《Whodunnit ?》Chapter 10 - The 'Killer' Bite

After discussion continued for a few moments longer, Natalie excused herself to go to the toilet.
Nelson and the others thought nothing of it. Until Nelson realized Natalie was peering trough the parlor curtain. Trying to get his attention.
Nelson excused himself easily from the group and disappeared out of the parlor.
"Tell me what you found." Natalie pleaded to Nelson, now in the great room with him.
"There was a second cage, and it had a snake in it."
Natalie gasped in shock, knowing how the two bites on Courtney's ankle now made sense,
"What did it look like?" Natalie asks knowing that the more information she knew, the better since a single detail missed could result in a scared card.
Nelson thinks back to when he saw the snake in the cage. "It had a pattern of red and black on it."
"Ok, that's really useful thank you." Natalie smiled before getting onto the serious stuff.
"So are you with us now or what?" The Social Media Marketer got straight to the point. She felt that it'd be pretty stupid if Nelson did nothing for herself and her group as she was the one to really find the crucial information at Courtney's crime scene.
Nelson let out a heavy sigh, placing his hands on the back of his head. "It's a hard decision. You have to understand that. The majority has my back but-"
"Did you not see Michelle in the dining room? She was giving you so many dirty looks as you were walking around the crime scene on your own." Natalie lied.
"Really?" Nelson furrowed his eyebrows, confused. He thought Michelle was one of his closest allies on the majority alliance.
"Listen. What I can tell you is that if you come over to our side there is no top or bottom of the totem poll. Whereas for the majority it's clear who is at the top and on the bottom. And I promise you they will regard you to be on the bottom. They'll turn on the bottom once my alliance is gone." Natalie hoped that she argued her point enough to get another number on her crippling team.
Nelson looked back at his team through the curtain "I'm gonna see what happens today and I'll decide."
Natalie sigh "Okay then."
-
After lunch, the guests were all guided back into the parlor for the riddle.
"I assume there's no need to explain that the killer has left a riddle." Giles held up the allusive note sealed in the Rue Manor envelope.
"Scatter back to where we all started
When you each seemed so seemingly wholehearted
Follow the clues provided, not leaving one clue unturned
Otherwise, you might just be the next one adjourned"
The guests all scattered in a confused dash.
"That was a short clue." Dan observed as he and his group of Jamie and Natalie ran over to the dining room. assuming that's where the crime really started.
Once at the dining room, the small alliance started to frantically search the area. Hoping that the next clue would be in there. "Natalie, check that curtain again," Jamie ordered, suddenly remembering about the curtain which supplied a lot of information for the alliance just this morning.
"Of course!" Natalie puffed after disappearing behind the curtain.
"Whats wrong?" Dan asked.
"It's gone." Natalie rubbed her chin, reappearing from behind the curtain.
"Well, shit." Jamie cursed out loud, knowing that the only clues in the room were now missing. This clue was harder than they all originally thought.

The majority alliance, unbeknown to them were only next door in the kitchen. Thinking that the game typically started when the answer to the first riddle was found in the kitchen.
"When you two were in here you said you found no clues?"Michelle asked Alec & Talia.
"No." Both Talia & Alec replied swiftly.
"Then there must be a clue in here now then surely ?" Reynold questioned the group.
Almost everyone shrugged their shoulders, thinking deep and hard about where the game started.
"Justin was killed in the great room," Greg commented.
"Yes! Brilliant idea. Let's get there before the others do." Briana leads the group out of the kitchen and back into the hallway which leads to the great room.
-
Meanwhile. Jamie, Dan & Natalie were still looking deep in the dining room.
"Stop guys." Jamie suddenly stops his group. Natalie & Dan both turned to him.
"We're making the same mistake again. Remember last time? All we did was search predominately in one section of the mansion and we lost. We need to either split up or start looking in another room. "
"I agree" Dan certainly thought that Jamie's plan made a lot more sense than just searching in one area for the whole time.
"I'm still trying to wrap my head around where the game started, though." Natalie scratched her head at the riddles clue, there were so many possible places in the mansion.
After a few moments of silence, Dan clicked his fingers together. "The limos !. We all arrived in separate limos."
Natalie & Jamie nodded along. "That defiantly seems logical."
The alliance of three quickly scuffled out of the dining room and quickly turned into the great room, which the majority alliance was ransacking looking for clues. Since the glass front door was see through. The minority alliance could see a single black limo parked outside.
"We're just gonna have to walk by," Jamie commented as he strolled past the others.
Ignoring the dirty looks from most of the others, the three eventually made it outside and jogged to the limo. Dan ripped open the back door almost too excitedly and gasped when he saw ten envelopes laid neatly on top of the stereo system of the limo.
Dan ripped open his clue first.
"Only one of you can find me, I am a prize
If you don't want to be one of the scared three, I suggest you use me wise.
I only find sunlight artificially
You could potentially get stuck initially,
But once you find me, you'll know how the murder panned out officially"
"How come only one of us can find it ?" Jamie looked at the clue suspiciously.
Natalie shrugged, "Maybe the clue is only open to one of us ?"
"But why thoug-" Before Dan could finish his question. Alec's voice came ringing from inside. "Hey! The clues are in the limo. Come on everyone."
"Fuck sake. We actually had an advantage there and now we've lost it." Jamie sighed before taking off to the long way to the garden (without going through the house).
-
"Only one of you can find me, I am a prize
If you don't want to be one of the scared three, I suggest you use me wise.
I only find sunlight artificially
You could potentially get stuck initially,
But once you find me, you'll know how the murder panned out officially"
Reynold squinted at the clue. "Is there any like sun covers around the manor?" The doctor thought it was only efficient to list off some possibilities.

"But that still gets natural sunlight, though. We need to find something which is artificial." The charity worker, Nelson. Reminded the doctor.
"Suntanning booths?" Brianna suggested.
"There's suntanning booths here?" Greg questioned the twenty-four-year-old.
"Yeah! I saw them in the spa the day we got here." Brianna reminded the guests about the exclusive spa which was slightly hidden upstairs.
"That seems like a good place to try out." Reynold took off back into the manor. While the rest of his group were close behind him.
-
After no more than a couple of minutes, the majority alliance made it into the spa (which they hadn't really even had time to experience since being at the manor.)
"This place is amazing!" Talia gushed as she walked over to the small hot tub located in the center of the room.
"We have no time to admire it right now. We need to find the clues." Michelle reminded Talia that the alliance was under pressure, as they had no idea where the other alliance was. And if they could possibly be close to completing the riddle.
"Ok let's get searching. We need to win this riddle." Nelson started first by looking at the sun tanner's, but there were no clues whatsoever. Nelson kicked the sun tanners in frustration.
Alec had no luck either while he was searching the cupboards of the spa. Greg & Brianna even searched the hot tub as well, but there was no luck. The alliance from there on started to worry.
-
Meanwhile, the alliance of Dan, Jamie & Natalie aimlessly walked around the manor, searching each area which they thought would have any sort of artificial light. Dan even checked the iron maiden in the great room but there was no luck.
The group was now on the first floor of the manor, walking past each of the guest's assigned bedrooms. The group took their time to think of each Rue Manor location, and if any of them had an indication of artificial sunlight.
"Surely the riddle can't be this hard ?." Jamie speculated to his group.
"I'd guess they are going to get harder each time." Natalie shrugged her shoulders.
"Yeah." Dan agreed with his alliance member.
Suddenly a thought crossed the footballer's mind. He knew that most houses had these things, but would Rue Manor have one?
"A basement!" With that, the footballer took off up the stairs from the great room. Assuming that the basement was upstairs (like in most households).
"Genius!" Jamie agreed with the football player and took off behind him. Natalie followed close behind.
Eventually (after a few wrong doors later) the group arrived at the third floor, where one single door was its only inhabitant.
"So who wants to go up there?" Natalie pulled out the last clue out of her pocket, remembering how it said only one person could find the certain area.
"I think that we could all try and go at on-" Before Jamie could finish his suggestion the familiar voices of the remaining guests were heard. The crippling alliance knew that if the other alliance got the clue this time it'd be the end for them for sure, so Dan did something about it. Without warning the footballer took off up the stairs and shut the door behind him. That triggered for the Rue Manor bell to go off, symbolizing the end of the investigation.
"Oh my gosh!" Jamie excitedly hopped around the room. "We finally found the clues."
"We have everything," Natalie stated. "There is no way that they can win this riddle."
-
As Dan walked into the basement, he noticed that the overall room was very poorly lit. The only thing the twenty-five-year-old could really see was a small tv, placed on top of a coffee table. Taking a seat, the footballer tried playing around with the TV before it violently sparred awake.
Dan squinted his eyes to adjust to the blurry image on the TV. It took him a few seconds to realise it was one of the CCTV cameras in the kitchen of the manor. At first, nothing seemed out of place, he noticed that it was pitch black outside, however. Which confused him. Suddenly it all became clear. A hooded figure, with a gun in hand, approached one of the kitchen counters and pulled out a note from the jacket pocket, scribbling something on it with a pen.
"That explains the note Jamie found." Dan thought to himself as he focused on the rest of the footage.
He furrowed his eyebrows as he saw the killer open one of the draws underneath the same kitchen countertop. And without a struggle, crawl in. The footage suddenly changed to the next morning. (7:36 AM to be specific) where Courtney leisurely strolled into the kitchen, she started by raiding the chests above the kitchen countertop, looking for breakfast. Until the note obviously planted by the killer caught her attention. After reading it, the lawyer took off into the dining room. With that, the footage cut to the CCTV camera of the dining room. Courtney took a seat, the TV then flickered once again to another camera of the dining room (which gave an angle from the dining room door's perspective). It was here that Dan noticed a snake crawl out of a cage planted behind the curtain. As it slithered closer to Courtney, Dan tensed in his seat. He knew this was going to be a non-fatal snake bite.
As the snake bit Courtney (which wasn't in the camera's view) she rose from her seat (and what looked like to Dan, Courtney's face frozen in terror) Without warning, the killer rose out of the cupboards behind Courtney's seat and shot one single bullet. Which hit Courtney right in the back and made her quickly fall back into her seat, in a slumped position. Courtney was dead.
Dan now knew everything.
After the TV turned to black, Dan walked out of the basement in confidence and swiftly shut the door behind him.
-
The nine guests clapped together in the great room as Dan strolled down the staircase. They thought it was the only kind thing to do in this unforgiving game.
"I must congratulate Mr. Greash for finding the riddle's clue. You now all have a few hours to contribute your clues together, before you will be forced to adjourn to your rooms and then state your case. Remember, three of you will be getting scared cards tonight. So every clue will matter tonight." With that, Giles left the guests alone in the great room.
For the first time ever, the guests didn't actually separate in their groups. The ten of them awkwardly stood still. Not bearing a word from their lips. The minority alliance found it funny how the majority alliance would have just split up from them and discuss the game, but now they were going to have to come to them.
After a few more moments of standing, the group with the information separated to the stairs. While the majority alliance shuffled into the parlor.
"Wait. We need to go to the dining room." Dan stopped his group before Natalie could even sit.
"Why?"Jamie questioned.
Dan held up his hand "Just trust me on this one. You'll see when we get there."
Once the group got to the dining room, Dan reached for the drawers behind the dining table and gasped. "I knew it!"
"Knew what?" Jamie questioned.
Natalie & Jamie surrounded the youngest alliance member as he opened the drawer. "Oh my gosh! It's a- hidden tunnel?" Natalie queried.
Natalie was right, hidden through the drawer was a hole big enough for any of the guests to fit through. Through the other tunnel was the drawers in the kitchen, almost like a secret lair for the killer.
"Alright, so what did you find in the basement?" Jamie was eager to find out how Courtney was killed off.
Dan sighed. "Well, where do I start?"
-
Meanwhile, in the parlor. The majority alliance started to crumble.
"We have no information. None!" Reynold paced up and down the parlor, trying to let off steam.
"Maybe if we asked them, they would give us their information?" Talia suggested.
"Don't be silly." Greg scoffed. "We treated them like shit for two days and now we're gonna have to pay for it."
"There has to be a way." Alec shook his head, trying to get a way around the murder in his head.
"There is no other way. We have to think of how she died basically from scratch." Michelle stated, with a big hint of worry trembling in her voice.
"Let's just list off what we have for sure." Reynold held out his hand to count.
Nelson started, "The clothes she was wearing suggested she was killed this morning."
Reynold held out one finger.
"She had a bullet in the back." Brianna peeped.
Reynold held out two fingers.
The group then went silent, not having any more solid clues which were in their hands.
"Well, that's great. At this point, there's going to be seven scared cards !" Reynold let out his frustration.
Whilst Reynold and the rest of the alliance argued, Nelson sat in a concentrated position. Thinking back about the 'deal' made with Natalie and her team. Nelson now knew that his team had no information, he had to get it some way. And throwing his alliance under the bus was now the only way.
-
As Dan finished explaining what was in the basement. The three practiced stating their cases to each other, each of them being practically word for word the same. Jamie even brought out the idea of the three of them getting the best investigator title, which brought smiles to everyone's faces.
The alliance didn't get time to smile for long, though. As Nelson suddenly stormed into the dining room. Interrupting their conversation indefinitely.
"Listen. I'm just gonna put it straight. I trust you guys a lot more than the others, I'm sorry that I've been cold for the past couple days... but I'd really appreciate it if you gave me the clues."
"How do we know you won't snitch this back to your group?" Dan questioned.
Nelson sighed "Because I am pretty sure the killer is on my team."
"Who?" Dan was interested to find out who Nelson thought the killer was. The discussion of the killer had actually died down in all the groups, no one was really theorizing who the killer could be because of the heat of the game.
"Alec. He's a very quiet, yet smart guy. He has been very close to winning the riddles and plus part of me just doesn't trust him." Nelson expressed his feelings towards Alec towards the group.
"To be honest I think Reynold is the killer," Jamie admitted.
"I've been thinking that recently too." Dan agreed with Jamie.
Natalie cut in. "I think it's one of the girls on your team actually. " She pointed to Nelson.
"Really?" Nelson questioned.
"Yeah. Each of them are very sneaky and kind of conniving." Natalie felt the remaining female guests were a bit too cutthroat for her liking.
Nelson shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I guess we'll all be one step closer tomorrow when we see who dies."
Nelson then went quiet, the group knew what this meant. He needed the information, time was running out.
Dan sighed before huddling "Alright. But if you tell your group any of this information I will kill you myself."
Nelson gave a humbling nod before he listened to all the clues. The majority alliance now finally had a crack. And that crack was Nelson.
