《The Player Broke My Leg》Chapter 14

I had manage to get at least five blocks away before I had to stop. My body was screaming in protest as I got farther and farther from the diner. The tears that I had tried so desperately to keep in finally started to fall. I leaned my back against the wall and placed my head in my hands.
How could I have been so stupid? Evan was just using me to get what he wanted, and I was a fool not to see it. I was destined to never be happy.
I reached down to get my purse, but all I felt was air. At first I thought I dropped it on the street somewhere, but I quickly remembered I had left it in the booth. I was only going to the restroom, I wouldn't need my purse there.
Since I had no phone, no money, and not even the keys to my house, I only had two options. Either I could walk the two miles home and knock on the Kings door to get the spare key and get my purse in the morning, or I could go back to the diner.
A glob of milkshake slipped off my shirt and onto the concrete sidewalk below. I couldn't go back to the diner. Not like this. Using the back of my sleeve, I wiped my tears and started to walk back down the road. Hopefully I could find a payphone so I could call Emily and have her pick me up.
"HATTIE," someone yells behind me. I turned to see Evan running down the street with my purse on is shoulder and his stuffed bat in one hand. By the time he reached me, he was out of breath. "Why...did you....leave?"
I didn't say anything as he looked me up and down. His eyes landed on the big stain on my shirt, then they went up to my tear stained face. He straightened up when I didn't say anything.
"Hattie..." Evan says softly as he reached out to touch my face, but I flinched and took a step back. "Hattie? What's wrong? Talk to me."
"Why?" I ask. My voice cracked when I said that. "So you can lie to me again?"
"Lie to you?" Evan stated in confusion as he shook his head. "I have never lied to you. Well, maybe when I said that I wanted the pink bat instead of the brown one. Is this why your mad?"
"You were using me," I say. The tears started to come out harder. My whole body was shaking, so I grabbed the nearby wall for support.
"What are you talking about? I would never do that to you," Evan said gently as if trying to calm me down.
"Then tell me the reason why you broke up with Lizzie," I demand as I look him into his eyes.
Evan blinked in confusion. "Lizzie? What does she have to do with this?"
"Victoria told me," I yell through the tears. "She told me that you dumped her since she wouldn't put out and you're just using me to get what you wanted."
Evan stared at me quietly before started to laugh. I look at him in utter shock. Not even two seconds ago I found out his plan and now he's laughing at me?
"Hattie, our breakup was mutual. Remember when I said that me and her wanted different things?" He asked. I nodded my head as I recalled the night when Evan stood on my door step. "Well, Lizzie wanted the captain of the girls volleyball team."

"What?" I questioned as the tears stopped. Am I the asshole for blowing things out of proportion?
"Lizzie is into girls," he said with a smile. "Victoria was lying to you."
My jaw dropped when Evan told me that. Was Victoria lying? Wait, of course she would lie to me. How could I be so stupid? She thrived off my pain. It was like a drug to her. Since she saw that I was actually happy for once, she took it upon herself to nip it in the bud.
"I feel like such a jerk," I groan and I let my head hang low. "You must hate me now. I'd understand if you do."
Evan looked at me softly before reaching over to place his hand on the back of my head. "How could I hate you? I mean, your on thin ice because you made me leave behind a perfectly good burger."
I couldn't help but laugh. "How did you know I was gone?"
"Our waitress told me some girl dump her milkshake all over you and you ran out the door," Evan told me as he removed his hand from my head and cupped my cheek with it instead. "I should have known something was going to happen when I saw Victoria get up. I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you."
"Its okay, you didn't know it would happen," I say as I look him in the eyes. "I'll get my revenge someday."
"Well, what would you say if I told you I kinda got revenge on them already?"
I furrowed my brows in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"When I was walking past Victoria, I may or may not have taken the ketchup bottle off the table and squirted her with it," Evan shrugs.
"You did what?" I asked is disbelief.
"Yeah," he said as he pulled his hand into his pocket and pulled out his phone. After he unlocked it, he turned it around.
A video of Victoria talking to the others played on the screen. As if she could sense someone besides her, she turned around and was instantly sprayed with ketchup. She screamed as it happened and I smiled. It was all over her face, in her hair, and all over clothes.
"There's no saving that cashmere sweater," I giggled as the video came to an end. "Can you send that to me."
"Yeah," he nodded as he tucked his phone back into his pocket. "I figured since she ruined your outfit, it's only fair to do the same to her."
I glanced down to look at the stain on my shirt. It had started to dry around the edges but it was starting to run down my legs.
"Come on, let's get you home," Evan says as he get stands next to me and led the way back to the car.
It wasn't that far to Evans car. When I left the diner, I had gone in the direction of the movie theater so we only had to go three blocks.
"I'm sorry for ruining tonight," I confess to Evan when we got to his car.
"You didn't ruin it," Evan said with a smile as he opened up the passenger seat for me. "You just made it interesting. I'll just have to make sure not to go anywhere that serves milkshakes next time."
"Next time?" I question as I sit and gently lift my leg into the car. "You want to go out again?"

"Are you asking me out?" Evan cracked a smile as he placed my crutches in the back seat behind me. "Of course I would. I think next time though we should just avoid all people though so we have no interruptions."
"That's works," I say as he shuts the passenger side door then walks around to the drivers side and gets in.
Evan turns the key and the car comes to life. The parking lot was deserted, and since there were no people running around it was easy to get out of the parking lot. As we passed the theater, my mind went to Spencer and Jess. Hopefully their date went better then mine.
"So, what are you doing tomorrow?" Evan asked as we pulled onto the street.
I glanced down at my shirt and cracked a smile. "Laundry."
Evan let out a chuckle as he kept his eyes on the road. "Good plan. You don't want that to stain. Hey, can I ask you something?"
"Um, sure," I say as I turned in my seat to face him.
"Why was Jasper at your house when I came to pick you up?"
"Oh, I didn't tell you," I said as the memory of that night with the Kings replayed in my head. "His parents are forcing him to be my butler."
Evan lets out a howl of laughter. "Okay, that's funny. You should make him wear a butler outfit or something."
"I've thought about it," I tell him.
"So what do you make him do?" He asked out of curiosity, but he still had a smile plastered on his face.
"He's basically in charge of cleaning, cooking, and making sure I don't kill myself from being bored to death," I say with a smile on my face. "Like, the other day I dropped lasagna on the floor, by accident of course, and he cleaned it up."
"Was it the lasagna that I brought?" He asked as he turned to face me before turning his attention back to the road.
"Sadly, it was. It ruined my whole day," I say as I remembered the tragic event of losing the precious food.
"How dare you," he gasped dramatically. "I guess I'll just have to bring you more then."
"Deal," I say quickly, causing him to let out a chuckle. Who would I be if I turned down free food?
The drive back was over before I knew it. The moment I saw my house, a feeling of dread washed over me. Soon enough, I would be by myself again.
Evan pulled into the driveway and turned the car off. It was like he could sense that I didn't want to be in the house. Or at least, I think so. No one can understand guys.
"Is something wrong?" He asked as he looked at me.
"No," I say as I start to get all my stuff put together. The milkshake started to smell and all I wanted was to change my shirt.
Evan didn't press on the issue. Instead, he got out of the car and went to the passenger door to open it for me. I grab my house keys out of my purse and hold on to them as I get out of the car.
"Thanks," I say as I get my crutches under me and start to walk to the front door with him by my side.
"You got everything?" Evan asks as we reach the front door.
"I think so," I say as I looked down. "Purse, keys, phone, caterpillar. The only thing missing is my dignity."
"You won't get that back. It's gone forever," Evan said with a smile as he looked me in the eyes. "I had a great time tonight."
"Me too, considering what happened tonight," I say a little embarrassed.
"Hopefully next time Victoria doesn't make any cameos," Evan said.
"Fingers crossed then," I say as I go to put the key in the lock. "Thanks for tonight. You saved me from watching an unhealthy amount of Netflix."
"Anytime," he says with a wink, causing my heart to flutter. "Well, I should let you go in and get changed."
"Yeah, that would be nice," I said as I went to reach for the door knob. "Let me now when you make it home so I know you're alive."
"Will do. Goodnight Hattie," he says with a warm smile appearing on his face
"Goodnight Evan," I said to him as I returned the smile. Evan waved as he stepped off the porch and started to walk back to the car. Just as I turned the knob to open the door, I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned to see Evan standing behind me with a weird expression on his face. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I just forget something," he said in a serious tone.
Before I could say anything, Evan took a step towards me and we were not even an inch apart. My heart started to beat faster as he wrapped his arms around my waist and places his hand on my lower back. With his other hand, he brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. His finger trailed along my jaw to my chin. Evans eyes flickered back and forth between my eyes and my lips.
Evan lowered his head and gently placed his lips on mine. I felt my face begin to flush and I close my eyes. He moved his mouth slightly, causing me to let out a small sound because it was a new sensation I was feeling. I lifted my hand to grasp on the sleeve of his shirt to keep myself from swaying. Evan smiled against my lips as he pulled me closer to him.
Evan pulled back from the kiss. The both of us were breathing heavily and neither one of us said anything at first. After a minute, Evan lifted his hand and placed it on my cheek.
"Wow," he said breathlessly and then smiled.
"Was it bad?" I asked as I bit my lower lip.
"What?" He asked in confusion. "No. It was great. Wait, was that your first kiss?"
"Yep," I say shyly.
"Well, thank you," he says with a smile.
I look at him in confusion. "For what?"
"For letting me be your first kiss," he said, his face blushing a bit.
"Oh, you're welcome, I guess."
Evan smiled as he dropped both of his arms and let them fall to his side. "You should go inside."
I nod my head as I go and open the door. After I step inside, I turned back to look at Evan. "Goodnight Evan."
"Goodnight Hattie," he says before he steps off the porch and goes back to his car.
I close the door and leaned my back against it. From inside, I could hear the car roar to life. I peek out the window on the door as I watched Evan back out of the driveway. As soon as he was out of sight, only on thing ran through my mind.
I just had my first kiss, and it was fantastic.
