The Scientist'?" I ask.

"I think I'll start with 'Galway Girl', followed by 'The Scientist', what about you? You have to learn the lyrics to something!" Ali insists.

"Well, ok. I'll start with 'Radioactive' followed by 'Seven Years', are they ok?" I ask.

"Those seem fine, now let's get started." Ali exclaims. Alan tunes his guitar as I close my balcony doors, my bedroom door and my window. I can't let anyone listen in, can I? I grab my lyric sheets and set up Alan's music stand, as Alan grabs my guitar. We start to practice, but we are interrupted by John facetiming me over my laptop. We chatted for awhile and practice with John, who helps us and gives us pointers. All too soon, it's time for bed. I put all the musical equipment away at Ali puts the music sheets in one of my folders labeled 'Music'. I say goodnight to John before ending the facetime and sending Ali off to bed. I quickly change into my cozy pj's before going to bed.
