《Steam of Britain》Chapter 5: Atlantic vs Pacific

Mallard was happily running down the line back to King's Cross. He loved the countryside, and racing through stations. All the way down the main line, he loved seeing people waving at him, and saying, "IT'S MALLARD, THE FASTEST STEAM ENGINE IN THE WORLD!!!!" Even though he was the only A4 service, he still thought fondly of the olden days when his class was top express locomotives.

But just before he hit Peterborough, a signal diverted him into a sighting. "Not a single time in service was I ever late, and I'm not gonna start now!!!" he complained. "Steady old boy," said his driver, "There's an excursion train coming, and it's going to join the King's Cross fleet." Just then, a whistle was heard, and Mallard watched as an LNER/GER C1 Atlantic came rushing past!

"FIZZLING FIREBOXES!!!" said Mallard, "AN ATLANTIC!?! I thought they had all been scrapped." "All but one it seems," said his fireman. (replay video at 0:21) Soon, the signal changed to green, and Mallard took off once more.

Later at King's Cross, Harold had just brought in a heavy load of coal with Trooper, when they heard a new whistle. They then saw the Atlantic come steaming into the station. Trooper was amazed. "A GER C1 Atlantic!?! Amazing!!" he said. "Hello everyone," said the Atlantic, "I'm Silvia." "Nice to meet you Silvia," said Harold, "My name's Harold, and this is Trooper." "Nice to meet you two. It was a bit exhausting coming all the way here stopping only for fuel. So, how are things....." A screeching noise was heard, and everyone covered their ears as Bertram came to a screeching halt. "SILVIA!?!" "Bertram, is that you?" "You know each other?" asked Trooper. "Yes," said Silvia, "We really stuck together in the old days, when the LNER had just formed." "Wow," said Harold, "I can't wait to hear the story."

In the yards, the engines all got together to hear Silvia tell her story. "So, Bertram was often teased about how old he was, and so I decided to stick up for him. I was a bit harsh sometimes, but I managed to get them under control." "Yes," said Bertram, "It was beautiful. But honestly, I thought you were scrap." "I did too," said Silvia, "until the carriage shed master helped keep me safe and hidden. When I was discovered by British Railways, they thought I deserved a second chance considering how long I managed to hide. I was repaired to full glory, and headed off with an excursion train to King's Cross." "I'm so happy you're here now Silvia!" "I am too." Max smiled, "Do I feel something more than friendship?" "Max, we're married," said Bertram.

"WHAT!?!" exclaimed the engines. "You never told them?" asked Silvia. "I didn't want to think of how I lost you hurt my heart," said Bertram. "How is it possible? I didn't know engines could get married," said City of Truro. "It's more of the fact that there's nothing that says we can't. We once said it as a joke, and a priest nearby waiting for a train said he would gladly make it official, so, here we are now." Just then, two whistles were heard, and Mallard and Flying Scotsman came forward. "Hello everyone!" said Mallard, "It's good to be home!" "Oh great," said Silvia, "Pacifics." Mallard and Flying Scotsman were confused. "Is something wrong?" "Yes," said Silvia, "You Pacifics are nothing but rude, boastful, and very full of yourselves. Now excuse me, I need to see if there is work for me to do."

The engines were shocked. Just a minute, Silvia was very kind and spoke wonderfully to the engines, but was rude and judgmental Mallard and Flying Scotsman. "What's her problem?" asked Flying Scotsman. "Oh it's probably the after math of WWI." "Oh," said Flying Scotsman. Mallard was confused. "What is it?" he asked. "It's the round the same time that the A1 Pacifics started to show up, and replace the C1 Pacifics like her." Mallard's frown then turned into a sad smile, "Oh, I see. I never really saw one, I just heard of them and seen pictures of them in some books the workmen brought." "I'll go talk with her," said Bertram, "I've known her the longest." "What does he mean?" asked Mallard. "Apparently they're married," said Max.

"WHAT?!?" exclaimed the two Pacifics.

Silvia was sitting in the roundhouse, and frowning to herself, when she heard Bertram puffing in. "Hello Bertram," she said. "Hello Silvia," said Bertram, "I just want you to know, Flying Scotsman and Mallard are nothing like the other Pacifics you knew." "Really? And what if they say that you're old and outdate?!" "They would never say that," said Bertram, "because they are outdated too." Silvia looked at Bertram, and said, "Really?" "Yes, you ever heard of diesel engines?" "Those engines that run on oil instead of coal and water? Yes, why?" "Well, the time you were in that shed, the Big Four merged into British Railways, and then they decided to make diesels the main form of transport on the rails." Silvia was shocked. That explains why she only saw a single steam engine on the rails today. "But, British Railways decided to keep some steam engines in service, like us, to show us newer generations what made the railways they are today." Silvia smiled, "I'm just happy to see you again." she said. She then frowned, "I suppose I owe the Pacifics an apology. I just judged them based on others I met." "Yes," said Bertram, "I never expected you to judged someone based on others with different personalities." Silvia looked down at her buffers.

The next morning, Silvia was due with a local train, and saw Flying Scotsman puffing up from the opposite platform, and Mallard right next to her. "I'm sorry for saying that stuff last night," said Silvia, "It was just hard to adjust to being replaced when the first Pacific came out. I believe his name was, Gordon, and said that I was just a small engine who would soon be used less and less. And the sad thing was, he was right. I was soon shunted and forgotten in a carriage shed." Flying Scotsman then laughed, "That defiantly sounds like Gordon! Anyway, I'm sorry for laughing, but mostly for his behavior. He just likes to think that he's the most important engine in the world because he pulls express trains. But every job is just as important as running the rails." "For example," said Mallard, as Perry shunted his coaches to behind him, "The tank engines and diesel shunters help get our coaches and trucks so we tender engines don't crash because we can't see behind us most of the time." "And then the bigger engines," said Flying Scotsman, "Weather they are passenger or freight, or mixed traffic, we are all really useful engines." Just then, Mack came in with a passenger train, and laughed, "YOU?!? REALLY USEFUL!?! YOU'RE ALL JUST ATTRACTIONS TO THE RAILWAY!! AND MY CLASSES ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD!! SO YOU ARE ALL-" Just then Silvia blew her whistle, and yelled, "LISTEN HERE YOU FAT 🤬🤬🤬!!! YOU NEED TO MIND YOUR OWN 🤬BUSINESS AND KNOW THAT WITHOUT US, YOU WOULDN'T EVEN BE HERE!!!!" Mack looked at her with wide eyes, and Silvia continued, "SO JUST SHUT YOUR TRAP, OR ELSE, I'LL SEE YOU AT THE CUTTER'S TOURCH!!!!" Mack then looked down at his buffers. The station was in quiet, until Mallard said, "Wow, I haven't seen that much anger since City of Truro got serious with a class 37 diesel and shunted him into a bog." "Well, maybe I should join Truro in doing that if there are more bullies like him." Flying Scotsman looked at Mack, who was still looking at the rails. Soon, Silvia headed off with her train, and she smiled, knowing that even though she was not as young as she used to be, she would still be really useful at King's Cross, with the Steam of Britain.
