《Whodunnit ?》Chapter 9 - The Third Victim

"She's dead right ?" Brianna's voice trembled to Talia. Talia gave Brianna a apologetic smile before giving her a reassuring hug.
Giles appeared out of nowhere "Ah guests it seems that the killer has killed off Miss Fox." Most of the group look at Giles's no-caring attitude about Courtney's murder.
"I need you all to adjourn to the parlor. You all need to decide on an area to investigate. Plus, I have a note from the killer." Giles holds up the allusive Rue Manor envelope.
The ten remaining guests all scurried to the Rue Manor parlor, leaving Courtney's dead body behind in the dining room.
"I just noticed that Jamie's survived two scared cards," Michelle whispered to Reynold. Reynold nodded along, finding it a little suspicious how Jamie has survived the killer's wrath twice.
"Guests as you know I have a note from the killer. Dear guests. Congratulations on making it to the top ten. By tomorrow only eight of you will still be living."
The group all gasped in shock, many of the guests started to worry since the possibility of them dying next was higher than usual.
"That's right. There will be three scared cards at tonight's dinner. And only one of the three scared guests will survive. But for now you must all choose an area to investigate following Courtney's murder."
Giles gave the guests some time to decide. Dan, Natalie & Jamie all huddled together.
"So only one of us can go to each area this time. I want to go to the last known whereabouts." Jamie made his decision quickly.
"I'll go to the crime scene," Natalie said.
"Guess that leaves me with the morgue. Again." Dan sighs, getting sick of seeing the morgue for the third time in a row.
Meanwhile, the majority alliance split up into two groups of two, with the third and last group having three people.
After a few more minutes Giles reentered into the parlor. "Who would like to investigate Courtney's last known whereabouts. The kitchen ?"
Jamie, Reynold & Talia rose their hands and followed Sophie to the kitchen.
"Who'd like to scrutinize the scene of the crime?"
Natalie, Michelle, Nelson & Greg rose their hands.
"Well because of the close proximity of the kitchen & the dining room. You four will have to investigate once Jamie, Talia & Reynold have finished."
"That leaves Dan, Brianna & Greg, please follow me to the morgue."
The kitchen was as clean as usual , nothing was out of place , there was no blood spots. Everything just seemed normal.
"There has to be more here." Jamie shook his head , confused as of why it was so hard to find a clue for this investigation.
"Why would she come into the kitchen?" Talia whispered to Reynold. Reynold just shrugged his shoulders and continued looking around the kitchen.
"Maybe for a snack ?" Jamie suggested , Talia & Reynold ignored Jamie as they went to go investigate in the oven.
Just as Talia & Reynold stuck their heads into the oven Jamie noticed something on one of the kitchen counters.
He couldn't believe it.
It was a clue.
Jamie viciously snapped the note off the kitchen counter and stuffed it in his pocket. Not wanting Talia & Reynold to see anything else.

Jamie put on his acting skills "I can't believe there's nothing here."
"I know right ! It's so confusing." Talia fell for Jamie's sarcasm.
Just as Jamie smirked at Talia's obliviousness the estate bell rang. And this time , the minority alliance had the advantage.
"Well I'm glad the body's been moved." Greg sighed as he entered the dining room with Michelle , Natalie & Nelson right behind him.
The group quickly split up , with Greg , Nelson & Michelle searching the dining table , whereas Natalie was closely inspecting the curtains.
"She's not gonna find anything there." Michelle sniggers as Natalie disappears behind the window.
Greg shakes his head in Natalie's direction "She's such a stupid girl."
But the trick was on the three as Natalie did find something behind the curtain , a cage.
Since the curtains reached the floor Natalie was relieved to see that the other three in the room wouldn't catch on.
Natalie bent down and tried to open the closed cage but it wouldn't budge. Natalie started looking for keys or anything to unlock the cage.
But she couldn't find anything.
She cursed to herself as it seemed Nelson had found a clue underneath the dining room table.
"There's a line of slime here." Nelson pulls a disgusted face as he runs his fingers along the translucent slime , making a line from the curtains.
Nelson met eyes with Natalie , realizing she knew what behind that curtain was part of a clue.
As Michelle & Greg continued investigating , Natalie quickly swatted her hand at Nelson , directing him to come to her.
Nelson gingerly walked over to Natalie and peered where she was standing , once he saw the cage he rose his eyebrows in surprise.
Natalie unexpectedly tugged Nelson to her and whispered into his ear.
"This stays between us. If you tell you're little group about this , I will kill you."
Nelson was shocked at Natalie's sudden harshness to her voice and just replied with away quick nod. Natalie leaned in once more to whisper again.
"The cage is locked. Me and you need to find something that unlocks it."
Nelson gives another quick nod before walking back over to Greg & Michelle , not wanting to look suspicious in front of his allies.
"There's a few blood drops here." Greg pointed out a few blood drops by the legs of one of the dining room chairs.
"Wasn't that the chair Courtney was sitting on ?" Michelle asked Greg.
"Could have been?" Greg noted the possibility.
Nelson tried to pull everything in the dining room , wondering if there was a lever which could open up the gate.
Sitting down on the chair Greg & Michelle were investigating was the apparent answer as the cage's door swiftly opened.
Nelson & Natalie met eyes once they both realized the chair was the object that opened the cage.
"Was that the chair Courtney was sitting on ?" Natalie mouthed to the charity worker from across the room.
Nelson returned with a quick nod, remembering how the certain chair in the dining room had been the chair that Courtney always sat on.
The two now had the most information from the crime scene , Natalie herself thought that was all there was in the dining room but Nelson found another piece of evidence.

By the chest of draws was another cage , covered by a ordinary piece of cloth.
Slowly taking off the cloth , Nelson almost jumped backwards. A medium sized red and black snake slivered around the cage. Nelson tried to catch his breath at the shock before Michelle looked at him suspiciously.
Without warning the estate bell rang , Michelle & Greg shook their heads. Thinking no one had found anything significant in the crime scene. But little did they know ... Natalie & Nelson had all the information they needed.
Brianna shivered once entering the cold morgue , she found it unfair how she had to witness Courtney's dead body only minutes ago. But now she needed to focus and find clues , otherwise she could be next on the killers radar.
"There doesn't seem to be anything obvious at first sight." Greg squinted his eyes at Courtney's face , looking for any possible markings left by the killer.
Dan took his usual approach when looking in the morgue , looking at the bags of evidence which are laid out beside the body after each murder.
Dan rummaged through Courtney's fluorescent pink top for a while , but didn't find anything out of the ordinary. He then proceeded to look at her shoes , which had the tiniest drops of blood on.
The footballer took note of the blood drops on Courtney's shoes before moving onto her jeans. Dan immediately spotted some dried blood spots near the ankle area of the jeans.
Dan ran his fingers through the dried blood spots to feel two tiny holes. He didn't know how to feel about the holes , could they be crucial ?.
He jumped slightly when he heard Greg's voice suddenly fill the morgue. "She's bleeding !"
Dan dropped the jeans and scurried over to Brianna & Greg , who were examining Courtney's back.
The lawyers deceased back had some sort of wound , with blood profusely pouring from it.
"What is that?" Brianna gawked.
"Don't know , I'll get some tweezers." Greg grabbed the tweezers from the side table and jabbed them into Courtney's back.
After twisting the tweezers for a while , Greg pulled out a single bullet. Which caused gasps from all around.
"So it was a gunshot !" Dan gasped.
"But that can't be true." Brianna shook her head. "We never heard a gunshot."
"It sure is confusing." Greg rubbed his chin , already confused on how the bullet got into Courtney's back.
Before the three investigators knew it , the bell rang and they were forced out of the morgue.

The ten guests and Giles all met in the parlour.
"I will now give you all time to share what you found or didn't find in your respective areas," Giles said his usual line before disappearing to let the guests chat.
The group of ten split off (without surprise) into their two groups.
While the majority group discussed what they found , Nelson couldn't help but look at Natalie. Wondering how he was going to get the information he found to her , without his group noticing.
"Nelson? Hello ?" Reynold waved his hand in front of Nelson's face.
Nelson jumped with surprise "Sorry, what were we all talking about ?"
"We were talking about what we found at the crime scene ?" Michelle questioned Nelsons apparent uninterested manor.
"Oh right , um I didn't find anything," Nelson lied quickly before facing back to Natalie , trying to signal her in some way.
Michelle furrowed her eyebrows " Whatever. Me and Greg only found a few blood spots by Courtney's chair and some weird slime ".
"Slime ?" Talia made an unusual voice.
"Yeah Slime, I don't see how slime can make someone bleed." Greg scratched his head.
Alec buried his face in his hands "This one is so confusing."
Meanwhile, the small group of Jamie, Dan & Natalie discussed their findings.
"I found this in the kitchen," Jamie whispered to his group as he pulled out the note he found at the last known whereabouts.
Sit at your usual seat at breakfast and you'll be spared.
~ The Killer
"Wow." Natalie breathed. "I guess the killer wanted to kill her when we were all together."
"How would the killer know she would come to the kitchen, though ?" Dan speculated the note that Jamie found.
Jamie shook his head "I don't know but this defiantly lead her to the dining room."
That was Natalie's cue. "Guys there was so much in the dining room." She said excitedly , knowing only she and Nelson (who she seemed to suddenly trust) had the information.
"There was this cage behind the curtain. I tried to open it but I couldn't plus I didn't want Michelle & Greg seeing what I was doing. Long story short , Nelson came over and I threatened him not to say what I was doing to his group. We agreed to look for what'd open the cage. As Michelle & Greg pointed out a line of slime coming from the cage to Courtney's chair , Nelson sat down on Courtney's chair which opened the cage."
Jamie didn't join in with Natalie's excitement. "You let him see the information ?!" Jamie hissed. "What if he spills this information to his group."
"He won- "
"You don't know that Natalie !" Jamie suddenly shouted , which left a eerie echo in the parlour as the other group of six awkwardly looked at the group of three.
Dan went next "There were no markings on her body except for two things ... For one there were two tiny hole marks on her jeans which had dried blood spots , the blood spots were on her shoes also."
"So she got bit by something," Jamie concluded confidently.
"Well, we can't be sure ..."
"Why not?" Jamie & Natalie both said in unison.
Dan looked at the other group quickly before leaning in "She had a bullet hole in her back ".
"What ? How is that possible , there was no indication of a gun at the crime scene." Natalie started worrying , wondering if any of the majority knew how the bullet got there.
"Calm down," Jamie said bluntly to the worrying twenty-nine-year-old.
"We're going to beat them today. It's time for us to take control." Dan said. Putting enthusiasm into every word.

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
