《The Player Broke My Leg》Chapter 13

The lights slowly started to come back on as the credits started to roll. I turn my head to look at Evan. He looked just as shocked as I did.

"How could they kill a baby?" He asked, clearly dumbfounded.

"Maybe babies are high in fiber?" I guessed as I look around the theater. People are starting to leave, but they looked disturbed by what they had witnessed.

"Probably. I mean, I don't know what demons like. It could be part of a new fad diet," he suggested as he took our empty cups and placed them in the tub of popcorn that was filled with kernels.

"I can just imagine a grandma demon just keeping a pound of baby back ribs in her freezer now," I say sarcastically as I reach out and grab the bar in front of me before pulling myself up on my good leg.

"Well, thanks for the mental image," he says as he reached over to hand me one of the crutches that I had leaning on the chair. "I'm probably going to have nightmares tonight."

"Sucks to be you then," I said, which caused Evan to let out a laugh.

The both of us start to walk out of the row of seats and to the stairs. By the time we got there, everyone else had already left. Evan walked in front of me, but he had his body turned so he could help me make it down the stairs in one piece.

"I don't know about you, but I could go for a burger," Evan said as we walked side by side out into the hallway. As we passed a trashcan, he tossed the garage away but he kept a firm hold on the pink bat.

"You literally just ate that whole entire thing of popcorn," I say in disbelief. How could he still be hungry? Does he have a second stomach I don't know about?

"That was a snack," he waved off. Groups of teenagers and adults passed us with a second glance, but it still felt like their eyes were on me. "I'm going to go use the restroom. Will you be fine out here by yourself?"

I look at him and can't help but roll my eyes. "Yes, I think I can manage to be by myself for two minutes."

"Very funny," Evan winks before disappearing into a nearby bathroom. Right next to me, another movie let out. By the amount of people coming out, I could tell it was packed in there. I just kept my eyes on the ground to avoid anyone I might possibly know.

"Hattie?" Asked a deep voice that was really familiar. I looked up to see Spencer, one of the triplets. The only reason I knew it was him was because of the little scar he had right above his elbow.

"Hey Spencer," I say with a small wave.

"What happened to your leg?" He asked abruptly when he noticed the cast.

"Oh, it's broken," I say casually. I didn't really want to get into my leg story in the middle of a crowded movie theater. "How's working in the lumber yard?" I asked to steer the conversation away from me.

"It's fine," he said seriously. "What happened? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. It was a clean break so they just popped it back into place," I say as I avoid the first question.

"Hattie, what happened?" He asked again softly. "I'm your friend, right? You can tell me."

Friend? Were we friends? I mean, I liked hanging out with everyone from out lunch table. There were times if I were in the hallways being picked on, one of the boys would always swoop in and chase them away.

"I just fell," I said. In the corner of my eye, I saw Evan come out of the restroom, and before I knew it, he was by my side again.

"Hey Spencer," Evan said with a smile as stood next to me.

"Hey Evan," Spencer nodded, but didn't break eye contact with me. "Hattie, what's going on?"

"Nothing. I just fell. There's nothing more for me to say," I tell him in hopes that he would drop the subject.

Spencer huffed since he didn't get the information to what had happened. After a minute, he looked over at Evan, and then to me. "Are you two on a date?"

My face went red. Before I could say anything, Evan had already spoken up. "Yeah."

Spencer looked at Evan, and I knew he was going to try to get some information out of Evan. He was much taller than Evan. Evan probably stood about 5,10, while Spencer was at least 6,4. They even had different body types. Spencer was all muscle and that could be clearly seen since his black T-shirt clung to his body and everything could be seen. Evan, on the other hand, was more lean and I was pretty sure he wasn't that strong. It was clear that Spencer could take him in a fight, but I knew he wouldn't do anything. He was basically a teddy bear.

"Do you know what happened to Hattie's leg?" Spencer asked as he looked down at Evan, but he wasn't trying to intimate him. He was asking nicely.

"Yeah," Evan said as his smile turned to a frown. "Fucking Jasper made her fall out a window."

The look of pure anger washed over Spencers face and his whole body tensed. He looked like he was going to hit something, and I was starting to get worried about the safety of these walls since they might get a gaping hole in it soon.

"Babe," said a sudden voice that came out of nowhere. I look up to see a see a blond girl wearing a black dress and two nose rings come out of the bathroom. She placed her hand on his chest and he seemed to calm down. "What's going on? Why are you upset?"

"Nothing," Spencer says as he runs a hand through this hair. He then wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her close to him. "Jess, this is my friend Hattie. Hattie, this is my girlfriend Jess,"

I stared at him in disbelief. He and never mentioned a girl friend before.

"Nice to meet you," I say as I hold my hand out to her. Jess smiled as she took it.

"You too," she says with a bright smile before she turns to look at Evan. "Is this your boyfriend?"

"No," I say quickly. In the corner of my eye I saw Evans face. He kinda looked said when I said that. "Are you two having a date night?"

"Yeah, we just saw that romance movie with Sandra Bollock. It was so good," Jess said as she leaned her head against Spencer's shoulder. "Well, we'll let you two get back to your date. It was so nice meeting you two."

"You too. Spencer, tell your brothers I say hi," I tell him.

"I will," he said as he locked his hand together with Jess's. They only took a few steps before Spencer stopped and turned back around to look at me. "We'll talk more tomorrow about your leg, okay."

Before I could say anything, they were gone. I was confused though. He didn't have my number, and neither one of his brothers did. At least I think so. I just shrugged it off and looked at Evan.

"How do you know Spencer?" I asked out of curiosity. Never had I once seen those two talk to each other.

"He and I were chemistry partners this year. He's a really nice guy," Evan said with a smile. "However, I wished someone would have told me there where three of them. I can't tell you how many times I went up to him in the hall and started to talk about the chem homework. Whoever I was talking to had no clue who I was, and when I brought it up in class to him he didn't know what I was talking about."

"Yeah, but there are ways to tell them apart," I say as I begin to walk to the door with Evan walking by my side. "Darren is the with the pierced ear, Theo is the one with the Harry Potter tattoo sleeve, and Spencer has a scar on his right eyebrow."

"Okay then, I'll just use that system to figure out who's who," he says as we get out side. It was dark outside. Probably because it was a little after seven o'clock. The streets were filled with people walking up and down the streets. Since this was the busier side of town it was a lot more active. "There's a diner about two blocks from here. What to get some dinner?"

"Yeah, sure," I say as I start to walk to the sidewalk, but stopped short since Evan wasn't following me. I turned around to look at him. "What's wrong?"

"Don't you want to drive?" He asked as he motioned to the car. "Your leg..."

"It's two blocks. I think I can survive. If not, just leave me in the street and save yourself," I say sarcastically as I continue to walk so he had to jog to catch up.

It only took five minutes to get there, and Evan still kept an eye out for me to make sure I didn't fall. That was nice of him, and I'm pretty sure that's the first time a guy was actually nice to me.

We enter the diner and it was about full. There were people of all ages scattered around. There was a group of old ladies sitting in the back. Their white hair poked just above the booth and I could see them eating green jello while giggling. There was a family with three kids. The father was trying to get the one in the highchair to eat while the mother tried to get the other two kids to stop having sword fights with the butter knifes. Towards the front was a group of middle aged women with fancy clothes and big hair. They we're probably all named Karen, and they were probably going to complain about the food and the service and try to get free food.

"Two?" Asked a young girl probably about our age as she approach us. She was wearing the diners uniform, which was black dress paints and a hideous yellow shirt. Evan nodded, and the girl grabbed two menus. "Follow me."

The girl led us through the diner and all the way to the back. I wouldn't have minded it since there were less people back here, but on the way back we passed a group of people who hated me. When I passed them, they all turned to look at me with hate filled eyes. They were the kind of people who listen to Jasper and enjoyed to make my life hell.

There were four of them all crammed into the booth. Two guys and two girls. The boys were Franklin and Joshua. They we're both in the same grade as me, and I've known them since first grade. They we're inseparable since they were best friends. One of the girls was Franklins girlfriend. Her name is Anne, and she's about as fake as the three inch nails she wears that she insists are real. The last one Victoria, and she was the one that hated me most. Back then before Jasper moved here, we were best friends. We spent everyday together since we both attended the same daycare when we were little. She used to call me Hats since it sounded cooler then plain old Hattie. Well, when Jasper came she developed a crush on him, so whatever he liked, she liked. What he hated, she hated. She did that all to be close to him. Well, from what I've heard it worked out for ten minutes in the hot tub at a guy named Jason Mathews house during a party last year, if you know what I mean.

"Here we are," the girl said as she laid down the menus on the table of a booth. "Your server will be here shortly.

"Thanks," I say as I take a seat with my back to the group of teenagers, but I can feel their stares.

"They're looking at us," Evan whispers to me from across the table.

"They're looking at me," I tell him as I whisper back. "Can't you tell, they're my fan club."

Even looked at me softly since he knew that their stares were bothering me. "I'm going to say something," he says as he starts to slide out of the booth.

"No," I say suddenly as I reached out to grab his hand to stop him. His hand was warm, almost soothing in a way. He looked up at me in confusion. "They're not worth it. Let them stare, I'm used to it."

Evan smiled softly as he took his free hand and brought it to my face. His hand caressed my cheek...and it felt nice. Like it belonged there.

"What kind if gentleman would I be of I let a group of mongrels stare at my date?" He said softly before removing his hand from my face, but the feeling lingered. He lifted my hand off of his. "I'll be right back."

Evan started to walk towards them and I quickly look away. Was there about to be a fight in the middle of the diner? I knew the two boys weren't that great of fighters, but girls are ruthless. They were hair pullers. I was in a fight once, and it was bad. Well, for the other girl. I didn't have a scratch on me.

I could hear them talking softly. My curiosity got the best of me so I turned around. There wasn't any fists flying like I thought would happen. Instead, they just talked. After a minute, Evan walked back with a smile of victory on his face.

"So?" I question as he sits back down.

"I told them to keep their eyes to myself unless they wanted to see what the inside of the dumpster out back," he says with a smile on his face.

"And how did they react. I can imagine Franklin saying something along the lines of 'you and what army?'." I said as I try to mimic his voice, but it came out as a sassy southern woman.

"Actually, it was Josh who said that," he smirks as he opened up the menu. "I said I could call reinforcements that would be very upset if they know how they were making you feel."

"You have reinforcements?" I questioned.

"Well, no. But they don't know that," he says as a woman in her thirties walks up to us.

"What can I get you to drink?" She asked. It was clear that she hated her job, and I didn't blame her. In a town this small, employment was limited less you wanted to drive to the next town that was over thirty minutes away. We lived in a small town called Haven in Iowa, but it was anything but that. Well, at least it was to me. The town was surrounded by trees on all four sides and the was only one road that led out of town. It may have been pretty, but everything has it's flaws.

"I'll have water," I say to the woman with a small smile.

"Me too," Evan chimes in. The woman nodded before leaving with a very loud sigh. "So."

"So?" I questioned as I wiggled in my seat. A pain had started to flare up in my leg and it was starting to make me uncomfortable. "I hear this place had great burgers."

The woman came back and placed our drinks in front of us. "Ready to order?"

"Um, yeah. I'll have the bacon cheeseburger with fries please," Evan said politely. She nodded then then turned to me.

"I'll have the same too," I say. When she leaves I reach into my purse and pull out a bottle of pain pills that I was supposed to have taken an hour ago so the pain wouldn't come back.

"Woah, Walter White is in the building," Evan says as he noticed the bottle of pills. I chuckle as I place one in my mouth and take a gulp of water. "Is that for the pain?"

I swallow and nod. "Yeah. Every few hours I'm supposed to take one. Who knew snapping a bone in half would be painful."

"Are you hurting right now?" He asked with a worried tone.

"I'm fine," I say as I dismissed him. "Give me like five minutes and all be on cloud nine."

Evan nodded. "So did you have fun today?"

"Yeah, I think I did. I haven't done anything like this in a while. Actually I don't really go any where much these days," I confess to him.

"What do you mean? Don't you do stuff with your mom?" He asked as he sipped his water.

"Not really," I tell him. I really didn't want to get into much detail about my home life, but either way he's gonna find out some day. "Me and my mom hardly see each other these days. She drowns herself in work so she has a excuse not to see me."

"Hattie," Evan said softly as he reached over to grab my hand that I had on the table. "I had no idea. Are you alright."

"Yeah, I'm fine," I say as I pull my hand away from his. I didn't want to sound like some kind of sob story. "I'm used to it."

As soon as I finished that sentence, our waitress walked over with our food and left without a single word. Evan didn't hesitate before grabbing his burger and taking a big bite. He moaned at the taste.

"I'm going to use the bathroom real quick," I say as I grab my crutches and scoot out of the booth.

"You okay?" Evan asked with a mouthful of food. The way his face looked, I couldn't help but laugh.

"Yeah," I say with a smile before walking away. The bathroom was on the other side of the restaurant so I had to pass the group of teenagers that hated me. I pass by in ease, but I honestly thought someone would at least try to trip me.

I get to the restroom and lock myself in a stall and take a deep breath. He was the first person I had ever told about my mom not being there. It wasn't the whole truth, but it took a lot out of me.

Evan did look concerned when I told him that. He seem like he genuinely cared about me.

I get out of the stall and washed my hands. The room was quiet since I was the only one in there. I knew I had to get back because I didn't want Evan to worry. Slowly, I push open the door, but I did not like what was on the other side.

"Whoops," Victoria says as she dumps her chocolate milkshake all over the front of my shirt. It was cold, and a bit of it got into my hair.

I looked at her and down to me shirt. At this point I was fuming. The amount of anger that I was feeling made me want to reach out and pull the earrings she had in her ears out.

"You bitch," I say as I start to move towards her, but since I was on one leg she easily pushed me back.

"No, you listen to me," she says through clenched teeth as she firmly held me against the wall. "Leave now."

"Um, no," I shot back.

Victoria laughed, and it sent shivers down my spine. She was no longer the girl I used to know.

"You don't deserve to be here. You are nothing. A waste of space. And here you are, out in public. Are you trying to bring Evan down with you? Well I got news for you. Why do you think Evan and Lizzie broke up? All he wanted was sex and Lizzie wouldn't put out. Why do you think you're here? You're just something he can use and toss aside," Victoria explained roughly.

Tears started to form in my eyes. Was this true? Does Evan just want to use me? Was be just being nice so I would sleep with him?

Victoria, who seemed pleased with her work, removed her hand from my shoulder. As soon as it was gone, I rushed out of the diner in the direction of my house.

I did not look back.
