A gloomy Steven lying belly-down on Lion's back, is carried up the cliff overlooking the Crystal Temple, as Connie sets up a picnic on the hill.
"Steven, hurry up!" Connie says as she prepares the mat for the picnic.
Steven falls face first off from Lion's back.
"Are you okay?" Connie asks concerned.
"I'm fine..." Steven says not even lifting his face up from the ground.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Connie asks again now as she hands Steven a sandwich from the picnic basket.
Steven sits up and takes the sandwich. "Yeah..." He says as he eats the sandwich sadly and slowly.
"Is Y/n not with you today?" Connie asks as she was used to seeing Y/n with Steven regularly now.
"He's working with dad at the car wash..." Steven says sadly and slowly again.
"Okay, uh... So, um... Is this fence new?" Connie asks and points to the fence that is now surrounding the entire cliff.
"Uh, it's a long story." Steven says.
"Is it a magic story?!" Connie asks excitedly.
"M..ay..be?" Steven draws out.
"Well, what happened? Tell me, please." Connie says.
Steven sighs. "Okay, okay. But it's not a happy story."
Steven then begins retelling the story, flashing back to the events that occurred.
Amethyst was horsing around, by the cliff as Steven watched on worriedly.
"Amethyst, be careful!" Steven calls out to her.
Amethyst laughs. "Steven, why are you getting so worked up?" She makes a mock-lovestruck face. "Why? Do you care about me or something?"
"Yes..." Steven says looking visibly worried.
"Ah, Steven, I didn't mean to make you..." She then pretends to fall backwards. "Woah, woah!"
"Amethyst, stop! You're gonna fall!" Steven cries out.
Amethyst continues horsing around. "Ooh... Steven!" She giggles. "I'm gonna fa-all!"
Steven now chases Amethyst. "Amethyst, you're gonna get hurt!"
Amethyst comes to a stand at the edge of the cliff. "Steven, please, I'm a Gem warrior. I'm not gonna fa..." but ironically, the ground underneath Amethyst gives way, and she falls off the cliff.
As Amethyst was falling she facepalms. "Ugh, this is so embarrassing." She manages to land onto a rock leaving sharp cracking sound to be heard. "Ow!"
"A-Aahhh!" Steven worries.
"Woah, Amethyst are you alright?" A voice says and she looks to see Y/n stood on the beach near where she had landed.
"I'm okay!" Amethyst cries out to Steven and Y/n.
Steven runs all the way from the hill to the beach. He then collapses next to Amethyst, exhausted and panting heavily.
"You sure you're okay?" Steven asks her again.
"Yes, Steven, I'm fine." Amethyst brushes him off.
"Well...everything except for this..." Y/n says lifting a piece of Amethyst hair to reveal an enlarged eye, when Garnet and Pearl comes running over and they can see her enlarged eye.
Pearl gasps worried. "Amethyst!
"Ugh, great." Amethyst groans.
"Show me your gem!" Pearl says as she reaches towards Amethyst.
Amethyst just slaps Pearl's hand away. "Fresh!"
Garnet however grabs Amethyst's arm and pulls down her shirt, revealing a crack in her gem.
"Amethyst! Your gem is cracked!" Pearl says horrified.
"Rude!" Amethyst says as she blushes and covers up her gem. "Ah- It's not a big deal! Plus, now I have this cool googly eye." She shakes her enlarged eye around and Steven laughs at the eye .
"How did this even happen?" Pearl asks Steven and Y/n now.

"I was walking towards the beach house to see you all when she fell off the cliff by the lighthouse." Y/n says pointing up at the cliff.
"Did not!" Amethyst is quick to deny.
"Of course... How could I have been so blind?" Pearl says looking up at the cliff. "We need to put a fence up there, so this will never happen again!"
The story ends, returning back to Steven and Connie.
"And that's why there's a fence. The end!" Steve says as he chomps the sandwich in hand.
"Wait, what happened to Amethyst?" Connie asks.
"Uhhh..." Steven stammers and looks away.
"C'mon! Tell me the rest!" Connie says wanting to know.
"I don't wanna." Steven says sadly.
"Steven?" Connie asks and Steven looks away, unyielding. "Steven." She says sweetly and Steven starts trembling and murmuring. "Steven!" Connie says more dominantly this time.
Steven trembles faster and groans louder, before he gives in. "Okay, okay! But only if you let me try on your glasses."
"Only if you give me the rest of your juice." Connie says.
"Okay, but it's mostly backwash." Steven warns her.
"Good enough." Connie says as she and Steven trade their items.
Steven puts on Connie's glasses. "How do I look?" He asks and makes a goofy smile.
Connie was squinting her eyes. "I have no idea."
"Well... um... So... we were all worried about Amethyst."
"So, what's the problem? Amethyst falls on stuff all the time." Steven asks.
"It'd be fine if it was just her body, but her gem is damaged." Pearl explains.
"Is it possible to fix it?" Y/n asks.
"Before... we had Rose." Pearl says sadly now.
"Steven, your mother had healing tears that flowed from her gem. She felt real love for those around her. She felt real sorrow when they were hurt. You have the Rose Quartz gem now. I know that power is in you, too." Garnet says to Steven.
"Amethyst! Show me your gem!" Steven says.
"Yeah, all right." Amethyst says and she pulls down her shirt enough to reveal her gem.
"The power... to heal." Steven whisper as he does an elegant and dramatic entry, like he is being wrapped by a vine and then burst out in a flurry of roses.
"This is odd, even for you guys." Y/n says as watches Steven starting to strain in front of Amethyst's gem bit nothing happens.
"It's not working. I guess I'm just too tough to cry." Steven says crossing his arms.
"Just today, you were crying about snakes." Pearl says to him.
Steven looks saddened. "They don't have any arms!"
"So what do we do now?" Y/n asks as he looks at Amethyst's Gem.
"We have no choice. We need to take Amethyst to Rose's Healing Spring." Garnet says.
Amethyst scoffs. "Guys, I'm fine, I'm not gonna get any worrrrrrrr..." But she pops and starts speaking backwards.
Steven, Y/n, Garnet and Pearl look at each other with concerns.
The group warp to a bramble-covered canyon.
"And in the center of the garden, Rose's Fountain!" Pearl tells Y/n and Steven. "Overflowing with your mother's healing, lacrimal essence Steven!"
Garnet looks around. "I don't see it."
"Wha..." Pearl gasps and she notices the garden is overran by massive vines and brambles.
Amethyst begins to speak again but it is a unintelligible backwards mess.
"Now, now! Let's keep it together! Our memories of Rose can't be tainted by some overgrown brambles!" Pearl nervously chuckles. "Look at them. They're a mess without her guidance. Directionless, pathetic, clinging things." She says before clinging to Y/n herself. "It's going to be okay, Garnet!" She then shouts.

Garnet looks at Pearl and shrugs. "Sure."
"Y-You really think so?" Pearl asks.
"Healing tears...!" Steven continues to strain himself, as Amethyst lies next to him, waiting impatiently.
"Hmm... Maybe there's a path over here!" Pearl says as she leaves the area with Garnet.
Amethyst begins talking backwards again as Y/n and Steven watch her before she slaps herself in the face and imitates crying.
"Pain can make you cry?" Y/n guesses from Amethyst's actions.
Amethyst nods her head in agreement.
"Where is pain?" Steven asks before he looks at Y/n. "Y/n! You got cause me pain."
"Steven I can't hit you, I would feel so bad if I did." Y/n says truthfully.
"Awww. That's okay I couldn't hurt you either." Steven says with a smile to him.
Steven then sees at the brambles all over him. He then slowly approaches them, covering up his eyes, and tries to stick his index finger into a thorn of the brambles. The brambles then suddenly animate and reach towards him.
"Steven!" Y/n calls out to warn him as he just notices it but Amethyst quickly tackles Steven out of the way just in time.
"AMETHYST!" Pearl's voice could be heard shouting as she and Garnet return. "No more roughhousing, you'll exacerbate your crack!"
Before Y/n and Steven can defend Amethyst however she tires to talk only for it to come out backwards again. Amethyst then attempts to walk away, but she accidentally reverses herself and walks straight-on into a rock. Pearl gasps in shock as Amethyst collapses onto the ground, her crack beginning to worsen.
"Aw, right in the gem!" Steven cringes.
Amethyst begins coughing and speaking backwards again. Amethyst's body then starts glitching, causing her head and foot to switch places. Amethyst groans in annoyance.
Pearl starts panicking. "Ohh! Oh! Keep calm. What we need to do is to get you into the fountain immediately, if we can ever find a way through all this mess!"
Garnet shushes Pearl as she pulls out a rock from the brambles in the background. She then summons her gauntlet and punches the rock through the brambles with an unprecedented force, creating a tunnel to Rose's Fountain. "I needed that." She comments before turning to others. "This way."
"We could've probably gotten in without hurdling a giant rock..." Pearl begins chuckling nervously. "into Rose's most precious sanctuary! But if you're okay with it, I'm fine, too!" She chuckles and walks off.
"You need some help?" Y/n asks Amethyst now but she speaks backwards and rolls her eyes.
"I'm going to assume that's you pretending you got it but still needing help." Y/n says as he picks Amethyst up now and helps carry her.
The group proceeds through the tunnel to Rose's Fountain that is overgrown with brambles and with no water in sight.
"This isn't right." Garnet comments.
Steven looks around the fountain once belonging to his mother, surrounded by brambles everywhere while Y/n sets Amethyst down.
"What's not right?" Y/n asks Garnet.
"The fountain isn't running." Garnet observes.
"What?! W-what's wrong with it?" Pearl asks.
"I'm not sure." Garnet responds.
Y/n now looks up at the statue of a large woman in the fountain. "Steven Is that... your Mom?" He asks.
Steven's eyes begin to water as he looks up at it. "Oh, oh, I'm getting emotional! I think it's happening! Uh, I'm really feeling it!" Steven leans over Amethyst and starts straining to cry again, while Y/n, Pearl and Garnet watch.
The flashback then abruptly cuts back to Steven and Connie.
Steven falls over. "Ahh! Headache!"
"So give back my glasses and finish the story!" Connie says desperate to know what happens.
Steven returns Connie her glasses, and the flashback continues, with Steven still not crying and nothing happening.
"Ah, come on! I had it!" Steven says frustrated.
Pearl sighs. "Steven, it's fine. Just...Just stay here and help Y/n watch Amethyst. We'll find out what's wrong with the fountain." Pearl says.
"No, no. Wait! I can still do it!" Steven says determined and he stretches his eyes.
The crack in Amethyst's gem worsens again, causing Amethyst's body to fall apart.
"You can leave it to us." Y/n says and Garnet and Pearl start to leave but Steven chases after them.
"Wait, wait! It might still happen! Guys?" He calls out but Garnet and Pearl continue to leave, ignoring the dejected Steven. Amethyst then rams into Steven with her head.
"Ahh!" He calls out in shock.
"Sorry." Y/n says and Steven looks at him. "I picked up her head but Amethyst kind of somehow leaped towards you."
Steven turns and sees Amethyst's body trying to round itself up; her hand bouncing her leg like a ball.
"I don't understand this! I don't understand anything! Why is everyone acting so strange? Why can't I..." Steven looks at Rose's statue at the fountain conflicted now. "WHY CAN'T I CRY?!"
The place echoes back his "Why can't I cry?" startling him.
Y/n moves to stand beside Steven now as he gently puts his hand on Steven's shoulder. "You want to talk about it buddy?" He asks him a little worried.
"It's just... I mean, I don't know how to feel about her, but everyone else does." Steven says moving to stand near the statue of his mom now. "I wish I could have met her then this place would make me sad, and I could cry healing tears... like mom." He climbs and lies on the lap of Rose's statue.
Steven then suddenly hears sniffling sounds. The flashback cuts away, revealing it is Connie, getting emotional and tearing up.
"Are you okay?" Steven asks.
Connie sniffles and nods her head. "Keep going." She bites a sandwich.
Y/n climbs onto the fountain now moving to the statue. "Steven... it's okay." Y/n reassures him in a calm tone as he stands at the edge of the statue. "I've never met Rose either." He says looking up at the statue of her now. "From the way the Gems talk about her, I get the feeling she was an amazing woman." He starts and Steven curls up sadly. "But I think she would have to be if she was going to be the mom of the most amazing person I know..." Y/n says and Steven looks at him. "You may have some pretty cool gem powers Steven, but that's not what makes you amazing. You're far kinder than anyone I have ever met and you always care about the others. I'm sure you're mother would be proud of you." Y/n says looking down at Steven now with a smile.
Steven gazes up at the statue of his mother now when Amethyst suddenly interrupts his trance by hooting and screaming loudly. Steven then puts his hand over her mouth, stopping her noise. He then turns his head and gasps. The brambles all around come alive and begin attacking Steven, Y/n and Amethyst, catching and squeezing on Amethyst's foot and hand. The three try to flee, but get blocked by a series of animated bushes, and have to run back towards the fountain.
"Ahh! Amethyst, where's your gem?" Steven asks her.
Amethyst uses her other hand to point where her body is, as more bushes chase her.
"Get into the fountain I got it!" Y/n says to Steven and the two split as he quickly runs faster and tackles Amethyst's body. Both of them collide and roll to join Steven into the center of the fountain, where the bushes cannot reach them.
Y/n looks down at Amethyst now and clenches his fist when he sees the state of her gem. "Steven..." He says.
Steven looks down and can now see Amethyst's gem is on the verge of shattering. "Amethyst, I'm sorry! I can't do anything right. Now I'm going to lose you, and it's all my fault."
"It's not your fault Steven." Y/n is quick to tell him. "We'll find a way to save Amethyst."
Amethyst glitches and with some effort she speaks normally. "Ha-ha... You guys care.. about... me."
Steven hugs Amethyst tightly. "Please let me be a magic healer..." Steven starts weeping, and a tear drips off his face and onto Amethyst's gem. Steven gasps in joy as he and Y/n watch in anticipation, but Amethyst's gem remains cracked.
"Oh, come on!" Steven says annoyed.
Suddenly, the whole place starts rumbling. "What's happening?" Y/n quickly asks. "Protect Amethyst's gem." He then says to Steven but Pink water begins to flow out of Rose's Fountain, washing over Y/n, Steven and Amethyst and flooding the whole place. The bushes disperse away from the fountain and roses bloom on them. The brambles also begin to disappear as they blossom into flowers, allowing sunlight to shine into the now-lively sanctuary again.
Y/n opens his eyes and quickly swims to the surface of the waters letting out a gasp of air. He quickly looks around to see if Steven and Amethyst had surfaced. "Steven? Amethyst?" He calls out.
Steven, from underwater, thinks he sees his mother reaching down towards him. He swims up to the water surface and finds it is just the statue. Amethyst then bumps into him, floating on the water and fully healed.
"Look at these guys, saving my life and junk." Amethyst says now back to normal.
Y/n let out a sigh of relief at the sight and he quickly swims over to Steven and Amethyst who were laughing in joy. Y/n envelops them in a hug joining in with their laughter with a slight tear in his eye.
"Oh, thank goodness." Pearl's voice cries out and the three turn to see her and Garnet stood at the fountains edge.
"Did you see what I did?" Steven asks excited. "It was magic! My tears brought the fountain back to life and saved Amethyst!" He says as he swims with Y/n and Amethyst towards Garnet and Pearl.
Pearl looks at Garnet for a moment. "I'm pretty sure Garnet and I unplugging the clogged chamber brought the fountain back to life."
"We saved Amethyst." Garnet says.
"You don't think my crying was... a little related to that?" Steven asks.
"Oh, Steven, you don't have healing tears. You'll never have any real magic powers, and we don't want anything more to do with you." Pearl says now and a saddened Steven looks at Pearl.
"She didn't really say that!" Connie's voice interrupts and the flashback ends, cutting back to Connie and Steven.
"No... but that's what it felt like." Steven says now.
"Is that why you've been so down?" Connie asks Steven and he only sadly shrugs. "Oh... You can have your juice back."
"Nah, that's okay." Steven sniffles and sigh. "The Gems expect me to be like my mom. What if I never get those powers?" He asks.
"Then you'll be like me and Y/n. That's not so bad, right?" Connie asks.
"But if I don't have powers, then I can't hang out with Amethyst or Garnet or Pearl, and I-I can't go on missions! Steven starts tearing up.
"You don't need any powers to be here with me." Connie says. Connie then takes a sip of the juice and leans forward to Steven, but suddenly stops. "Ow. Ugh." She places her hand on her forehead.
"What's wrong?" Steven asks.
"I thin.. There's just..." She takes off her glasses. "Something wrong with my glasses. My..." But Connie's vision suddenly becomes clear without the glasses. "My eyes. I-I-I can see!"
"What?" Steven asks shocked.
"I can see without my glasses!" Connie says still in shock.
"Did I heal your eyes? But how?" Steven asks confused.
Both Steven and Connie stare at the juice box Steven gave to Connie, and Connie drops it in shock.
Steven gasps. "The juice box! I don't have healing tears, I have healing spit!"
"What am I going to tell my parents? What am I going to tell my optometrist?!" Connie begins to panic.
"I don't even know! Oh, thank you, Connie!" Steven hugs Connie now as he gets up. "Lion, let's go tell the Gems, they're never going to believe this!"
Steven and Lion rush down the hill, leaving Connie alone. She looks at her glasses now then pops the lenses out of her glasses and puts them on as the wind blows in her hair.
