《Steam of Britain》Chapter 26: Brake Vans

Crovan puffed down the line. He saw many engines along the line. The engines he saw to greet him were kind to him.

"Oh, Thomas, you're back!" said the green sattle tank. Just then, a peep-peep was heard, and a blue tank engine that looked like Crovan came in.

"Thomas, is that you?" asked Crovan. "Crovan!!" said Thomas, "what are you doing here?" "I'm here to help!" "Do you know each other?" asked the Tram Engine. "Oh, this is my brother, Crovan," said Thomas. Daisy then said, "Oh yes, I can see the family resemblance." "I heard about your journey," said Thomas, "And now you're a royal engine?" "Yes," said Crovan, "but British Railways was planning on scrapping me, but I had much support from all sorts engines from the Steam of Britain Fleet, which I am now part of." Percy then asked, "What's British Railways?" "I believe it is what most engines here call 'the other railway'. I'm glad you all have break vans. Many goods trains on the mainland don't have them anymore. But we still use them. I just feel it's not proper to have a goods train without a break van!" The engines agreed, but Percy was spectacle.

Soon, Thomas had shown Crovan the branch line. He helped with goods, and shunting trucks. All the while, Percy was thinking to what Crovan had told them all. He couldn't believe that there were trains with no brake vans! If they can do it on the other railway, thought Percy, Then so can I! Next time Percy was to take a goods train, he shunted them very well. And then, he left the brake van before the guard could couple it up.

Percy puffed down the mainline. While there, he saw Arther the Ivat Class. He was surprised that Percy had no brake van at the end. He was puffing down, and he soon stopped at a station, where Flying Scotsman was waiting for him. "I suppose he was told about that," said Scotsman, "from what Gordon told me, he's very impressionable." "Oh dear," said Arthur.

Percy was climbing up a hill, when suddenly, the last three trucks broke free from the train! "ON ON ON!!" They cried. They raced down the line back to the Junction. There, they hit the brake van, and the guard, taken by surprise, put on the brakes hard. Crovan saw what had happened, and pulled up next to Percy as he got his trucks back. "I should've told you," said Crovan, "The engines have special air brakes. The pressure from the brakes on the engine help push the air through tubes, which put the brakes on. You don't have that, so a brake van is essential for a loose coupling train."

After that, Percy never again left the brake van behind. He always listens to Crovan about the other railway, and they can both agree, that no goods train, whether they have air brakes or not, should have a brake van at the end.
