《Grimm Season 6 Episode 14: In the Nick of Time》Chapter Six

It was hours after the Spice Shop was supposed to be closed, and Monroe and Rosalee were waiting for Nick to show up.

"Should we call them?" Monroe asked. He was pacing around anxiously, checking out the window from time to time. He would walk over to the counter, straighten out a jar, walk back to the window and check outside, walk into the back room, and walk up to the window again.

"They said they would be here in a few hours," Rosalee comforted. "Let's give them a little more time."

"Right," Monroe nodded. "They'll be here." He didn't sound convinced.

He and Rosalee both got nervous when meetings didn't go as planned. The world they lived in with Nick and the others was a dangerous one, and it wasn't hard to imagine something bad happening to someone they cared about. When people were late, it usually meant something had gone wrong.

Monroe was about to ignore his conscience and his wife by picking up the phone when he heard a car pull up outside.

"That must be them," Monroe said with a sigh of relief.

Nick filed into the shop with Hank, Wu, and Trubel following behind him.

"Hey, guys," Monroe greeted as he met them at the door. Rosalee, moving out from behind the counter, smiled at them.

Nick looked around at piles of cardboard, bubble wrap, and plastic packaging. Then, his eyes traveled through the room, taking in the assembled toys and other items for children. "What have you guys been doing?" he asked.

"Monroe picked up some baby items at the store today. We thought we would try to put everything together while we had some extra time in between customers," Rosalee explained. Monroe walked over and showed Nick one of three woodland critter baby mobiles. He was proud of the fact that he and Rosalee had been able to finish them.

"Take a look at these, man," Monroe said excitedly.

"That's great," Nick agreed, examining Monroe's work. "They're like Kelly's."

"Even though Kelly's was nearly impossible to put together, I liked how it turned out," Monroe admitted. "I think I have it down, though. If I ever have to put another one of these -"

Rosalee interrupted him. "It took some teamwork," Rosalee said. "But that's enough about that. I know you didn't come down here to talk about baby mobiles."

"Not really," Nick confessed. He shot glances in Hank, Wu, and Trubel's direction. They were waiting for Nick to get on with it. "We need help with a missing persons' case."

"What do you need our help with?" Monroe asked, not really sure how their knowledge was relevant to a missing persons' case.

"Can people become Wesen?" Trubel asked.

"You mean Kehrseite?" Rosalee clarified.

"Yeah," Hank said.

"I'm not really sure," Rosalee said. "It wouldn't surprise me if a powerful being or spell could have a side effect that led to the creation of a Wesen-like being, but anything more than that..."

"But it could be possible?" Hank asked.

Rosalee shrugged. "I've never specifically heard of Wesen being created before. Even Hexenbiests aren't technically Wesen, so what happened to Juliette doesn't really qualify."

"And neither do I because I'm not a type of Wesen, right?" Wu asked.

"Exactly," Rosalee said. "And if you're asking me if someone like Hank, for example, could become an actual Blutbad or Reinigen, I couldn't say that it's possible."

"That's good," Hanks said. "I don't like rats," he grumbled, thinking about the Rat King.

"But is it impossible? Like, completely impossible?" Trubel asked.

"Is anything impossible?" Monroe asked. "I think we should hit the books for this one. Just to be safe."

Everyone in the room nodded in agreement, and Rosalee started pulling books down from some of the shelves. She handed a few off to Trubel and Monroe before leading the group to the basement where the Grimm books were. While she and the others grabbed everything, Nick explained the facts of the case and how Jorge's interview had gone. The group took their cargo and stacked it on the table. As Hank, Wu, and Trubel started turning pages in the Spice Shop books, Rosalee grabbed some Grimm books from the nearby shelves, and Monroe lifted the metal grate in the back of the room and started pulling out the Grimm books that they had never taken out since the night Bonaparte was on a killing spree.

One of the books was the Grimm ancestry book which Rosalee set on a faraway shelf rather than the center table that everyone was gathered around; she didn't think they would need it.

When Monroe and Rosalee finished their task, Nick asked, "Do you think Adalind would know more about this?"

"It's possible," Rosalee said.

Nick pulled out his phone and was about to dial when he paused. He pondered the object in his hand before asking, "Should we ask Eve for help, too?"

"She might know more about this than any of us," Monroe said. "After everything she went through, and did... She's probably done some sort of Wesen-creation, magic spell, Hexenbiest sort of research," he rambled on.

"We can ask her when we get home," Rosalee offered.

Monroe looked at his watch, trying to be inconspicuous. It didn't work. Nick noticed him.

"Maybe you guys should take off. I'll call Adalind and tell her I'm on my way home. I can ask her about the case later," Nick said.

"Okay," Rosalee said, giving in to her exhaustion. "We'll look through the books tomorrow and let you know if we find anything."

Nick nodded. "Okay, I'll see you guys tomorrow."

Monroe grabbed Rosalee's hand after they said goodbye to everyone and led her up the stairs. They disappeared and Nick dialed his phone.

It rang twice.

"Hi, Nick!" Adalind greeted happily, though she sounded tired. "Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, I'm at the Spice Shop. Monroe and Rosalee were helping me with a case," Nick said. "But they just left. I'll be on my way home in a minute."

"Okay," Adalind said. "See you soon. I made dinner."

"I love you," Nick said meaningfully. He loved her, and he was also veryhungry.

"Love you, too."

Nick smiled to himself and hung up the phone.

"I guess we're calling it a night," Nick announced.

"Good," Hank said. "I'm exhausted."

Trubel grabbed a few books off of the table and one from the shelf. "I'll take a few of these back with me. Maybe I'll find something."

Wu grabbed a few, too. "Nothing like reading a few relaxing fairy tales before bed," he said sarcastically.

Trubel raised her eyebrows with amusement, and Nick and Hank exchanged the look they always did when Wu whipped out the snark.

"Bed sounds good right now," Hank said, walking up the stairs as the rest followed behind him.

"It's been a long day," Trubel admitted, feeling anxious and tired as she thought of her visit to the mental institution.

*************

When night came, Cara and Naeva worked with the other girls to prepare dinner. Gina helped them as well, and Olivia, who had been in town buying groceries, returned and set the table. Naeva learned that Olivia and Gina were the only ones that were allowed to leave the cabin.

When dinner was finished, they all sat down at the long dining room table located centrally in the cabin. They were supposed to talk about their days, but Gina talked most of the time; she told cautionary tales about how girl's who left the cabin never came back.

Naeva ate her meal and was surprised by how good it was. Most of the ingredients came straight from the garden and the forest surrounding them.

"What's this?" Naeva asked, skewering a piece of meat with her fork.

"Venison," Gina said, grinning. "Animals are drawn to our happy little home here." That was sadistic Hexenbiest for, "The spell that manipulates your reality, draws you here, and makes you a prisoner of your own mind also attracts the wild animals that we kill and eat." Unfortunately, none of the young women knew what was happening to them or understood the kind of person that Gina really was.

"It's really good," Naeva approved.

"Thank you," Febe said. She was the one that prepared it along with the shy Dove and nervous Gyllene that wouldn't take credit for the group effort.

"This place is amazing," Naeva said. "It's just so, so," she stumbled, looking for the right word. She couldn't find one, so she just sighed blissfully like Cara had done in the garden earlier that day.

The rest of the dinner continued peacefully. When everyone finished eating, they all worked together to clean up the table. They had specific jobs that they were used to doing except Naeva who wandered around and gave extra help to those that needed it. She was fitting in just fine.

As Naeva dried the dishes, Gina came up to her and said, "Come up to my room with me when you're finished here."

Naeva nodded, "Of course. I'll be right up."

"Thank you, dear," she said before she walked up the stairs.

Naeva kept her word and was in Gina's room within five minutes of being asked to come. Gina was waiting for her, sitting on a massive bed with posts that extended to the ceiling and connected to curtains that hung over their tops. Naeva walked over to Gina, and Gina took Naeva's hands in hers.

"I'm glad you like it here," Gina said, rising to her feet so she could stare deep into Naeva's eyes. "I don't know what I would do if you didn't." She grinned, but Naeva didn't see the wickedness in it. Naeva just smiled. "You might be my very favorite.

That was a strong statement for only knowing Naeva for a few hours.

"It's fantastic here," Naeva said. "I want to show it to Jorge."

Gina's eyes widened with worry and displeasure. Naeva, in a single day, lost her name, her identity, and any connection to the outside world. In addition to completely isolating the new girl, the spell she used was extremely potent. Jordan must have been one of those strong personalities that could resist the spell slightly more than the others because she wasn't supposed to be curious at all...

"You can't bring him here," Gina said sternly.

"Why?" Naeva asked.

"Because he doesn't want to come," Gina assured, sounding wickedly gentle. "He left you. He's not coming back."

"Jorge wouldn't do that. We were going to get married," Naeva said, clearly hurt.

"Jorge doesn't love you," Gina said softly. She touched Jordan's face. Touching her victims, strengthened the power of the spell. "You need to forget about him and the others you knew," Gina commanded.

Jordan flinched away without knowing why. Half of her felt happy and at home, and another part of her told her to be suspicious of that. Her anxiety and doubt were spreading through her mind quickly.

"I don't want to leave Jorge. And, what about my family?!" Naeva yelled. She started panicking.

"I'm your family!" Gina hissed, grabbing Naeva's wrists. Naeva morphed and looked at Gina who had done the same. "You belong here."

Naeva was crying and shaking her head. "No," she whimpered.

Gina grabbed her face. "No one will ever love you like I do," she growled. She stroked the feathers on Naeva's face. "Did you think anyone could ever love you like this?!" she demanded aggressively.

"Why did you do this to me?" Naeva cried.

"It's who you are. I could see it in you," Gina snarled. "I'm protecting you from all of the people out there that wouldn't care about you the way I do. People would be afraid of you the way you are now. They would think you're a monster. They would tell you that you should be ashamed of yourself and that you should feel guilty for what you are." Gina was still holding onto Naeva's face. "If you don't want to stay here, maybe you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm giving you shelter, I'm taking you in after Jorge left you, I'm giving you a family and an identity. You should be grateful," Gina hissed.

"I'm sorry!" Naeva sobbed. She waved her hands around to emphasize her earnesty. Gina took her wrists to hold her still. They both woged back into their human forms.

"I'm so sorry," Naeva cried.

"I know," Gina said. She took Naeva into her arms before pushing her away. "If you want to be happy, you need to trust me completely," Gina said sternly.

"I do," Naeva said, nodding.

"Spend some time with the other girls. They'll tell you everything you need to know, and they'll show you how to behave," Gina added. Again, Naeva nodded.

Gina walked over to a vase of flowers that she had in her room and pulled one out. Naeva recognized them from the garden.

Gina tucked the flower into Naeva's hair. "Don't tell the other girls, but you are more special to me than any of them. Don't disappoint me."

Gina was grooming her victim like any other master abuser. She made Naeva feel she was special, she was already making her keep secrets, she kept her isolated from anyone who could tell her the truth, and now she guilted her into thinking no one would love her.

Gina had won Naeva's mind. Naeva was right where Gina wanted her.

Naeva smiled, nodded, and went downstairs to join the others.
