《Steam of Britain》Chapter 6: The Second Tender

Flying Scotsman is an A1 Pacific from the LNER, and the most famous steam engine in the world. He pulls the Flying Scotsman Express from King's Cross to Edinburgh. He was the first vehicle on land to go 100 mph recorded, and pulled the first ever non-stop train. He often draws crowds near the tracks and at stations that he thunder's through. He loves the attention, and lifts his spirits up when he comes by.

One day, Flying Scotsman had a surprise waiting for him at Edinburgh. When he saw it, he was a bit confused. "A tender?" he asked, "But I already have one." "But this is a water tender," said the stationmaster, "It holds extra water so you don't have to keep stopping to refill as often." Flying Scotsman buffered up to it, and was coupled up. He soon had his second tender filled with water. He then headed back down the mainline to King's Cross.

When he arrived, Duchess and Alison were amazed at the sight. "Incredible!" said Duchess, "I never thought that an engine could ever have two tenders!" "It's for extra water," said Flying Scotsman.

Soon, Flying Scotsman had shown everyone his second tender. They were all impressed, except for Mallard. "Why does he get a second tender?" he complained to Steve, "I should get one as well! I pull a non-stop express as well, and only refill on coal and water at each end!" "Well," said Steve, "I believe that you use the least coal and water consumption when you run." "PAH!" said Mallard, "They just want to increase Scotman's ego with that tender!"

All through the week, Mallard thought of a way to get the second tender, but never got a chance. Then one day, he saw it sitting in a siding, and had a brilliant idea. He puffed up to it, and coupled up. He then took off to the platform, where his coaches were waiting. The guard blew his whistle, and Mallard steamed off.

Mallard was happy to have a second tender, until he saw a very cross looking Shed Master. "Mallard," he said, "Why did you take Flying Scotsman's second water tender?" Mallard looked at his buffers. "That tender was made so Flying Scotsman could extend his train further than usual. You must learn that you can't always have what you want!" "Yes sir," said Mallard quietly.

After that, Mallard was put on goods work with Arron and Steve. Barrow took over the Elizabethan express. "Hey!" said Max, "Mallard has a second tender like Flying Scotsman!! Oh wait, it's just a goods van, never mind!!" Everyone laughed, and Mallard said nothing, and never said anything again about not having a second tender.
