《Broken [FINISHED]》And Then There Were None

'Lin!' Vanessa ran into Lin's office, 'Lin Lin Lin look what I found!'

It was exactly one week after Denise's date with Nick, and Vanessa and Lin were both working at home. Denise was at school. Lin looked up: 'This better be really important, I'm writing.'

'It is really important! Look!'

Lin had never seen Vanessa so excited before, except when she had bought the math clock for Sebastian's room. He took the paper and read:

"Cast of the Sound of Music: Revival complete"

'Wait,' he said, 'Are they going to revive the Sound of Music?'

'Look at the date,' Vanessa said, rolling her eyes.

10 March 2010. Oh. 'Why do you give me a news article from 2010?' Lin asked.

'Just read it!' Vanessa said.

"The Sound of Music is coming back to Broadway. The adult cast was already announced a while ago, but the real stars of the show, the children, were still unknown. That changes today! Because the children also need to go to school, there are three groups of seven children who share the roles. You can find the list with names down below. The Sound of Music will premier at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on November 1st."

Lin looked up: 'I still don't see why you showed this to me.'

'Martha, group one,' Vanessa said impatiently.

Lin's eyes scrolled down the list of names, until he found what he was looking for.

Denisabella Harris

He looked up: 'But that's Denise!'

'I know!' Vanessa said, 'Everything makes so much more sense now!'

'But it opens up so much more questions,' Lin said, 'Why did she never tell us? Why does she claim to hate musical theatre? Why didn't she want to watch the Sound of Music with us?'

'Do you know when her parents died?' Vanessa asked.

Lin shook his head.

'November first, 2010!' Vanessa exclaimed.

Lin started to understand it: 'That's opening night!'

'I looked up her Broadway credits on Playbill.com!' Vanessa said, 'Apparently the Sound of Music was her only show. She played some previews but had to leave before opening night, "due to home problems".'

'Aka her parents' death!' Lin said, 'Of course they won't put that on a site like Playbill! The kid needs her privacy!'

Vanessa looked at him: 'Exactly my thought.'

'We need to talk to Denise,' Lin said.

Vanessa nodded.

After school, Denise walked into the living room.

'Denise, we need to talk,' Vanessa said. Denise immediately sensed that something was wrong. She stopped.

I thought they were going to keep me.

'Come here sweetheart,' Lin said, 'We only want to ask you some questions.'

What on earth do they want to ask me? Denise wondered.

'Sit down and relax,' Lin said, 'We were just wondering what your life was like before your parents died.'

Denise's eyes turned cold: 'Why do you want to know that?'

'We're just curious,' Vanessa said, 'And we want to get to know you better.'

Denise shrugged: 'I was quite the regular kid. Wanted to be a princess when I was five. Started to love reading books when I was eight. Finished the Harry Potters when I was nine. Loved - and still love - Roald Dahl's books. I wasn't really popular but I did have friends. Outside of school I did turning.'

'Denise,' Vanessa sighed, 'Why don't you just tell the truth.'

Denise froze to her seat. They know. She stared to the ground. What on earth do I tell them?

'I did tell the truth,' she said, 'just not everything.' She looked up: 'What exactly do you know?'

'You were in the Sound of Music revival on Broadway,' Lin stated.

Denise nodded: 'I was Martha. It was opening night, my parents were driving me to the theatre, when another car showed up and crashed into ours. They immediately died, while I only had a cut in my arm.' Denise said this all very quickly. As if it had been locked inside her for too long, and needed to get out. And maybe that was exactly what was happening. After that, Denise stared at the wall for at least a minute. No one said something, until Denise whispered: 'It's all my fault,' and started crying.

Vanessa pulled Denise in her arms. She let Denise cry in her chest while she softly stroke her hair.

'What is your fault?' Lin asked, putting a hand on Denise's shoulder.

'If it wasn't for me and my obsessive love of musical theatre they wouldn't have died!'

'Denise!' Vanessa said shocked, 'It's not your fault! The only one you can blame is that drunk man who hit you!'

Denise nodded, but she was not convinced.

Vanessa and Lin shared a look. There was a lot more to this girl than they had first thought.

'Why didn't you tell us?' Lin asked.

'In the group home you get a lot. You get food, a bed, clothes and an education. But you don't get love or lots of attention. No difference in most foster homes. The only way to survive that is to forget your previous life. I taught myself not to think of anything that has to do with my life before they died. That's why I completely banned musical theatre from my mind. But now... I'm constantly reminded of my past. It confuses me. That's one of the reasons I ran away.'

'One of the reasons?' Lin asked.

Denise looked down. She didn't want to tell them what she heard. She had probably just misheard it. But she also didn't want to lie. 'I thought you didn't want me,' she eventually said.

Lin hugged her: 'Of course we want you!'

Denise looked at him. She hadn't expected him to say that. Vanessa, sure, but Lin? 'Really?' she asked, sounding more insecure than she wanted to.

Lin nodded, and hugged Denise.

Just at that moment Sebastian crawled into the room.

'Me hug too!' He screamed.
