《Finding Emma》Chapter 9

"Emma!" I cry out. I watch the guards drag her towards another door.

-

-

I immediately jump into action, kicking a guard in the shin as he falls. The other one grabs hold of Emma very tightly, and she screams bloody murder in his arms. I reach for her, gripping onto her legs. The guard tries to pull her away from me, but I've got a strong grip. Emma screams even louder.

-

-

"It's okay, Emma!" I shout, letting her legs go and, with all of my force, kicking the guard in the crotch. He falls, letting go of Emma, and I catch her just in time. Her blond hair falls into her face and she looks up at me, eyes glistening.

-

-

"We have to go," I say quietly, looking around. I know David will be coming any minute, and we need to find a ship.

-

-

"I'm going to run, okay Emma?" I ask her. She grips onto me tightly and sobs into my black shirt.

-

-

I grip her tighter and sprint out of the nursery, heading towards the ships. I find a relatively small one, with weapons attached to it as well. "We're going in here," I explain to Emma. She continues to cry, her face buried deep into my shoulder. I yank the door open and shut it, setting Emma on the floor. She looks up at me, her eyes still welling with tears. I grab her hand and bring her into the cockpit.

-

-

"The only safe place for you to be is in one of the seats," I say, quickly strapping her in. I sling the bag off of my shoulder and set it behind my chair. "I'm going to be controlling this thing now, okay?" I ask her.

-

-

I get into my seat, strap on the seatbelts and pull a lever. 'Here we go..." I start, as the plane lifts above the ground.

-

-

Emma starts to scream again, looking out the window. I think she's afraid of heights, too. I look outside and shiver. We're far from close to the ground.

-

"We're gonna go past the wall," I yell to her, trying to reguide the ship to the electronic wall. A ship raises in the air behind me and starts to follow.

-

-

"We're here alone, Emma," I say loudly. "Somebody's following us, but we're alone in this ship. It's going to be okay, I promise." I try to talk over her loud crying.

-

-

I hear a boom and feel the ship alter. "Oh no," I say. I notice the weaponry buttons are all on Emma's side.

-

-

"Emma, look at me!" I yell, trying to look at her. She screams, gripping onto her chair, as tears roll down her chubby cheeks. "Emma look!" I yell.

-

-

She turns her head and looks at me, visually scared. I point to a blue button.

-

-

"Emma, can you hit that for me?" I ask her. She looks down at the blue button, and back at me.

-

-

"Emma, push it," I instruct her. "If you push it we'll be okay. We need to break open the wall and get through it before we crash."

-

-

She looks at the blue button and points to it. "That one," I say. She looks back up at me.

-

-

"For goodness sakes, Emma, if you push that button you can call me Dada for the rest of your life," I exclaim. The ship closes in on us, and I know we're going to crash into the wall and die.

-

-

"Dada," she says, pushing the blue button. I sigh as the guns below us fire into the wall, breaking a hole in it. We slide right through, and the ship behind us stops.

-

-

"We did it Emma!" I yell. "Good job. We're okay."

-

-

I hear a warning sound and the lights in the ship turn completely off. A red light flashes. It's going to crash.

-

-

"Emma HOLD ON!" I yell, directing the ship downwards. I see a pile of hay, and I direct the blow towards that. I squeeze my eyes shut and feel the impact.

-

The ship stops, and Emma and I hang in the air, dangling. The seatbelts are the only things keeping us from falling onto the glass. Emma starts to cry again, shrieking.

-

-

"Emma I'm here!" I say, wiping some blood off of my cheek and carefully unbuckling myself. I see that the bag has slid onto the glass, and I hop down carefully. I pick it up, sling it across my shoulder and walk over to where Emma is hanging.

-

-

"I'm right below you," I say, looking straight into her scared hazel eyes as she stretches all four of her limbs out towards me. "Dada," she cries. I unbuckle her seatbelts and she falls straight into my arms.

-

-

"I've got you," I whisper to her as she grips onto me like a koala bear. She buries her face into my shoulder and cries, cries her eyes out. I shush her and look through the ship with her on my shoulder to find anything else. I find some more food supplies and stuff them all into the backpack.

-

-

"We're going to the city now," I say, as I walk out of the ship with her in my arms. She sniffles into my shoulder and her breathing slows.

-

-

As I walk through the toxic wasteland, little Emma sleeps soundly on my shoulder. I can't believe that Tris would just let me go like that. She must not truly care about me if she trusts David more than I do. Well, I don't need her anymore anyway. I have little Emma with me. Emma will always trust me. More than Tris ever could or ever would.

-

-

I rub Emma's little back, looking for a safe place to call shelter. I am becoming tired myself, and my leg aches from the crash. Finally, I find a large building that has been partly destroyed. I rush into it, looking up at the sky. It's going to rain. Acid rain.

-

-

A few drops fall on my skin and sting. All of the sudden, thunder crashes and it starts to pour.

-

-

The acid wakes little Emma up, and she looks around, alert. She notices the acid rain covering the both of us, and a look of terror slowly appears on her face. She starts to scream as if somebody was stabbing her.

-

-

"Hey, hey," I say, covering her with my arms. "Emma, it's okay. You don't have to freak out. We're heading for shelter."

-

-

"DADA!" She screams, stretching her arms out and sobbing. I break out into a run and head straight for the shelter. We're almost there. I think Emma's having a PTSD episode; she must still remember the Fringe if she's freaking out like this.

-

-

The second we reach under the shelter, Emma buries her face into my neck and starts to cry again. I sit down and rock her back and forth, brushing her blonde hair streaked with red acid rain back. She pushes her hands against my back and nestles her head even closer to me.

-

-

"Emma, there's nothing you need to worry about," I whisper. "You're safe with me now. Those bad men were trying to take your memories away from you. I couldn't let you forget me, and I couldn't let you leave me yet. That's why we're back in the Fringe. That's why we're here, Emma. We'll be safe soon, once we get back to the city and ally with the Allegiant."

-

-

"Dada," Emma cries, pulling away from me and looking into my eyes sadly. She looks just as miserable as she was a week ago.

-

-

"I guess I am your Dada now, Emma," I sigh, brushing her hair back and wiping the tears streaming down her tiny cheeks. "We're in this together."

-

-

Her tummy rumbles and she looks down at it, then looks back at me. "You're hungry," I say, pulling out the loaf of bread I kept in my bag.

-

-

We split the bread and eat it together, making sure not a crumb is spilled. Emma begins to become drowsy again, and I flip her around so she's leaning against my back. Her eyes close and she's sound asleep.

-

-

I know we're alone out here, and that it's going to be raining out there for awhile, so I decide to get some rest too. I'm going to need it for the trip back. I close my eyes and sleep whisks me away.
