《Steam of Britain》Chapter 27: Arron's Passengers

James wasn't feeling well. His pipes had become clogged up, so he had to go to the works. The Fat Controller now had to find another engine to take his passenger trains. The only engine available was Arron the Q1. He was currently shunting his trucks into place, when he was approached by the Fat Controller. "Leave those trucks here," said Sir Topham Hatt, "I have another job for you Arron. I want you to pull passengers while James is at the works." "Yes sir," said Arron. He was nervous. He'd never pulled passengers before.
At the station, he soon arrived, and waited for his coaches. He saw Mallard on the opposite platform. "Hello Arron," said Mallard, "What are you doing here?" "I'm here to pull James' passenger trains," replied the goods engine. Mallard was surprised. "Have you ever done it before?" he asked. "No," said Arron. "Well, here's some advice," said Mallard, "Don't go too fast. Passengers don't like to be bumped around. Be careful when approaching a station. Don't brake too hard. And pay attention to signals." Arron soon let it sink in. Just then, Mallard headed off with the Wild North Western. "Well, I got to be off. Have a good day Arron." Max put the coaches behind Arron, and the passengers boarded the train.
Arron then took off with a jolt. The luggage flew from the shelves, and people fell from their seats. "Easy buddy!" called the driver, "You shouldn't pull so hard when leaving a station." "Sorry," said Arron.
Arron puffed through the countryside, and he tried to be gentle. But he wasn't gentle enough. The passengers were bumped and tossed around like peas in a pod! The passengers then complained to Arron, and he felt horrible. Just then, City of Truro came up, and yelled at the passengers, "WITH THAT ATTITUDE, YOU DON'T DESERVE OUR SERVICES!! ARRON HAS NEVER PULLED PASSENGERS BEFORE!! HE'S LEARNING!!!" The passengers now felt sorry for saying such words to Arron. Arron was looking down at his buffers. City of Truro then said, "How about we double head this train? I can teach you without having to stand aside." Arron felt much better.

Soon, City of Truro and Arron were heading down the line at a smooth pace. The engines talked endlessly of steam, and their former rivalry. They stopped at each station easily. Soon, Arron had learned to pull passengers well. He was gentle when pulling out of the station, and was smooth on the mainline. Soon, James came back. "I heard of how well you pulled passenger," he said. "Indeed," said Arron, "And while it was fun, I will be very happy to go back to trucks."
After that, Arron was back on goods work. He was happy to be back. He now know that if passengers need an engine, he knows how to take them on the mainline.
