"Beatrice?"
I gasp and turn around. All bad thoughts leave my head. Blue eyes. Those blue eyes! The ones I've been looking for. My mouth drops.
"Tobias?" I say, in shock. I run to him and fling myself into his arms. "Oh Toby! I haven't seen you in so long. I missed you so much!"
He wraps his strong arms around me, and I bury my head into his chest. "You too Beatrice." I breath in his scent. I missed him so much. "And my name is Four by the way."
I look up to him in confusion for a moment. A nick name I guess. I half smile and say, "My name's Tris now, anyways." He smiles and laughs. I take a step back from him.
"Gosh Tris, I haven't seen you in so long!" He frowns a bit, and I wonder why. I nod my head in agreement. "No you don't understand, anytime someone new came to town, I'd try to find you." I see he immediately regrets saying this, because his ears turn to a pink and he scratches his neck. Old habits stay with you.
I gasp again, remembering what Uriah said this morning. "So, Four," I start, testing out the nick name, "this kid named Uriah-I think- said we have all our classes together!"
I see his eyes light up for a moment, and he immediately covers it with a mask. I wonder why? "That's cool." I frown.
"Good seeing you, Four." I say turning away, and starting to walk. I let out a breath I didn't k ow I was holding.
"Tris Wait!" I smile and hide it as I turn around. I raise an eyebrow.
"Yes?" I say, still hiding that damn smile. He blinks for a few seconds, as if he's thinking what to say.
"You can call me Tobias. Only when it's us. It's nice to hear my name again." I smile. A real, genuine smile. Then I nod.
I turn and walk away, that smile still on my face. And I see that this is the happiest I have been in years.
And realization hits me.
I still like Tobias Eaton.
But I doubt he likes me back.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.

Lament of The Demiurge
The Great Law of Blood is simple: when you kill someone, you take their EXP. When you get enough EXP, you level up. When you level up, you become better at killing people. The cycle has continued since before the time of the gods and has been going on thousands of years after they died. It's a good thing, of course. It rewards punishing the evil creatures of the world: goblins, kobolds and other sorts of terrible monsters. It will surely go on for eternity. People thought the gods would live for eternity too, but they were slain. This world has never, and will never, stand still.
