《Chase》24

I leaned my head back on the fence, watching Kevin dribble the ball between his legs smoothly before taking a quick step back and releasing the ball from his grasp. I watched the ball hit off the rim once before entering the metal of the hoop. The ball bounced in my direction and I walked forward to retrieve it.
I bounce passed him the ball and he caught it smoothly, his eyes on my me as he dribbled slowly towards me. "When did you realize?"
"Realize what?" I questioned.
"That you liked me."
I thought about it for a second as he pulled me down to sit next to him against the fence. My hands felt the pavement of the outdoor basketball court, the bright spring sun hitting our faces. "When we talked outside my house. That night you thought I was angry at you and you ran over to my house."
"Your porch?"
"Yeah," I repeated, pulling him to sit on the steps next to me. "Where we talked, outside of school. I realized how much I really liked talking to you and I liked you but I didn't really want to acknowledge it."
A smirk came onto his face. "Oh so you liked talking to me?"
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Did you get more annoying by the second or did you just get more annoying because we're dating now?"
He grinned. "Both." I leaned my head on his shoulder and he took a deep breath, putting the basketball under his raised legs. "When you dated Danny, Hillary asked me out after and I went with it to get over you."
"Hmm?" My head shot off his shoulder. Sure, we were like fifteen when that happened but this was news to me.
"I did end up liking her."
"Why'd you break up?"
"This may make me seem like a dick but it got boring," He admitted. "I told her. She agreed. We still talk and stuff but it's not a friendship we're like acquaintances."
There was a brief moment of silence, my eyes finding the pavement very interesting. I turned my head to look him in his eyes. "And Alivia?"
"Alivia," The way he said her name made me move my gaze from his eyes back to the pavement. He put his hand on my face, making me look back at him.
A hint of amusement covered his face before he looked at me, realization filling his face. "You aren't jealous of her, are you?"
I made a face, hating that I had to admit this out loud to the one person I never wanted to. "Kind of."
Kevin put his hand on top of mine. "S, there's nothing there anymore. We're just friends."
"Really?"
"Yeah, and she has a boyfriend too. Alivia was the first girl I believed I really loved. Even though we only broke up because she moved away, love changes. I don't love her like that anymore."
He looked at me intently, running a hand through his hair. His eyes held all the assurance I needed. "Okay."
"And I like you. I liked you back then. I like you now. In that way."
"Kevin I know it. I've known it since you've admitted it to me drunk out of your mind."

He groaned, putting his hands on his face. "That night was wow but when I couldn't sleep it was the worst following days ever. I don't want to experience that ever again."
"Aw, I liked drunk Kevin. He was cute."
He grinned at me. "I hear drunk Sandra is the life of the party."
I rolled my eyes. "No, no, no you're never going to see her."
"C'mon. Ames told me you turn into a whole other person. She had vids, showed me evidence."
"I hate you both so much."
Kevin laughed. "Hate? Look from me asking you to prom over text, hopefully hoping that you still had my number, bugging you, annoyingly showing my affection, it was all me chasing you. But the end of the chase-"
"You mean where I finally said yes to prom."
"Shhhhhh," Kevin put a finger over my lips and I swatted it away. "I'm trying to be poetic and tell you why I you can't hate me."
"I already like you. Try less now."
He laughed. "The end of the chase is all worth it."
I stared at him for a second. "You're so CORNY."
"I'm not!"
"Holy shit, you are. You're actually so sappy."
"I'm not!" He repeated and I laughed.
"Don't worry. You're cute."
"I knew you thought I was cute." He made a face. "By the way, it was Hayden that thought of the whole chase thing."
"What do you mean?"
"I was talking to Hayden about prom one day. Actually, I was with the old team around that time from last year and stuff, yeah? And there were all trying to set me up with other girls and it was like even though we haven't talked in so long your face was the only one that popped in my head-"
"You're so corny!" I laughed and he matched it with a grin.
"Yeah, yeah we established that," He extended his hand, his fingered grazing against my neck until he cupped my cheek. "But I had to try to ask you. But then it was like, 'how the hell am I going to talk to you'? Then I remembered the first time we met-"
"Grade nine. Geography class," I remembered. "You were throwing paper balls at Hayden to get his attention and then you hit me with one of them then I turned around and you-"
"Winked. I winked. Pretty iconic right?"
"No, I found you pretty stupid and threw the paper ball right back at your face. And you made the funniest expression that everyone in the class laughed and we started talking."
"Good times." Kevin let out a dramatic sigh then grinned. "But yeah, I winked at you the same way I winked at you when I saw you in the hallway with Cam then texted you."
I glanced down at the ground, feeling the heat of the spring sun against my back. "You want to know something?"
"What?"
"Your winks did not get any better. It always looks like your eye is twitching." I lied.
Kevin tilted my head up with his hands. "Say that to my face, liar."
I put my own hands on his face, my thumbs touching his lips. "You have to send your skin routine. I'm beginning to think you don't get any pimples."

He pursed his lips. "Don't change the topic."
"At least answer the question." I insisted.
Levin frowned. "Sandra."
"Kevin."
He smiled when I said his name, pulling me closer to him. "Can I ask you a question?"
Why would you ask me if you could ask me a question when you're staring at me like that and making my heart race like that and making me not focus on anything else- "Uh, yeah?"
"Can I kiss you?"
"Wow, you're really asking?" I questioned sarcastically.
"It's the gentlemen-no it's the expected thing to do. You knew I was going to-you ruined the moment."
"Shut up." I pulled him close to me, pressing my lips against his.
When our lips touched and my eyes fell shut, he took the basketball that was under him throwing it away. I could hear the sound of it bouncing on the court with no one to get it. He smiled into the kiss, the happiness radiating off him. He lifted me up onto his lap, one hand buried in my hair, the other on my face as we kissed slowly, merely embracing the moment I've-we've been waiting for since that night at Amelia's part.
And it was worth it. My hand that was on his neck, moved over to his chest, feeling his heart rapidly beat as fast as mine. I couldn't help but smile, our lips moving in sync, the heat his skin followed wherever I touched and I embellished in the feeling of him, only him.
And when we pulled apart, I immediately put my hands on my face, feeling flushed as ever from what just happened and breathing hard I'm close to gasping for it.
Kevin dropped his head on my shoulder, turning his head to press a kiss to my neck. "Do I have permission to be corny again? Because that felt like it was literally breathtaking."
I laughed, pulling his head up so I could kiss him lightly on the lips, my cheeks starting to hurt from the constant smiling. We sit there for a few minutes staring at each other in silence before Kevin speaks again. "I have another question."
"What is it?"
"Mom?" Kevin asks as we walk into the house. He takes off his shoes and I follow suit. If Kevin's mom wasn't a doctor I was pretty sure she could've been an interior designer because the inside of the house was wow. And If I had walked down the street, I would've noticed which house Kevin lived in in a second. Of course he'd have the basketball hoop on the driveway.
"You're home and you're late." I heard a voice say.
"I know, but I have a good reason." Just when Kevin's mom walks in, Kevin practically shoves me forward and I take a second to glare at him before turning back to his mom.
"This is Sandra. S for short if you want."
"Hi." I said when she smiled at me. Kevin and his mom bore the most striking resemblance especially in their height. She was tall and I felt as if I was vertically challenged near the both of them.
Kevin must've noticed as well because he laughed behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders. "Hi S," She said, her eyes slightly narrowing with amusement at me being in her home. "I'm just going to ask, I can already guess but who are you to Kevin."
"Hi, Ms. Reed. I'm his girlfriend." I said out loud, trying to bite back to the smile on my face.
"See? you hear that? Girlfriend," Kevin drawled stepping towards his mom to kiss her on the cheek before disappearing into what I assumed was the kitchen. "See? I wasn't lying."
"I didn't think you were lying, hun."
"Yeah you did," Kevin yelled then he poked his head out the room, looking at me. "I texted her and she said 'There's no way. You're lying.' She even insulted me S, she asked why you would ever go out with me." I laughed. "I don't know if you noticed but Hayden and my mom have similar sense of humor when it comes to me and my well-being." He pouted before going back to the room.
"It was a joke." His mom said before giving me a smile. "He's so dramatic."
"No I'm not!" Kevin said.
"Yeah he is." I agreed.
"Well come on. You're not going to stand there all day," We walked in the living room and when I sat down on the couch, she continued. "I've been dying to finally meet the S Kevin keeps going on about. He doesn't go a day without talking about you."
"You're making me sound obsessed." Kevin said, entering the room and tossing me a bottle of iced tea and sitting next to me.
"You told your own mother about her. Honey, you are."
Kevin sighed, looking at me. "You see what I have to deal with?"
"You're not easy to handle either."
Kevin smiled, looking at the clock. "I got home in time. See? We can watch it."
"Watch what?" I asked.
"The latest episode of Grey's Anatomy recorded." Ms. Reed said.
"You watch Grey's?" My eyes widened at this new information.
"We watch it around this time every Tuesday." His mom added and I grinned.
"Yeah, see I wanted her to know that when we hit one month of this relationship. Thanks." He said sarcastically.
"Well, I haven't watched last week episode either so shush." I tell him as his mom turned the TV on. The frown on Kevin's face turns into a smile when his mom asks me who I miss and who I love on the show. And I knew that this was what he wanted. To see his mom get along with me. It was clear how much he loved her too and I found that endearing. It was in their conversation when she joked around with him and even asked him about school and he knew everything that happened in her workplace.
And I liked her. Especially when she said, "Kevin, you didn't even ask her if she wanted to stay for dinner. If anyone asks I didn't raise you."
Kevin jaw dropped before he turned to look at me. "And she calls me a piece of work."
"You are." Se said, kissing the top of his head, passing by to go to the kitchen.
Kevin turned to me. "I'm your piece of work too."
I kissed him before getting up to help his mom in the kitchen, beaming. "Unfortunately."

Witchbone: The Goblins Winter
Themes found in these stories include friendship, found family, defying negative expectations, trying to figure out how to be a force for good in your corner of the world, doing heroic things even if you don't look or feel like a hero, and that being different isn't necessarily fatal. Summary: A spell of arctic weather. A mysterious death. The reading of a will. Strange tracks in the snow. Eleven-year-old Danny Hallow accepts his life, such as it is. His father is dead, his mother left years ago. His three Keepers are the only people aware of Danny's erratic and not-very-impressive psychic abilities. He has no friends, he's been suspended from school, and he's responsible for the life of a small brown bat that's ended up in his care. When Danny's estranged Uncle Enoch dies under mysterious circumstances, he and his Keepers are called to the town of Eddystone, New Hampshire for the reading of the man's will. Traveling four hundred miles from his dreaded hometown to attend, Danny is happy to get away, possibly inherit something interesting- and maybe find out more about his family while he's there. Arriving at the crumbling family estate of Gnomewood Home, he finds it to be hauntingly familiar, a bit creepy, oddly comforting, and possibly alive. When his uncle's will reveals that he's inherited Gnomewood and everything in it, he's determined to stay and make a happier life for himself in Eddystone, somehow. But at Gnomewood, he finds more questions than answers to his family's secrets. Disturbing old memories come to him in dreams. His psychic abilities begin to grow stronger, and as a result he becomes aware that a horde of cryptic creatures are plaguing the town of Eddystone, seemingly drawn out by the spell of an unusually frigid February. Toothy little goblins that are sneaky, vicious, and hungry. Goblins that take a particular interest in Danny. Will the emergence of the alien, and potentially dangerous, power he's inherited from his peculiar family tree help Danny survive the goblin infested winter, inadvisable attempts to befriend a terrifying boy with silver eyes, and a new school? Only if he learns to control them before they put him and everyone around him in danger. Before they convince some people that he should never have been allowed to exist at all. Before he becomes just another twisted tale in his family's bizarre history, kept hidden for centuries within the ivy-covered walls of Gnomewood Home.
