《Everybody's a Killer if You Push 'Em Far Enough • Ivy Wheeler》Chapter 3

Ivy woke up to a foot crushing her ribcage. She wrapped her hands around their ankle, painfully twisting their leg to the side and kicking it with her feet. They slammed to the floor with a loud thud.
"Ow, fuck." A familiar voice said.
Ivy opened her eyes and saw Jake rolling around on the ground. She frowned and pushed herself up.
"Was that necessary?"
He locked eyes with her and sighed. "I forgot you were there. Also forgot you took those self-defense classes.."
They both got up from the ground, Ivy threw her blanket and pillow back onto Jake's bed then walked out of his room and went across the hall to her own. She grabbed a hoodie off the end of her bed and threw it over the old gray t-shirt she had on.
Jake was out of his room first, he hurried into the wash room and locked the door. Ivy grumbled and shook the handle. "Hurry up or I'll put your head in the toilet again."
"That wasn't as bad as you think it was." He said. "Give me a minute."
* * *
The Wheeler twins hurried down the stairs, finding Luke moping at the dining room table. Ivy tried to avert Jake's attention but he was already walking over to him.
"Dad, are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah.. I was up late doing payroll." Luke muttered.
Ivy folded her arms over her chest. After what happened with her father and Jake's statue she hasn't exactly been nice to the guy. He didn't deserve kindness. Not that she really had any anyway.
"Dad, we need to talk." Jake blurted out.
"I agree." He said, dropping Jake's good guy doll onto the table. The twins stared at it.
"I like to be hugged!"
"I found this in the bathroom." Luke said. "I thought we got rid of that."
Jake grabbed it hesitantly. "Yeah.. I'm working on it."
Ivy frowned, "I thought you left it at school?" He ignored the question and hurried into the living room, leaving Ivy with Luke.
"Keep an eye on him." Her father stated.
"Don't worry." She seethed. "I got pretty good at doing your job years ago."
Before he could answer she followed Jake into the next room. He plopped down into a chair and ripped open the doll's shirt. The flap that covered the battery area clearly had been tampered with.
"Maybe we shouldn't mess with this thing." Ivy mumbled.
He ripped open the battery compartment. Ivy's eyes shot open wide when she saw that it was empty. The doll had been talking and blinking for days without batteries.
"What the fuck?" She gasped.
Jake jumped up from the chair and rushed outside. Ivy followed him, horrified.
"Jake, what are you doing? We need to burn it!"
He ran over to the trash can and threw the doll inside.
"What's that gonna do?" Ivy yelled, shoving him.
"If you want to touch the damn thing then go ahead." He said, hurrying back inside.
She hesitated for a second then groaned and ran back into the house, following Jake upstairs. They went into his room and she swung the door shut.
"That doesn't make any sense. How the hell does a doll talk and blink without batteries?" Ivy rambled, terrified.
"Maybe it's some kind of malfunction. Whatever it was, it doesn't matter anymore. He's gone." Jake explained.
"Oh yeah, because throwing a doll in a trash can always works. You sound like the first idiot to die in a horror film. We have to do something."

"Well right now we have school, so, unless you want us to get our asses kicked again, we should forget about it for now and go." Jake said, picking up his bag.
"We can't just forget about this- I can't." She stuttered.
"It's not a big deal." Jake assured her.
"That's what everyone says in a before they get brutally murdered by a crazy psycho demon doll!" Ivy explained.
"You really have to stop watching horror movies.."
* * *
Ivy walked into Perry Middle School, alone. Jake left to see Devon's performance at the talent show.
Since it's late, the hallways were completely empty. The only noise was coming from the auditorium where some loser was playing the violin.
"Yo Wheeler." Someone said from behind. As soon as a hand touched her shoulder she spun around, pulling the person's arm back, waiting for a crack or popping sound.
"Woah! Relax Ivy." Oliver shouted, staring up at her.
She groaned and let go of him, wiping her hands on her pants in disgust. "What do you want?"
"I can't talk to you?" He asked, a smug look on his face.
"No. You only talk to me when you want something." Ivy muttered, her arms uncomfortably folded over her chest.
"Fine. You're right, I need something from you."
"Oliver, leave me alone. I can't help you." She started to walk away.
The teen tried to reach for her arm and she slapped it away. "I left you a long time ago, fuck off before I shove my fist up your ass."
"Okay, I get it." He muttered, defeated. "I should get back to the talent show. Are you performing?"
She raised her fist in the air and he immediately sprinted down the hallway.
"That was.. surprisingly easy."
* * *
Ivy walked into the auditorium when someone started to play the piano. Jake was too close to the front front she just stayed at the door leant up against the wall.
Devon was pretty good for a teenager considering most teens would spend their time smoking or getting drunk.
Once his performance was over, Lexi took the stage. Ivy pushed her way over to Jake.
"We should go." She said, gesturing towards the door.
"Yeah, okay." He said, starting to get up.
"That was so beautiful, Devon." Lexi started to say. "Was it meant for anyone special?" Jake froze in his seat and Ivy sneered at the bitch onstage.
"Only for you Lexi." Devon chuckled.
Blondie laughed sarcastically. "I think you're lying." Ivy shoved into a seat next to Jake.
"I thought we were leaving?" He whispered.
"Change of plans."
"Ok, I see some familiar faces in the crowd tonight, hey mom.. hey dad.. hey brat." She said, the spotlight hitting the Mayor and the rest of her picture perfect family.
"Oh! And I think I see Devon's mom!" Lexi exclaimed.
"Mrs. Evans, you must be so proud."
They all glanced back to see Devon's mom in the crowd with the spotlight on her.
"Yes.. I am." She responded nervously.
Ivy folded her arms over her chest and rolled her eyes. This was such a waste of time.
"And is that the Wheelers?" Blondie blurted out, making both Ivy and Jake tense in their seats.
Suddenly the spotlight appeared above them, almost blinding and people started booing. Ivy stuck a middle finger up in the air.
"Hey guys, enjoying the show?" Lexi pried.

Jake looked around awkwardly as everyone stared at the twins. "Uh.. yeah." Ivy just glared at the blonde girl.
"What did you think of Devon, Jake?" She questioned, obviously to make Jake feel uncomfortable and for the famous Devon to hear.
Ivy started to fidget with her hands, anger was building up inside of her but she didn't want to blow up in front of an entire audience full of parents and teachers.
"It was good.." Jake muttered.
"Just good?" Lexi continued. "Come on Jake, don't be shy. Now's your chance to tell Dev.. and his mom what you really think."
Ivy clenched her jaw so tight she actually thought her teeth might break off, seeing Jake panic because of the bitch, made her blood boil.
"Hey Lexi." A familiar voice said. "Lexiii. Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
The crowd went silent. Everyone looked around for the person who was causing the scene but he wasn't there.
"Who is that?" Lexi frowned.
Jake slapped Ivy on the arm, she followed his gaze and saw Chucky in the seat behind them. She instantly went ice cold. "No fucking way."
"A little help here Jake?" It asked.
Ivy shook her head and tried to stop him but Jake stood up then grabbed the doll out of the seat and lifted it up.
Chucky started to whisper something in her brother's ear and Ivy stood up, yanking him away. "You can't do this."
"You can come too Ivy." The doll mumbled, a creep smile spreading across its face. Ivy didn't want to bargain with a talking doll so she agreed and followed her brother on the stage.
"What are you doing?" Lexi questioned.
"Move, bitch." Ivy said, shoving her out of the spotlight.
Jake stood in front of the microphone, holding Chucky above it. Ivy had no idea whether to scream or run.
"Hi, I'm Chucky, and I'm your friend till the end." It's head turned to her brother and Ivy bit her lip.
"You get that now Jake, right?"
Jake nodded, horrified. "Yeah.. I get it."
"You too Ivy?"
Ivy shuddered when it said her name. "Yeah."
"Now, I said friend, Jake. Nothing more. Not that there's anything wrong with that."
Ivy would punch the thing if it wasn't a talking doll. The crowd seemed to love it though, they laughed at almost every word.
"Hey! Look what I found." Chucky interjected. He held up a phone. Lexi's phone.
"My phone!" Lexi yelled, storming over to them.
"Boo!" Chucky shouted, making her jump back scared.
"Lots of pics of Junior.." He explained. "Lots of pics of Oliver too."
The crowd laughed again but Oliver and Junior turned to each other suspiciously. Ivy shook her head, this wasn't going to end well for anyone.
"Uh oh. Guess that was a secret."
"Jake! Stop it." Lexi whispered loudly.
"I'm not doing this.." He tried to explain. She just rolled her eyes and turned to Ivy.
"Then you stop him."
Ivy ignored her request and tried to focus on anything other than the demon doll in her brother's hands.
Chucky said something about Bree having a secret and Ivy's eyebrows furrowed.
"Here's Lexi's search history." He went on. "Apparently she's Botox curious."
Ivy chuckled slightly. She had to admit that it was fun fucking with Lexi for once.
"She's into Pokémon porn.. and look what she keeps googling." Chucky held up the phone for Jake to read.
"Why do my farts smell so good?" Jake remarked. Ivy snorted at that.
"Adorable!" The doll exclaimed as he listened to the laughter from the crowd.
Lexi stood there, embarrassed. She ran over to them and ripped her phone out of Chucky's hand. Ivy rolled her eyes as she stormed off the stage.
"It's contagious isn't it?" He said. "Laughing at people."
The crowd went silent.
"Well guess what, dickheads. Now the jokes on you!"
The principal came out and grabbed Jake and Ivy by the arm. "Come on, shows over." Ivy slapped her hand away.
"You're all a bunch of fucking ass holes!" Chucky yelled.
"I'm out of here!"
"Let's go, let's go." The principal muttered, dragging Ivy and Jake off of the stage as the crowd cheered.
* * *
Jake and Ivy walked into the house, both terrified from the scene Chucky caused at the school. They didn't talk the entire walk home.
Ivy immediately saw Luke's bottle or whiskey and rolled her eyes. Of course he's been drinking.
Jake hesitantly walked into the room their father was in but Ivy stayed at the door. She didn't want to deal with him right now. Not after what just happened.
"Your teacher called." He said. "You proud of yourself?"
Ivy joined her brother in case things got heated between them which was likely.
"I'm sorry if that's what you mean.." Jake muttered.
Luke looked up at them, his drunken face made Ivy look down at the floor. She hated him like this.
"You're not sorry." Luke argued. "You were suspended, both of you." He pointed a finger at Ivy and sighed.
"This isn't my fault.." Jake tried to defend himself. Even though it sounded insane, this was no one's fault. Just a talking demon doll.
Luke roughly placed his glass of whiskey down onto the coffee table and stood up. "You insulted your friends and your family in front of the entire school."
"They deserved it." Jake said sharply. "And they're not my friends!"
"They used to be, both of you!" Luke yelled, turning his attention to Ivy.
"You both used to have friends, what happened to ya? It doesn't bother you that everybody thinks you're fucking weird, huh?"
"Shut up.." Ivy warned.
"You don't care that they think I'm weird!" Jake snapped.
"You just care that they know I'm a f*g!"
As soon as he finished the sentence, hell broke loose. It only took a second for Luke to snap. Ivy watched his fist collide with Jake's face. He grabbed his son by the collar of his shirt and slammed him up against the door.
Ivy stood there horrified. She ran forward, grabbing her fathers arms. The young teen struggled to pry him away from her brother.
"Dad! Let go of him!" She begged, tugging at his shirt.
Luke swung his elbow back, hitting her in the cheek. Ivy fell back from the blow and held her face, pain radiating through her cheek.
Jake glanced down at her, terror in his eyes.
"Listen to me, listen to me!" Luke shouted, getting Jake's attention fast. "You say that again and I will kill you.. You hear me?"
When Jake didn't answer Luke slammed him against the wall again. "You hear me?!"
Ivy stared up at her brother, tears in her eyes. She never cried, only when things got really fucking bad. Luke had gotten so much worse in the last week. She wished that he would just get out of their lives.
Her cheek stung and her body felt weak from the awful feeling in her stomach.
Jake spluttered, trying to get words out. He stared at his father with so much hate it reminded Ivy of herself.
"It should've been you inside of that car instead of mom."
Ivy felt her heart drop into her stomach. He was right, if it had been Luke who died in the accident instead of mom then everything would be so much better. They wouldn't have to deal with a drunk father everyday.
Luke hesitated for a second, letting Jake's words sink in. Finally, he started to loosen his grip on his son and Jake shoved him back.
"Get off of me!" Jake shouted, his voice cracking.
Ivy looked up at her father, tears blurring her vision. Jake walked over and helped her to her feet before picking up his ginger haired doll.
"Go to your rooms." Luke muttered, picking his glass up from the coffee table and chugging the whiskey down.
Jake hesitated for a second and Luke ripped Chucky out of his hands. "Give me that.."
Ivy reached for it, "I don't think you want to-"
"Go to your room!" Their father screamed, shoving them forward. "Go! I don't want to see you anymore!"
Jake grabbed her hand and rushed up the stairs.
"Get up there!"
They hurried down the hall and Jake grabbed the wall to catch his breath.
"I hate you!" He yelled. "I fucking hate you!"
Ivy grabbed his arm and they ran into his bedroom. Jake slammed the door shut, tears pouring down his face. Ivy stumbled over to his bed. "I'm sorry.."
He turned around, overwhelmed. "Why are you sorry?"
"I couldn't push him away.." She muttered, staring up at him defeated.
He shook his head, trudging over to her. "Don't say that, okay? You aren't going to win every time."
She looked down at the floor. "Why is he getting so bad? What the hell happened?"
Jake shook his head, still pacing around disoriented. Ivy patted the bed next to her, inviting him to sit down.
He accepted her request and plopped down next to Ivy, breathing out an unsteady sigh.
"Are you okay?" She questioned, wiping the blood from his nose onto her sleeve. He pushed her hand away gently.
"I don't know." he muttered, leaning forward.
Ivy watched her brother slide his hands over his face in an effort to calm himself down.
She wrapped her arm around his shoulders and leaned her head against his shoulder. "I'm gonna kick his ass."
He chuckled slightly. Ivy felt a smile spread across her face. She always enjoyed her brother's dorky laugh, for some reason, it gave her hope that they weren't fucked up forever.
"Are you okay?" Jake repeated, causing her to look up.
"Yeah, fine." Ivy said, leaning deeper into her brother's embrace. He wrapped his arms around her and sighed.
Suddenly, the lights started to flicker. Ivy pushed out of her brother's arms and frowned. Not even a second later the power went out completely.
Ivy pulled out her phone and turned on the flashlight.
"What's going on?" She questioned, turning to Jake. He got up from the bed and shrugged.
They walked over to the door and hurried downstairs. Ivy furrowed her eyebrows when she didn't see Luke sitting in the living room.
His bottle of whiskey was on the table, empty. The two of them searched the house, Jake went into the basement and Ivy stayed on the main level.
"IVY!" Jake screamed from under her. Without hesitation, Ivy sprinted into the basement. She froze when her eyes landed on Luke..
She stared in horror, watching her fathers body absorb electricity. His eyes were wide but she could tell that his heart had already stopped beating.
Bolts of light zapped his body, causing him to seize. One of the bolts landed on his eye, turning it into a dark ashy mess of blood and tissue.
Jake was on the phone with someone. Ivy couldn't take her eyes away from the scene in front of her. She stared at her father with tears in her eyes, sure, he was a pain in the ass but he wasn't always bad.
Now they were orphans.. no one to call "mom" or "dad."
"Ivy.." Jake choked out.
"We have to go."

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
