《Not Anyone | Vernon Chwe》Chapter 14

Wandering around a park and pointing out every fascinating stuffs we could see has always been a thing I've been wanting to do for a date. And imagining it in the past, I had my ex-boyfriend in mind.
However, now, it happened unplanned and to perfectly sum this dream up, I was with Vernon. The more I come to think about it, the more I still can't believe myself that I got to meet one handsome guy and eventually, we spent our trip here almost everyday together.
And over the days we took with just the two of us, every moment I have the chance to stare at his face, gradually knowing what kind of a person he is, catching feelings has never been this easy.
"Come! I'll show you something.", He extended his hand towards me and as I smiled at him, I held it. He started to lead me somewhere but slowly so we were still walking side by side.
It has been awhile since we were just strolling around the park which he has already been to. Actually, today has been consisting of him bringing me to places that he has been to saying that he likes all those sights so much.
I've never seen him so thrilled ever since the day I met him. The excitement and happy look on his face makes want to mirror it on my face too. I guess showing people things he has seen was one of the things of his likings.
Because it was my first time at the country, I didn't have anything to show him so might as well take all his lead and because it seems like he knew almost all the beautiful spots, I might have already gotten myself a tour guide which in the first place I can't afford.
"Let's play a game.", I suggested as I placed the Pincho de tortilla that I was halfway into eating beside me on the park bench that Vernon and I were sitting on.
The sun was already starting to set and we were just watching it there still at the park with talks every in between.
"Uhm.. sure.", He agreed as he also placed the same food as mine that he was eating. "What game though?"
I grinned as I brought up my hand and put up all my fingers for him to see. "Folding finger game!"
He looked a bit hesitant about it but still held up his fingers to play anyway. "Okay..", he said in a slightly questioning tone. "But will there be a punishment?"

"Oh, right. A punishment.", I pursed my lips as I looked around, thinking for a perfect punishment. "Can you think of anything?"
He shook his head with his lower lip thrusting out. "Not yet as of now."
"A punishment..", when my eyes that were wandering landed on the sun that was setting, an idea popped up inside my mind. "What about the loser will have to pay for dinner?", I suggested.
"Sure, that sounds great. I thought you were going for the embarrassing ones."
I plastered a sly grin on my face. "Well, if you want—"
"No. I'd rather agree on paying for dinner.", With the disagreement that he used to cut off my words, I laughed at him and the way his face got so worried.
"Then shall we start? I'll go first.", I started and thought for a moment on what should I say. "Uhm.. fold a finger if you've been here in Spain more than once.", My smile became even more wider with the idea I've came up with and his expression.
"Hey, that's cheating.", He complained but still quietly folded one finger.
"What? No. This is a type of game where you can't cheat. Think of your advantage too.", I chuckled. "It's your turn now. Go."
"Alright..fold a finger if.. you've been drunk in this country before.", Now, it was him who had a mischievous smirk.
"Hey..", I tried to complain but I couldn't continue since embarrassment dominated me first.
"What? I wasn't cheating. One person said that this is a type of game where you can't cheat.", He snickered with the way he just mocked me. "But..", he folded another finger for the second time. "I'm guilty of being drunk here too so.."
We both laughed with the confession he made. And I ended up folding one of my finger since he himself saw how I got drunk that night.
"..fold your finger if.."
"..fold your finger if.."
"..fold your finger if..."
After a whole lot of ideas on how we will fold each other's finger for one of us to win, it has come down to him holding up only one finger while I had two.
It was my turn, and I was already out of ideas since I've already used up all the knowledge I have of him. "Uhm..", I started, squinting my eyes while I stared at his face, looking for an idea. Out of a sudden, that lady that Vernon knew who was selling foods that we met earlier came into my mind and all the conversations we had before. "Fold a finger if.. you've considered someone you will want to marry.", I trailed off my words and folded a finger because honestly, I've considered marrying my ex-boyfriend, but now, in all honesty, it was all left in the past.

With the last finger he had which was his pinky finger, he folded it without a shift of expression. I won. He already folded all his fingers but I couldn't seem to be excited over it. I wasn't exactly sure what I was feeling, but perhaps, I was curious.. or I really wanted to know who he had in mind.
"You win.", He said, and it literally was a way to wake me up from the thoughts that unknowingly came to me.
I forged a smile and brought my hand down when I later realized that I was still holding them up.
"You okay?", He asked when he probably caught whatever was going on my facial expression.
I instantly nodded at him. "Of course, why would I be..", I dragged my words as I grabbed back the Pincho de tortilla that was on the bench, and I couldn't even continue what I was saying. I diverted my eyes infront instead and just stared at it while mindlessly munching on my food.
At some point, when almost every light in the city were turned on as it was already night and dark, Vernon and I went to dinner.
He suggested that we should go to the nearest restaurant from the park and so we did, but it turned out, the nearest eating place was a steak serving restaurant and the expensive looking diner just makes me even more believe that they'll just empty our wallets.
Well, Vernon was the one paying so, it's only his wallet that will be empty if we end up dining there.
I told him that we should go to the second nearest restaurant or any other restaurant that won't take even our last dime and will not leave us starving the next few days. And it will burden me to think that he was waisting money on me. I was fine with anything, and he has a trip to enjoy for himself as well.
"It's okay, really.", He reassured me then again about going to the steak restaurant and that he doesn't mind it at all. "Think about this as a treat for being my friend, my trip buddy and for being my company.", He raised his brows at me, his face askance for my agreement.
"I should be the one treating you for that, you basically gave me a tour everywhere."
"Then treat me some other time. But tonight, I'm the who's gonna be treating you."
As I look at his pouty pleading face, I ended up agreeing to him. I can manage to eat with my conscience thinking that I'll be treating him the next time we eat out.
Even leading me inside, he held my hand, and as we arrived at our table, he pulled a chair for me, he translated the words that I couldn't understand on the menu, and I swear to my dear life, I would feel the luckiest person if he was my boyfriend.
"Tomorrow..", he started, and from looking at the steak that I was cutting, I glanced up to meet his eyes. "..I'm going to a beach.. overnight.. would you mind if I ask you to come with me?", He seemed and appeared nervous and I can't just believe that he was when he was just talking to me.
Eversince I've met him, my empty schedule of a trip became fun and exciting. And for him to ask me to go with him in a two day trip to the beach, I've never felt this welcome out of all the people I met in such small time.
"If you won't mind me going with you.."
He shook his head. "Would I ask you to come with me if I didn't want to?"
I smiled at him. "Then, it is a yes."
He snickered as he jabbed a piece of sliced meat with his fork, his smile remained undying even as he brought the piece of steak in his mouth, and he did all those in a gradual way while his eyes never left mine.
I couldn't help but to clear my throat, and honestly, I could feel my cheeks heating up. How I wish that I wasn't this easily shaken with his slight gestures.

Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source.
