Effy wanted me to come with her to go check out Freddie's shed- For some reason. So, we waited outside until Freddie came out.
"You're in my garden. Why?" he asked.
"We wanted to see your shed. Everyone says you have a marvelous shed," I said.
"Ok," he was hesitant, but he still let us in. We looked around, and the shed was pretty cool. I had to admit.
"What do you guys do in here all day? Braid each other's hair and play soggy biscuit?" Effy said.
"No, not for a while," Freddie said jokingly. I saw a stash of playboy magazines and unfolded one of them.
"Why don't you get your porn on the internet like normal people?" I said.
Effy lifted a bottle of some yellow-looking liquid, "What the fuck's this?"
"Well, uh. When we're too stoned to go outside, uh."
"That's disgusting," I scoffed as Effy dropped the bottle.
"I'm sorry."
Just then, Cook and JJ burst in. Cook was rambling on about some dude he beat up until JJ stopped him, and he realized that Effy and I were here as well.
"Welcome to our fortress of solitude!" JJ said, not gaining a reply.
After a while of chatting, JJ showed us one of his tricks, which ended badly.
"Water! Water!" he said, taking the bottle of piss that was on the floor.
"Oh god, JJ, don't," but it was too late.
He took a big sip of it and then somehow lit his breath on fire by lighting up a liter. Effy and I screamed, Freddie looked shocked, and Cook just laughed. That was definitely one of the biggest scares of my life.
"Well, after all that excitement, I fancy a spunk. You coming, Eff? You soon will be," he laughed.

"I'd sooner fuck JJ," she said.
"I know that wasn't intended as a compliment, but I'll take it," JJ said, making me roll my eyes.
"I don't think you got it. I said, you coming? You soon will be."
"I got it. Bri got it. Freddie and JJ got it. That termite over there got it. But you're not going to get it, got it?" Effy said.
"No, I'm confused."
"I'm not going anywhere near your Crayola dick. I know where it's been," Effy said.
JJ lowered his eyebrows, "What does she mean?"
"Piss off, then! This is our place, and if you're not gonna shag us, then get to fuck!"
I looked at Freddie and JJ, who put their heads down in defeat. As Effy was leaving, I decided to speak up.
"It is a shame that you two put up with his behavior. Who do you even think you are, Cook? Speaking to us like we're your fucking subordinates. You're nothing but a pathetic piece of shit!"
With that, I grabbed Effy's arm and walked out with her.
I was sitting near the harbor, drinking my dad's moonshine, and thinking about everything that had been going on lately. Effy. Cook. The shed incident. But my silence was broken when I heard footsteps coming up from behind me. Freddie.
"Hey, Freddie. What's up?" I said, "Moonshine?"
"Sure. I need it," he said, chugging it all down fastly.
"I don't think you drank that whole thing fast enough," I said sarcastically.
"I don't fucking get her, Bri! I love her, and I think she loves me back, but then she goes and fucks Cook. And then Cook fucks my sister! I don't even know when it happened, but I just found out today, and I'm fucking pissed," he said, breathing heavily. I patted him on the shoulder in an attempt to comfort him.

"Just give her some more time. She'll come around. God, I've been friends with her for six years, and sometimes I wonder if I even know her at all," I said, shaking my head.
"Same with Cook. God, he's such a twat," he sighed, "And you're right. I need to stop putting up with his shit. He's turning into his wanker of a father more and more every day."
I sighed and turned my head to face him. I don't know why I did it, but right then and there I turned his face around and kissed him on the lips. It was short and sweet.
"Why'd you do that?" he said.
"Dunno, I felt like kissing someone. And no offense, but kissing you felt like kissing Sid," I said, wiping my lips. It might've been the moonshine.
"Yea, that felt like I was kissing Karen," he said. We looked at each other and just burst into a fit of laughter.
"Let's be friends," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder.
"Yea, I'd like that," he said as he put his head on top of mine, and we looked at the water.

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse. Born in an arcology, she was assigned a job in the megacorporation that raised her almost as soon as she could work. Despite the stability of her corporate life, she wanted something more.
