《Christmas Wish (Completed)》Chapter 3

Being out of the patients room, a hand wraps around my arm and jerks me off to the side harshly. I barely hold onto the laptop and clipboard, as Dr. Barry drags me into two rooms down. He is ticked about something but then again I heard he is a class A jerk in the hospital.
He shoves me away from him and I topple for a second before gaining my balance back.
"What do you think you're doing with my patient? To tell them what you did gives you no right." Dr. Barry starts in.
"I went over his vitals and case. There is things we can do to help him." I get cut off.
"That is my call and my patient, Dr. Calista." He spits out hatefully.
"You just gave false hope to a father when his child will die. There is nothing you can do other than torture that poor boy and his father. You think just because you see a guy grieving over his child, you think you can slip your way into his pants?"
My mouth falls open at the insult. I'll admit his looks draws me in but that is not why I based anything I said off of in the least. My mind is on the innocent child that deserves the fighting chance.
"That is enough, Barry." Dr. Marshall steps into the room, having noticed I was not in the group probably.
"She." Dr. Barry points to me, but Dr. Marshall cuts him off.
"Dr. Calista is doing nothing but making sure the patient gets every chance he deserves. It is wrong for you to even suggest differently just because she is a female. Dr. Calista has worked just has hard to get here as every other doctor. I will not have you downgrading my interns. This will be reported to the Head Specialist." Dr. Marshall grunts out.

"Dr. Calista walk me through your thought process." Dr. Marshall side steps Dr. Barry.
"Depends on how the bloodwork results show. I would like to look into chemotherapy to start. His vitals are strong enough to start. Then if we can get back some better readings there should be surgery or even some type of transplant to help fight the cancer as well. Being a young child it will be a difficult journey for him to go through but his odds are better with his age and overall health being good before the cancer."
"What if he already has kidney damage from the cancer, as that is a major complication to myeloma?" Dr. Marshall questions.
"Then we would see how bad the damage may be and help there first before moving onto chemotherapy. You work up his body to be able to receive the treatment. A childs body will be faster to heal and come back from things than a adults is capable of doing."
All of this has brought in the other interns. They just stand by watching and listening to all of this going on. Massie smirks at the three of us, seeming to be happy Dr. Jerkface is getting it handed to him by Dr. Marshall and me, a intern.
Dr. Marshall pulls out his cell phone and makes a call right in front of us. Dr. Barry is fuming not moving from his spot, as the phone is handed to him. After a few minutes of Dr. Marshall telling all of this to someone and Dr. Barry being quiet he flips the phone closed and turns to me.
"I am off this case and floor. I will just go back to the Oncology floor. Good luck with your pateint." He spits and walks out ratherly quickly.

Dr. Marshall chuckles before regaining his tough look. "Congratulations Dr. Calista. You have your very first case to be on. I will be here to mentor and watch you through it all as well as Dr. Moore, by orders of Head Specialist this is all yours to work."
Internal battle happens in me right as he finishes. I am in charge of Nicolas Winters case solo! Me. Thank God, I will still have my mentor and a new oncologist to step in when I need it, but still it is rare for an intern to get this oppurtunity just like it's a rare cancer Nicolas has for a child.
"Right now unless I let you know otherwise, you work this patient case only. No more rounds other than right here." Dr. Marshall smiles.
He leads the other interns out of the room and I catch my breath.
My feet leads me to the nurses station. Jewels smiles. "So you get to take over a patient on your own."
I nod. "I need these labs drawn and results back as soon as possible, Jewels." I hand her the sheet and get to putting it in his chart for order. She walks off to his room.
With the labs ordered, I walk to the office area for doctors on this floor and find a seat. The first thing I want to do is read his entire chart thoroughly and not just a fast pace once over.
What is concerning me the most is the fact that Nicolas has got the diagnosis of myeloma which the blood will show as well when it gets back. It can be easy to miss with the barely there symptoms of back pain or pain in the bones, anemia, fatigue, and possibly loss of appetite. It is great his primary physician was very extensive on his lab work when they didn't find anything wrong with his back.
Poor child may have scared his father half to death by time everything else started. Based off his symptoms today alone I would say he has had it for a bit, because there is no medications in his chart saying he is on a sedative or even pain medicine.
"Hey Holly, the results are in." Jewels hands the papers to me. "I will get them into the chart but I knew you would want them now instead of waiting on that."
"Thanks, Jewels." I smile and read over the numbers.
It is clear the myeloma diagnosis. His kidneys still look great, so he isn't to far in yet thankfully. It begs to question why Dr. Barry labeled him as terminal when there is a good chance he can survive and beat this.
I look over the chemotherapy options they have for children and one matches just want Nicolas needs to go through.
If Mr. Winters consents to this we can start by tomorrow, because the rest of today he needs to be given some nutrients through his IV line to help with the anemia levels that are there but not off the charts yet.
I stand and grab my laptop, making my way back to Nicolas's room and knock on the door.
At the beginning of the chapter there is some harsh things that can happen in any job.
Please know the resources out there to help report anyone who may do this to either gender, because it is not okay for anyone in the workforce to deal with things like this!
