《The Golden Girl》3. Designer of their own catastrophe

They are their own creators, creators of the torn self that they are today. They both themselves are the architects, the builders and the painters.

e stood up from the chair, held the tears that were threatening to spill and stormed out of the room. Her eyes instantly went to the flower vase that was on the floor, shattered into pieces.

The voices were getting louder by every second and fear was lurching in her mind. It was her mom and dad. They kept on shouting at each other, one throwing dirty remarks to the other. Apparently it came to know that Arthur Lockwood is cheating on his wife, Veronica, aka, Faye's mother.

But you know what's the funny thing here? Veronica had been waiting for this day since the moment she stepped in this palace like mansion, stepped in these halls. Their marriage was nothing, nothing but an agreement, an agreement for the benefit of the Lockwood industry. Faye's mother and father never actually witnessed the power of love, for them, it's one of those useless things that matters the least in their lives.

Now, Veronica can leave, leave cause the society knows about her husband's dirty handiworks.

"I need the papers as soon as possible." Faye heard her mother say.

They were parting their ways, not even thinking about their child. That's how it is now, no one cares, everyone's just too dedicated to themselves.

"Do you think I care? She will be in college the next year, we don't have to stick together just for her, she knows how to take care of herself and if not, she will have to learn." Arthur responded.

"She is the only living heir of our industry."

They aren't good parents but, but they are the best in business.

Her own parents outshine her. Her own parents think that she's nothing but burden.

"We should talk in my office. I don't want her to hear."

"About your dirty works?" Veronica scoffed.

Once, Faye had someone by her side, who witnessed these fights with her, once she had someone who genuinely cared about her, who loved her, once she had Sumner, Sumner Lockwood but... but just like the wind blows and the autumn comes and goes away, she walked away.

Yes, she has everything one can ever ask for, she has money, looks, a social life, descendants that devotes her, she has people that actually want to be like her, want to live her life but... but they doesn't know, even if to some extent, money satisfy our needs, it can't buy happiness.

There's not a single day in Lockwoods family when they spend their time with each other, together. They don't do their dinner together, they don't just sit around and talk how was their day, they don't even get to look at each other's face actually. There's not a single time when Faye spends her time with her parents.

Their lives are corrupted, it revolves around nothing but name and fame... not around love, hope and care.

"Its not like you're any better Veronica." And Faye watched as a sly smirk occupied her father's face.

They deserve each other.

Faye felt ashamed, ashamed upon her parents, her life. They were destroying each other.

Her glassy eyes finally left them and she turned around. That's when she saw everyone. The servants of the household. All of them were looking at her with pity, sympathy. She hated it when someone looked at her like that, like she's helpless, weak, pathetic.

She gave them a tight smile, a smile that none of them expected and slowly she walked towards the door, her escape. As soon as she exited from the mansion, she ran towards the driveway and jumped in her car.

And she let her tears fall.

"Why did you leave me, Sumner?" She cried, tears falling freely from her eyes, smudging her eye makeup. The queen was vanishing, the queen was turning into a common girl.

Faye felt defeated, she felt like she's alone, that nobody's by her side, no one.

These were the times when she missed her sister the most, when she missed the moments that they had spent together.

Her hands instantly went to her iPhone and she scrolled through her contacts. There were millions of numbers in her phone, numbers of people who will practically die to hangout with her right now. But she knew that they didn't actually care or like her, they just are concerned about popularity.

Her eyes stopped on a certain number and she hit the call button. The phone was picked up at the third time.

The chirpy voice boomed from the other line, "Oh my God Faye, we are definitely coming to the mall tomorrow. I saw this beautiful dress there, ugh, it was so amazing, I... I just want it..." Madeline kept on babbling for a while but then, then she noticed something.

Faye wasn't answering.

"Faye, Faye what happened?" She instantly knew something was wrong, she knew her too well.

Wiping her tears from the back of her hand, she asked, "Where are you?" Her voice was broken, they were shredded.

"I am coming over." Madeline declared. She was concerned about her best friend, cause she knew what she had been through, that life was never, never easy for Faye.

Faye was going to agree, she was just going to tell her to come over but then, then she heard voices.

'Maddy, let's play.' It was Madeline's brother.

'Honey, come here, Aunt Gaby is calling for you.'

Madeline was with her family.

"Firstly tell me where are you?" Faye said, taking a deep breath.

"I... I am in Aunt Gaby's. Actually, dad wanted to have a get together, so, the whole family is here. So, should I come over?" And Faye heard Madeline talking with her mother about coming to meet her.

"Noo, you shouldn't. I am not home." Faye shouted in her broken voice.

Yes, she lied.

"Then what happened to your voice?"

"Oh, that, I, I was just reading Romeo and Juliet. You know how much I love that book, right?" And then a nervous laugh.

Liar.

"Oh yah?" Maddy didn't believe.

"Of course. I just called cause am in the...in the, in the public library and well, I, I just wanted to ask if, you know, ah, you want a copy of Romeo and Juliet, yah, yah I was going to ask you that... so, do you want it?"

"You're in the library? But you have a whole room in your house dedicated to books. You even have Romeo and Juliet. Faye, seriously? What happened?" Madeline's voice was filled with suspicion.

She gulped and fidgeting with her fingers, she said, "I, ah... I just, ah, I lost the copy, yah, I lost the copy and remember? You had said that Rodger eat your one, so, I was just wondering..." Faye trailed.

"No, I had got a new copy last week. I even had told you about it."

"You had? Oh, I, it totally slipped out of my mind."

"Whatever you say Faye, whatever you say. I hope you will be ready to spill the truth tomorrow." And Madeline hanged up.

Damnit.

She knew that Faye was lying. She knew her too well.

Faye lied. She lied cause unlike her, Madeline had a family, a family that cares for her, love her. She didn't want to steal the family time, the time that Maddy was spending with her family.

She kept on scrolling through her contacts.

Aubree wasn't going to pickup, that was for sure, Zach was out of the town and Max? Max will be in the cafe, working.

So, she dialed Kyle's number. She wanted him to pick up, she wanted to be with him. And maybe, her call was answered.

"Girlfriend..." A faint blush appeared in both sides of her cheeks.

"Hey boyfriend." She said, the small smile visible in her lips.

"What's up?"

"Ah... nothing. I was just wondering if we can meet. Well, I have to tell you something which is rather important. I mean, if you're free then..." She trailed, biting the inside of her cheeks as she heard some sounds in the other side of the line.

"Hello? Are you still there?" She heard him saying.

"Yup."

"Faye, am in the town's museum with my cousins, right now. How about if I drop by yours after two or three hours?" He asked and her shoulders slumped.

"Alright, will meet you soon boyfriend." And after hearing him chuckle, she hung up.

Three hours.

It was a long time.

Hesitantly, she started the ignition, making her way towards the place where she didn't want to go.

************************************

Her hands trembled as she rang the doorbell and a sigh escaped from her lips as she ran a hand through her smudged face. She looked destroyed.

The big door of the mansion opened in a second and she found herself facing the housekeeper, Marlin.

"Oh my God Faye, what happened to you?" The old woman gasped and enveloped her into a hug. She still held it, never letting the tears fall. She felt tired, too tired.

"He's in the library." Marlin said with a sigh, knowing exactly that she's not going to get any elaboration from Faye.

Faye walked through the tiled floor like a robot, her face not reflecting a single emotion. Her mind regretted coming here but something said that it was okay, that it's alright to be with him.

Her body stopped in front of the green door and she, without any caution pushed it open.

Her mind was whirling around and she wanted nothing but a shoulder to cry on, a person who will understand.

Her eyes stared at the floor. The floor was carpeted with a dark blue.

Blue...

Dark blue, like a stormy sky.

A dark night.

And before she knew, she was falling and falling and falling. The funny thing? She never collapsed on the floor, she never touched the ground cause, cause he saved her. He saved her from her fall and wrapping her hand around his shoulder, he lead her through the stack of books, he made her sit in the white couch that matched beautifully with the blue of the floor.

And he let her cry, he let her mourn, he let her release her pain, he let her sob, he let her ruin his new white t-shirt, cause he knew she needed him, she needed him more than anything.

"Its okay Faye, it's going to be alright." He ran his fingers through her blonde hairs, he wiped her tears and soothed her back comfortably, letting her cry.

"I feel defeated River, I feel so defeated."

They hated each other cause they were too much alike, cause their faces reflected the truth of one another.

Yes, they were bloody destructive, destructive for others but somewhere, somewhere ointments for each other.
