Cricket was very excited for school. She usually enjoyed school, but today felt a little more special. The fifteen year old was fixing herself up in front of the mirror in her room. She had dark skin and dark, rich, brown hair, which fell over her shoulders in big curly masses. Large, golden coloured glasses framed her bright, brown eyes. She was wearing a mustard yellow sweater, black capris, and yellow slip-ons. She picked up her book bag with a honey comb design on it and put it on over her shoulder. She scrunched her nose at her reflection.
"Cricket!" Her mother called from downstairs. Cricket hurriedly went downstairs where Katydid was cooking eggs and bacon in the kitchen.
Katydid was a busy single mom that wished she could stay home with her two daughters more often. But unfortunately, her job demanded that she work in far away cities for weeks at a time. She had black hair that was pulled up in a messy ponytail, and her skin was a dark olive. She almost always had concerned wrinkles etched between her eyebrows. Today she was wearing a white apron with a few grease smears on it. She was serving bacon onto two plates.
Cricket saw Bumblebee playing with stuffed mango toy on the floor. She scooped up the adorable giggling toddler and kissed her forehead. Bumblebee was small with a little button nose and dark hair fuzz on her head. She was wearing a onesie with black and yellow stripes on it.
"Here, eat quick." Katydid expertly set the table, put dirty dishes in the sink, and took Bumblebee to start feeding her, all in one fluid motion.
Cricket ate quickly, watching in amusement as Bumblebee made a mess of her breakfast. She checked the clock, the bus would be here soon. She cleared her dishes, gave Katydid a hug, grabbed her book bag and headed out the door.
The bus came to a screeching stop in front of her and the doors slid open. She found a free seat towards the back of the bus. Once seated, she gazed out the window, wondering what was going to happen today.
