《》The Ultimate Let Down

Tears brim my eyes as I stared at the beautifully set table. He was late.

Granted, it's only been a little over half an hour. But Logan has always been a punctual guy, he'd lose his mind if he was two minutes late. If he cared enough.

I had yet to receive a text from him. Nor a call. I had a mixture of feelings swirling through my body.

Could he have been hurt or injured on his way here? Or did he just forget? I know he doesn't always have his personal phone on during work, people usually call his work line when they need something.

To avoid seeming like the clingy wife, I was having a battle with myself not to call that receptionist and put me through to him.

But now I don't care, I'm calling.

"Carter Publishing Company, this is Maisy speaking, how may I help you today?" I hesitated but just went for it.

"Hey, Maisy! Um, I don't want to take up much of your time but has Logan left yet?"

"Oh, Mrs. Carter! Hi! Mr. Carter is still working actually, would you like me to put him through to you?" Miasy's cheerful voice nearly makes me smile but the deep sadness that settled in the pit of my stomach prevents that.

"No thank you, Maisy. When he decides to remember his wife, tell him that I went home." Maisy stutters a goodbye before I hang up.

Of course he forgot. Why had I foolef myself into thinking that things would go right just this once.

I grabbed my bag and left just as the waiter approached my table for the third time. I said nothing to him as I grabbed my fur coat and walked out of the fancy restaurant.

As soon as I got into the car, Robert, my driver, looked at me but said nothing at the lack of my husband with me. "Where to, ma'am?"

"I'd like to go h— actually could you take me to Olivia's house?" He nods once before pulling away from the restaurant.

Within fifteen minutes, we arrived at my best friend's house. I called her and asked if she was busy which she answered with a no.

I thanked Robert, telling him I wouldn't be too long before walking up to her house. I knock on the door and it opens to show Olivia's wrapped up figure. She had a large blanket wrapped around her body with purple slippers on, her hair a wild curly mess.

"Hey bestie."

I chuckle and hug her before entering. "What the hell have you been doing?"

As I walked further into her house, I could see broken glass and ripped clothes lying all over the floor. Her house was an utter mess.

"Fucking Devin's shit up. You like my work?" She kicks a pair of burned Nike shoes.

"What did he do now?" I sidestep a broken picture frame and sit on the chair where it was clear.

"He fucking cheated on me. Again. With that French bitch. Lysol." She sniffled and started cutting up a pair of his underwear like it was normal.

"Lisa?" She glares at my correction before continuing.

"That's what the hell I said. I found her fucking H cup sized bra under the bed when I was cleaning. DID IT EVER OCCUR TO HIM THAT I WOULD FIND HER MONSTER TITTY BRA?!" She abruptly start screaming like a mad woman.

"Liv! Calm down, where is he now?"

She sighs and brushes her hair from her face, her eyes bloodshot. "He hasn't gotten home yet. I have my knife over there when I hear his key. If he comes the fuck back home."

"How long had it been going on?" I felt so bad for Liv, she's always loved Devin. Gave up everything for that guy.

"Six months." My eyes widened at her answer. She notices and nods with a grimace. "Yup. I've been looking like a fucking idiot for six months. I was so stupid to ignore the signs."

"What signs?"

"He would smell like women's perfume and Devin is far from gay, believe me. He had lipstick on his collar one night, he stopped giving a shit about important dates like our anniversary. He didn't even bother to show up to the dinner. He was busy fucking her. A-and now what am I

s-supposed to do Sar?" She breaks off into a sob and flings his underwear across the room, knocking a bottle of wine over.

It was hard for me to answer because dread had filled my entire being. That sounded all too much like Logan. No, no, Logan loves you. He'd... He could never. Logan loves you.

"Are you going to divorce him?" I ask quietly, the fear caused by my thoughts had left me almost numb.

"God, don't even say that ugly word. I don't even want to think about that right now. All I want to do is cut his balls off and make him eat them. Hey, why were you so dolled up?" She'd just noticed my attire.

I had on another one of my pretty dresses matched with killer heels and lingerie underneath, which had all been meant for my husband. And he wouldn't even get to see it. I hesitated in answering, "it... today was our Anniversary, Logan and I. He didn't show up."

The messy floor suddenly became interesting. I could feel her staring at me, though.

"Sarah, don't end up like me—" Her voice went soft, filled with pity.

"End up like you? How would that work exactly? I'm not the one that followed a man around like a puppy that stares at a stranger's ass more than yours. That's you. And to top it off, you act surprised, we all knew Devin couldn't be faithful. You look pathetic." Pain was etched on her face, she brushed away the fallen tears.

I pushed away the guilt and held my head high. I'll be damned if I end up like that.

"Oh, sweet little Sarah Carter. Trophy wife, mother of... None. Shit I forgot, you're infertile. Maybe that's why Logan is cheating on you. Probably with that Yasmin, he's most likely fucking her on his desk right now. I'd bet she'd give him a nice, pretty baby. With her blue eyes!" She chuckles, verbally going for the jugular. I clenched my jaw to keep the tears at bay.

"You think you can be mean, Sarah? Hurts doesn't it? Go be a bitch somewhere else. Get the fuck out of my house and don't come the fuck back when you find out you're husband's been fucking the shit out of that—" As if my body had a mind of its own, I'd gotten up and slapped her. Her head snapped the the side and my hand stung, she turned to me slowly.

Through gritted teeth, she said, "You have 5 seconds to get the hell out of here before I call the police, you fucking bitch." She pushes me on the floor and I trip over my dress. "Five... Four..." I scramble to get up and walk out of the door just as she reaches one.

I don't dare run in these heels. As I reach the car, I hear her scream from her porch. "YOU JUST WAIT SARAH, FINALLY YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO SAY YOU'RE BETTER THAN EVERYONE! YOU'LL BE JUST LIKE THE REST OF US!" I close the door to the car and Robert drives me home.

I raise the tinted window between Robert and I before sobbing to myself. Whatever pain I'd pushed away released itself and I laid down on the seats, curled into a ball. What had I done to deserve this?
