《A helping hand (American Dragon: Jake Long Fic)》Ch. 3

Jake felt like Lynn was becoming like family. They were close friends and seemed to connect over having big fates so young. Sighing to himself, he went off to school. He was getting a lot more time off from dragon business lately until now. There was some cartel of magical possessions going around and he was to put a stop to it. That's how he found himself with Nigel thrall.
"Good to see you long!" Jake groaned.
"It's never a pleasure Nigel. What you doing with this stuff anyway?"
Nigel tutted him but looked upset at the thugs below them.
"My family's heirloom was stolen by these insolent trash. I'm here to get it back and put a end to these rascals. Truce?"
Jake nodded, that was unfair to have your family's prized possession taken away. They were able to stop most of the goons but they were stuck in a crate. Nigel's wand was outside and Jake was surrounded by Sphinx hair. Nigel was able to get most of it off but Jake was down.
"Now what?"
Jake looked around and saw tons of magical artifacts.
"Can't you use magic with all this junk?"
Nigel laughed.
"Good idea, but I think you forgot the part where I don't have my wand! Normally if I did, with all these artifacts I would have a large boost to my magic than normal. Too bad wand-less magic isn't possible for me."
Jake widens his eyes at that.
"Maybe you.."
Jake brought up his hand and focused all his power to produce a flame into the second bead. Lynn's face was out of sight but she called out to him.
"What's up long?"
"Can you get to where I am and help?"
Lynn was finishing her training when Jake called.

"Yeah, where are you-"
"I don't know, can you find me?"
Lynn grew worried but answered.
"Yeah, you're scaring me but I'm guessing Sphinx hair has been involved. See you soon."
When the call ended Nigel was staring at long betrayed. Jake raised an eyebrow.
"You know another wizard and have been hanging around her? For shame long for shame!"
Jake rolled his eyes.
"You're not the only magical being in my life Nigel." "Yeah but I was the only wizard! Who is this witch? Someone from Brixingtin? Or Horringford!"
Before Jake could say anything Lynn's portal appeared before them. She walked through easily and winced at the sight of them.
"Oh Jake, you're really down on power huh? You must be another friend in the know I'm Lynn."
Nigel just stared up at the beauty before him. She was graceful and smart. Jake coughed and Lynn turned back to him. "
What do you need me to do-oh, oh my."
She saw all the artifacts and smiled.
"Is that first generation Krenix!"
Nigel sighed lovingly.
"She even knows her historical facts! And there's a jinglehen over there!"
The two geeked out over the artifacts for a moment before Jake whistled at them.
"Not the time nerds! Lynn can you used this stuff to help us."
Lynn huffed at him.
"It's not just stuff Jake! But yeah, I'm gonna need assistance. My mana is only enough to use one of these items."
Nigel nodded. The energies radiating from the items were too much for one wizards magic. It could effect how their magic works and damage it.
"I don't have my wand and long is out of commission. I don't see yours on you either-"
"what happen to your wand?"

Nigel pointed out side of their crate door.
"The miscreants got their hands on it and are using it to create damage to all these artifacts. We need a plan."
Jake sighed but nodded.
"I think I got one. Lynn, stick with Nigel and help him get his wand. I'll create a distraction for you two when Lynn gets us out."
Lynn turned to Nigel and nodded before pointing out a articfact behind him.
"Is that a Duexie di ten?"
Nigel turned at that and Lynn opened the door while he wasn't looking. Jake was about to comment but she stared at him pleadingly.
"Woah! I didn't even hear you say the spell."
Lynn smiled nervously.
"I..am experimenting with spells. I can do plenty with out incantations for them to work. My mentor is helping me learn and create them. I can show them to you later if you want."
Nigel seemed to believe it and they made their way to the wand.
"Come on, look how they flick my wand around like it's nothing.Quite enough of that, return my wand from his hands, flip it back with the power in my hand."
It wasn't working since it was in a new holder. Nigel repeated his words three times but he was away from his wand long enough. Lynn grabbed his hand.
"Together."
He nodded.
"With powers of dawn, bring back thy wand!"
It worked and Nigel felt his mana course through him as he held his wand. Lynn patted his arm to stop his celebration. The thieves were staring at them.
"Well, this is a sticky situation, but not enough. From fish to sea, make my enemies sticky!"
Nigel said as their enemies were sticking to the walls or each other. Lynn hummed.
"Nice one, lets get to the artifacts. We can work together and help Jake."
When they went back to the crate it wasn't a pretty sight. Jake was back his dragon self but he was still weak. The leader was a dark mage.
"Fools are you young warlock and witch. You can not compare to my power."
He was holding a artifact too which didn't help them. Lynn sucked away from his spell and took cover with Nigel.
"What now, I don't think we have enough time to think of a proper spell."
Lynn smiled.
"But what if we did?"
She held out her hand which was holding a time glass. He clasped her other hand easily.
"With this power in hand, turn back the times of sand."
Nigel was surprised Lynn knew so powerful spells but it worked.

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
