《parties // billie eilish》Chapter 74: The interrogation

After the old lady at the disk gives us instructions where to go, we enter a narrow hallway where we are supposed to wait for some cops to talk to us. Kevin, Julia and Billie sit down on one of two benches close to the walls, but I sit down on the floor a few feet away from them. I can't stand acting like I wasn't the reason for involving the police. I could have stopped julia, but I'm a fucking coward so that wasn't the case. Billie looks at me before raising her eyebrows in confusion.
''Everything okay?'' She asks, leaning forward so she can look me in the eyes.
''Yeah, I'm fine,'' I mumble before looking down at the floor while resting my hands on my knees.
Billie opens her mouth, but before she gets to say anything, an officer with brown, short hair and beard enters the hallway, pointing at me. His eyes are shifting between green and brown so it's impossible to tell what eye color he has. He looks pretty old, but young at the same time.
''We would like to talk to you first,'' he says with a dark, husky voice. I sigh before standing up and following the officer throught the halls. Eventually, we arrive at a door with the number ''31'' on it and I enter with the man behind me.
''Sit down, please,'' he says, pointing at a plastic table with four plastic chairs around it. That's basically the only furniture in the empty, white room and it kinda scares me. I sit down in the chair closest to the door, feeling like that gives me some kind of freedom.
''I know that this room isn't so nice, but we are here to talk, not to have a sleepover,'' he says, trying to lighten up the mood.

''That's okay,'' I simply say, not feeling like joking right now. He gives me a small smile before sitting down on the opposite side of me, the chair squeeking slightly.
''My name is Ethan and I'm going to ask you a few questions. I want you to be honest with me all the time, okay?'' He asks and I nod.
''So, let's start. I have a picture of your friend here,'' he says, placing a paper on the table with Travis face on it. I can tell immediately that it's his school photo by the gray background. The picture looks good, with Travis smiling slightly but still looking a bit serious. ''Tell me about your relation.''
''He is my best friend, even though we haven't known each other for a very long time I feel like he is my best friend of all time,'' I explain, already feeling a bit emotional.
''Have you guys been fighting at all recently?'' He asks, tilting his head slightly while looking my right in the eyes, probably trying to see if I'm lying or not by my body language and it makes me nervous.
''No, sir. I don't think that we've had a fight at all,'' I say, truthfully.
''Okay. So, do you mind if I ask you some questions about your other friends that are here today?'' He asks, putting one of his hands on his wrist that's covered by a black sleeved shirt. I'm sure that he's dressing so simple because he doesn't want to scare me with a fucking ''FBI'' jacket or something.
''No, go ahead,'' I shrug.
''Good. So, who reported him missing?'' He asks, making me gulp.
''Julia,'' I admit.
''Okay. For how long did you guys know that the boy was missing before you called the police?'' He asks and I suddenly feel a lot more uncomfortable as I know that I let people down by answering these questions truthfully.

''I'm not sure, sir. A couple of days, I think.''
''Why didn't you report him missing as soon as you realised that he was gone?'' He asks.
''Because of his letter,'' I say, quietly.
''What did it say?'' He asks and I start to get annoyed by his questions.
''That it would hurt him if we reported him missing,'' I say immediately.
''Okay,'' he says, writing down something on a piece of paper with a pen from his pocket.
''So, what made you call us?''
''I- I'm not sure, sir,'' I stutter, feeling really uncomfortable as I know that the truth about us lying to Billie and Kevin will come out soon.
''Ember, I would appreaciate it if you could at least try to remember,'' he says softly, tilting his head again to look at me with a small smile. I know what this bitch is doing. He just wants me to be comfortable so I'll tell him the truth and I can tell that he thinks that I'm stupid enough to buy it.
''Well, Julia convinced me that it would be the best if we just reported him missing so you guys could find him,'' I admit.
''And what did you think about that?'' He asks.
''I thought that it was a good idea, but she wanted to hide it from Billie and Kevin because they didn't want to call the police,'' I explain.
''They didn't want to call the police?'' He asks, raising his eyebrows. ''So they don't know that you guys called?''
''Nope,'' I say, looking at him as he quickly write down something on the piece of paper.
''So, where were you when you realised that he was missing?'' He asks.
''I was at my uncle's house in Chicago with Billie,'' I explain.
''Okay, and do you know where the others were?''
''I'm not really sure. Kevin called me and said that he was gone and told me not to call the police because it would hurt him,'' I say, making him furrow his eyebrows.
''Are you sure that the letter that you talked about was written by Travis and not another person?'' He asks, making me furrows my eyebrows.
''Yeah, or I think so. It sounded like him,'' I say immediately.
''So there's not a possibility that the letter could be written by another person who could have hurt Travis Mason and then tried to cover it up?'' He asks, making me shuffle uncomfortably becuase the thought really makes me scared.
''I- I'm not sure. I haven't thought about that as a possibility, sir,'' I say, starting to realise that it makes sense.
''Okay. How was Kevin's and Travis relation?'' He asks.
''Are you suspecting Kevin as the reason to why Travis is gone?'' I ask him, making him turn quiet. Fuck.
