《Finding Emma》Chapter 10

I wake up to hear screaming.
-
-
"Emma?" I ask, shooting up. Someone's hand is covering her mouth, and she looks at me, eyes wide as she desperately tries to reach out to me.
-
-
"Emma!" I yell, but someone is holding me back. I groan, the right side of my abdomen pulsing. It got damaged on the ship.
-
-
I see a bald head, and Edgar pops up behind her, grinning at me. "Found ya," he laughs.
-
-
I frown and try to kick the factionless guard off, but his grip is strong. I watch Edgar shove Emma into the car and I yell. They can't take her away from me, again.
-
-
I hear screaming from the truck, and Edgar shoves me in the back with Emma too. It's tight and hard to breathe in the back of the truck. My heart starts pounding; Edgar knows that this will upset me. He's a suckup to my own mother, after all.
-
-
Emma screams and I gather her into my arms. "Emma," I whisper. "I'm so sorry."
-
-
"DADA!" She yells, sobbing. "Dada."
-
-
I rub her back and push her into my chest. She cries into my shoulder again and I hold her tightly to me. "It will be okay, Emma," I whisper. I start to feel dizzy. The truck is moving, bouncing up and down as we hit boulders. "My mother won't be too harsh to us," I explain to her.
-
-
I try to wipe the acid rain off her face but it's caked onto her so well it's almost impossible to take off.
-
-
She leans against me and closes her eyes. I pet her hair with my hand and sigh.

We arrive some time later at Erudite Headquarters. A guard takes Emma from me and another one handcuffs me. Emma sees that I'm next to her and she looks at me, making sure I won't disappear. I know that the city confuses her, because she's never been in a place this crowded before. The Fringe is on the opposite side of the spectrum.
-
-
"Emma, I'm right here," I remind her, walking next to her and looking her straight into the eyes. "We're together. It's okay."
-
-
Edgar leads us up not to Evelyn's office, but to the cells. He opens one with a black wristband he possesses, and shoves me and Emma into it. The guard takes the handcuffs off of me and then closes the door.
-
-
Emma sobs, standing in the corner. "Dada," she cries, her voice cracking.
-
-
"Emma, I need you to look at me," I say, crouching down next to her. I tilt her head up so she's looking into my eyes.
-
-
"We're in this together, okay? I promise I won't leave you. We'll get through it. You and I," I whisper to her, putting my hands on her tiny shoulders. She whimpers and toddles into my arms, pressing her face against my neck.
-
-
I rub her back as she cries. We sit against the wall, her in my lap, and I hug her so close to me.
-
-
"Daddy," she whispers when she stops crying.
-
-
"I'm your family now," I whisper to her, rocking her in my arms. She looks up at me, tears spilling down her cheeks.
-
-
I wipe them carefully with my calloused hands, and stare down at her. The little girl whose parents died trying to protect her. Who was so alone and scared, who cares for me so much. Whose memory almost got taken away, because of the Bureau. The little girl who was bound to grow up scared and alone. And all I want to do is protect her from that. I want her to feel loved, and special, and cared for.

"Emma," I whisper, pushing her hair behind her ear. "I love you," It's the first time I've ever said it to her, but it couldn't be more true.
-
-
Tris is right. I've become emotionally attached to Emma. But that's okay, because I know Emma is attached to me too.
-
-
"Love you," my Emma repeats to me, pushing her hand onto my cheek. I take it off of my cheek and kiss it gently.
-
-
"C'mere, Baby Girl," I whisper, pulling her into a hug again.
-
-
Just then, the door opens. Edgar stands at the door, smirking and crossing his arms.
-
-
"Four, I need you to talk with Evelyn," he says. "Leave the girl here."
-
-
I look down at Emma, who's looking up at me, nervous. "Why do I have to leave her?" I ask.
-
-
"Do you want her to be safe?" Edgar retorts. "Leave her."
-
-
I set Emma on the floor and she whimpers. "I'll be right back, I promise," I whisper to her. She holds my hand tightly and looks up at me, scared.
-
-
Edgar yanks my arm and I gasp in pain; it's the arm that got damaged from the plane crash.
-
-
The second the door shuts, Emma toddles over and presses her hands against the glass, looking at me.
-
-
"False alarm," Edgar says, punching me in the face. The guards next to me grab my legs and pull me. Emma screams, her tiny palms pressed against the glass.
-
-
Edgar laughs, punching me in the places I'm wounded. I yell out, trying to kick my way away from them. "This is fun," Edgar laughs, throwing his fist into my abdomen. I yell, freeing my hand from one of the guards' grasps and punching Edgar in the face.
-
-
Edgar's face slackens, and anger boils up inside of him. He yells, raging, and smacks his fist right onto my forehead. A guard shoves me against the wall.
-
-
The room starts to spin, and I'm getting dizzy. Edgar laughs, dragging me back into the room, and locking it.
-
-
Emma screams, holding onto my legs. "DADA!" She yells, crying. "Dada!"
-
-
I feel lightheaded, and the last thing I hear is Emma's screams before it all goes black.
