The school I attended wasn't really that big on drama. There was the occasional fight every blue moon, the occasional 'did you hear about...?' in the hallways or in the caf. Gossip was there but people, especially the grade I was in, kept all our our drama lowkey. We even kept the parties that were thrown lowkey and the events that were happening lowkey.
Simply swept under the rug.
But when I was at lunch, simply doing some quick homework from my previous class with Amelia texting Hayden beside me, I didn't expect the rush of our group of friends coming towards us.
"Sandra, Sandra," My friend Monique eagerly grabbed my arm, making me drop my pencil. She had that glint in her eye like when she was about to tell another story of what she and her boyfriend had done the previous weekend. I was never really excited to hear about that.
"Yes?" I said, gently prying her fingers off me.
"Parking lot. Now." Robin said, grabbing Amelia and started to drag us out of the caf.
"What is happening?" Amelia asked, shoving her phone in her pocket and looking annoyed as we quickly made our way towards the exit of the school.
My eyes widened at the huge crowd at the door and Monique and Robin pulled us both through. I saw a familiar tall frame, reaching out towards them. My hand curled on Cam's bicep. "What is happening?"
He shrugged. "I'm about as confused as you. I just saw the huge crowd."
Amelia asked Monique and Robin the question we were all confused about. "What's happening?"
"Promposal." Robin said with a huge smile.
Of course. Promposals at our school had started about two weeks ago and with prom getting closer and closer, there was no doubt that many people were getting dates. My heart beat fast at the thought of Kevin who I haven't seen all day. He had texted me to meet him after school in the gym but I pushed that aside when I was hit with realization.
He hasn't asked me to prom in a long time.
Like a really long time.
What if he didn't want to go with me anymore?
Why wouldn't he want to go with you? He said he liked you. He would have kissed you. Why else would he not want to go with you? But then again he hasn't really asked?
Shit.
I was going to say yes the next time he asked obviously I wasn't stupid but when would he? The anticipation and the thought of it was killing me as I stood there with my friends and the crowd started to get bigger as more people came to observe what was happening outside.
But what about Alivia? Alivia lives in a whole different place there probably isn't anything with Alivia and Kevin anyway. He loved her, didn't he? He probably still does and I could just be his distraction.
Shit, I thought to myself for the second time. I needed to stop with all the dumb doubts.
"Hey, Sandra?"
Monique's curious tone made me break out of my thoughts, focusing on her. "Yeah?"
"You and Kevin aren't dating right?"
Where was this coming from? "Um, no we never were, why?"
Monique didn't have to answer because by the time we had broken to the front of the crowd I could see what was starting to happen and the amount of people who took out their phones to record. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a group of boys come out dragging along...Kevin.

The senior boys basketball team members dragged Kevin and he was laughing, a blindfold covering his eyes. "Guys, what the hell?" He laughed loudly. "What's going on?"
One of the boys took the blindfold off and Kevin's eyes squinted as he adjusted to the sunlight. He turned to his teammates confused. "You idiots took me to the parking lot? Seriously? What the-"
"Turn around bro." Someone said.
Kevin turned around, a puzzled expression on his face as everyone waited.
"What is going on?" I jumped, hearing Hayden's voice behind me.
Amelia ran a hand over her face, clearly having my same reaction. "You scared me."
He grinned, putting an arm around her. "Sorry, but why's everyone out here?"
"Because I think Kevin is about to get asked to prom." Cam answered but he looked a lot more focused on Hayden and Amelia's position, confusion riddled all over his face.
"What-"
The sound of someone honking a car cut Hayden's question off as an Audi drove into the parking lot. The thing was that it wasn't just the car, there were huge balloon letters attached to the back of the car that spelled out 'P R O M'. When that car skidded to a stop in front of Kevin, who's lips were parted in shock.
I watched as three girls, girls who were in a variety of my classes over the years come out of the car and hand Kevin sets of flowers. Kevin accepted each set of roses, a confused smile plastered on his face.
That's when Allison Tinto came out of the car a sign in her hand. My heart pounded loudly in my chest as I watched the scene in front of me envelop. Holy shit.
The sign held two boxes and on top of one it said yes and the other it said no. One of the girls gave Kevin a marker and his teammates took the flowers away from him. Allison gave him a pretty smile, holding the sign in front of her as she said. "Kevin, will you go to prom with me?"
I watched Kevin's eyes go from the car to the roses, to the marker in his hands and than back to Allison. In the heat of the moment, my other hand that wasn't on Cam's bicep went to Amelia's arm. I don't know if I was holding on pretty hard to either her or Cam but they didn't show it.
What I did see though was the smile on Kevin's face get wider as he stepped forward and check marked one of the boxes. His friends behind him let out huge cheers along with the rest of the crowd as the sign showed that he checked off yes.
I didn't bother seeing Allison's reaction or anyone else's. I turned on my heels, pushing through the crowd and out of there as fast as I could have.
"I'm not talking about it. I said I wasn't going to talk about it yesterday, I am not going to talk about it today. Please and thank you." I said, trying to make my way out of the school.
Cam, Amelia, hell even Hayden tried to get me to talk about it. But not just talk about it but talk to Kevin. I didn't want to. Kevin even tried to text me multiple times but I ignored all of them without reading. Why? Because he was the problem:
I like Kevin. A lot. And he's going to prom with someone else.
That's it. There is the facts now we can all move on.

I suppressed myself at that moment.
I don't care, I tried to tell myself.
And failed.
What was funny right now was that it was like Cam and Amelia had put aside their awkwardness- maybe they talked or something I don't know- and actually tried to make sure I was okay.
Cam spoke up. "But S-"
"But nothing. I have a test to study for-"
"You're already prepared for that test." Amelia reminded me.
"It doesn't matter." I turned around to walk but I bumped into a tall wall. Hayden the tall wall. I huffed, taking a step back. "Dude."
"He's in the gym. Just talk to him."
"I have no reason to talk to him."
Hayden put his hands on my shoulders, staring me right in the eye. "Talk to him. He needs to speak to you."
"I don't care Hayden," I said, feeling my emotions get turned into slight anger. "He said yes to her. I get it. He doesn't like me he probably never did. I'm okay with that. Now can I go?"
Hayden stared at me for a second before his eyes flickered over to Cam. "Grab her."
What?
I didn't even know what was happening until I felt Cam's hands on my upper body and Hayden hoist my feet up. "Let me down." They started bringing me over to the gym and I tried kicking my way out of Hayden's grip for him to let go of my feet but he held on, turning his head to look behind him to make sure he didn't trip.
"Let go of me." I yelled and eyes went towards us as students were leaving the building. Amelia walked along, rushing ahead to open the door to the gym so Cam and Hayden could pull me through. Hayden let go of me and Cam all but shoved me inside, all of them closing the door quickly.
Idiots.
I heard the sound of a basketball going through the net and bouncing against the floor of the gymnasium. Oh my goodness. I took a deep breath before I turned around to look at Kevin.
He had gone to go after the ball, holding it in his hands as he warily watched me. He held one hand out towards me, taking a step in my direction. "S-"
"No," I started and my feet took me towards him, my emotions overwhelmed. "No, no, no, no. Don't start with the S. I can't believe you."
Kevin moved to meet me in the center, stopping me in my tracks. A part of me tried to ignore the way he looked nervous. He was restless, wiping his hands on his shorts, glancing at me as if I were about to snap at him. He looked like a puppy. Which sucked because I was about to snap at him. "Sandra-"
"No," I held a hand up. "I'm talking. Grade nine? I liked you. I was fourteen and you were the only person I really connected with at the time. I don't know why or how but yeah I fell for you, you idiot. And then a couple months you come back in my life out of nowhere."
"S-"
"And suddenly you randomly text me that you actually want to go to prom together? I don't get it!"
"S-" he tried interrupting me again, his hands on my arms.
"You told me this wasn't a game but it feels like it Kevin. And then I find out-no, I witness that you're actually going to prom with someone else?"
"Sandra, listen to me-"
"No. I can't believe you and after months of asking me over and over again, I managed to fall for you and actually like you.I like you, a lot. I want to go with you Kevin but you know what? It's fine. I've been leading you on and no wonder you said yes to her. It's my fault anyway."
I was prepared to walk right out of that gym but Kevin stopped me, dropping the ball and putting a hand on my arm. "Sandra, I'm not going to prom with anyone else."
"What?"
"I said yes in public because I didn't want to reject her in front of everyone. That would suck and I didn't want to cause that. So we talked after and I told her that I was sorry but that I wanted to go with someone else. With you."
There was a pause and my eyes went wide. "You-you did?"
"Of course I did," He exhaled, a smile appearing on his face. "When I said I only wanted to go with you I meant it."
"You did?"I repeated.
"I did. I meant it. That's one of the reasons why I asked you to meet me here yesterday." He picked up the ball before walking back to me.
"What-what are you talking about?"
"Well, I'm a ball player S. I'm required to take a lot of shots. So I'm willing to wager on something." He walked to the other side of the court, turning on his heels.
"What?" He was on one side of the court and he wanted to make the shot into the net all the way from there?
That fraction of a Kevin smile appeared on his face. That smile I endeared more than anything. "If I get it in from here, will you go to prom with me?"
I glanced at the distance from where he was to the net. Shit, that was far. "Are you sure?"
"Sure about prom or about the shot?"
"The shot."
"I'm sure babe," He grinned, taking a couple steps back. "You know what they say?"
"What do they say?" I asked.
"Shoot your shot."I watched him take a couple of running steps before he took the shot, his right foot touching the half court line as he released the ball into the air.
I felt my heart leap into my throat as I watched the ball fly through the air. Cut through the air. Chase after it's own speed. Until it went through the net with the nice sounding swish.
My excitement- that was going to be there whether or not he made the shot, made me let out a scream of glee as I ran over to him. Kevin laughed, grasping me into a hug and raising me off my feet. I heard a yell of 'YES' break through the room. I turned my head to see Hayden, Amelia and Cam smiling. Hayden pointed at Kevin. "That's all you Kev. I got every second." He tapped to his phone.
I laughed, still in shock. "You really did that."
He ran a hand through his hair, looking down at me. "So?"
"Yeah?"
"Want to go to the prom with me? And I'm not asking over text. I'm not trying to do anything else, I just want to be with you."
"I'd love to go to prom with you," I grinned before adding. "And be your girlfriend."
Kevin pulled on a frown. "Who said anything about a girlfriend?"
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Excuse you-"
"I'm kidding." He grinned, hugging me again and lifting me off the ground.
"Kiss!" I heard Amelia yell.
"And not on the cheek," Hayden said. "We don't want that nonsense."
I covered my hands with my face from our friends before looking back at Kevin and grabbed his hand. "Not here. Not at school."
He didn't seem disappointed, he just looked at me curiously, his smile not falling off his face. But then again, neither was the smile on mine. "Where then?"
