《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 21

Katie smiled, standing next to Alex as Leah and Kara were being taught the correct technique to fly by J'onn, but he was still fine with them calling him Hank. She was in her suit, mainly because Alex wanted her to train. "Come on, Katie."
Katie rubbed her arms, fidgeting with her bracelet, "I'm not so sure."
"The best way for you to control it is to practice." Alex sighs, walking over to Katie, "Now give me the bracelet." Katie reluctantly pulls the bracelet off of her arm and places it in Alex's hand, "See look, you're not lighting anything on fire."
Katie looked up at the sun, feeling the radiation absorbing in her instead of the bracelet, flames engulfed her hands, "Okay, now what?"
"Well, this was J'onn's idea, but he believes if you can learn to fly, you'll be able to control it better."
"Fly?" Katie pointed up, shooting a flame in the air when she did, and flinched, "Like Kara and Leah?"
"Well, yes and no." Alex tries to explain, looking down at the flames in her hands, "If you can create enough heat, just like a hot air balloon, you should be able to fly."
"So I just-" Katie pointed her arms straight down, "Push the flames from below me until I'm up in the air?"
"Basically, yeah."
Katie pursed her lips, not particularly sure what she was supposed to do, "Uh..." She forced flames to come out of her hands at a quick rate, making her quickly fly in the air, but she freaked out, extinguishing them, and immediately falling to the ground on her butt.
Alex laughed down at her, "Well, you can fly."
Katie stuck her legs out from the ground, looking over at Alex, "I can light you on fire, you know that right?"
"Yeah, but you won't."
Katie stands up from her spot, refusing to accept Alex's help, afraid she might accidentally burn her. She sighed, trying to concentrate on the flames, she shot out into the air. Instead of freaking out this time, she laughed when she saw how high off the ground she was. She was thankful that she didn't really have a fear of heights, a fear of falling maybe, but not a fear of heights. She twirled in the air, Leah flew over beside her.
"Look who's getting the hang of flying."
Katie smiled at her, there were flames coming out below her feet as she flew, "I didn't know how fun this could be."
Leah twirled in the air, "Right?"
J'onn flew over to them, Kara closely behind, "This isn't about fun. This is my one chance to train you in proper flight technique."

Leah nodded for Katie to follow her, out of the three girls, Katie seemed to be paying more attention to J'onn than the rest of them. She really wanted to make sure she knew what she was doing when she flew through the air. Katie stumbled in her landing, but other than that she was fine.
"You could feel like that all the time, you know. Free. Untethered. True to who you really are."
"The world needs Hank Henshaw more than it needs J'onn J'onzz."
Alex walked over to them, holding a tablet up to them, "Okay, I've pinpointed the location of Room 52 at Lord Technologies, assuming we can trust James Olsen's intel."
Hank put his hands on his hips, "Superman trusts him. That's good enough for me."
"Captain Marvel and Supergirl trusts him and that's more than good enough." Alex smiles over at her sister and Leah.
Kara crossed her arms over chest, "If you're infiltrating Lord Tech, I'm in. Max beat James to a pulp for finding Room 52. What could he be hiding in there?"
"We will find out. But it will require subterfuge and subtlety, not a red cape or a fancy suit."
"Couldn't it also require a bit of Martian manpower?" Katie suggested, taking the bracelet from Alex.
"That's not an option."
"You know, when I came out, embraced my powers, finally letting myself be who I'm meant to be, it turned out to be the best thing I ever did."
"That's you."

Leah leaned against Winn's shoulder, listening in on her mother's conversation, "That was a genuine laugh. That was not fake, that was real."
"What do you think they're talking about in there?" James questions, fidgeting with his hands.
Winn smiles, "Kara and Leah do have this handy ability called superhearing..."
"Yeah, but that just feels wrong, doesn't it?" Kara fiddled with her hands, looking at the group, "Is that wrong?"
Katie grinned, twirling to look at Kara, whispering, "Do it."
"The eccentric criminal known as "Toyman" to his fellow inmates escaped from the Van Kull Maximum Security Prison this morning." Katie got up from her seat as fast as she could and snatched the remote from the man, "Toyman got his name from the dangerous and..." She quickly muted it before it could even say anything more. Katie's eyes fell down to her brother, who had moved up, making Leah get off of him. She quickly dashed out of the room, followed by her brother.
Leah opened her mouth, but Kara spoke up, "What's going in with them?"
"I don't know."
Lucy came walking out of the room with a smile, going over to them, "She's so nice."

Leah looked at Lucy in surprise, "No one has ever said that before."
James cleared his throat, "Um... So, did she, uh... Did she want something from you or..."
"Yes. She wants me to be her general counsel, starting immediately."
Kara's mouth drops open, "What?"
"Congratulations. That's... That's amazing. So you would be here?"
"Uh, yeah, I have to think about it a little bit, but..."
Kara pointed off down the hall, "The, uh, old GC's office is on this floor."
"Wow, so you'd... Then you'd be right here."
"Yeah."
"That's great..."
Leah stood up when she saw a woman with two men walking in, "Special Agent Cameron Chase, with the FBI. I'm here for Winslow Schott, Jr. and his twin sister Katherine Schott."
Winn walked up, Katie right behind him, "That's us..." Katie's eyes moved over to Kara and Leah before she looked back at the agent.
*~*
"I'm sure you're aware that your father escaped prison this morning. Has he called you?"
"No." Katie and Winn said at the same time.
"Has he come to your house?"
"No."
"Has he attempted to contact you in any way?"
"No." Katie stopped fidgeting with her bracelet, "No, he wouldn't even know where to look, okay."
"Miss Schott, your father is unhinged and extremely dangerous."
Winn leaned back in his chair, "So nothing's changed, that's good to know."
"Did he have any friends he might want to contact?"
Katie glared at her, "If it weren't already apparent by the trail of bodies that he leaves in his wake, he hates people. So no, he didn't have any friends."
"As his children, you two must have some-"
"The day my father set off a toy bomb and killed half a dozen people was the day we stopped being his children." Katie stood up from the seat, grabbing her brother, "I think we're done here."
The twins left the room, going to the balcony of the building and looking over at the scenery. Katie's grip on the wall was tight, she looked down at her hands to see flames, but she quickly calmed herself down. Winn knelt down and gave his sister a kiss on the head before walking off, Leah came over to him and pulled him in for a hug.
Kara walked over to her. Katie sighs, looking at her best friend, "Guessing you were listening to that whole thing?"
"You told me your dad was in prison but not that he-"
"Because I didn't want you looking at me the way that you're looking at me right now. And you wanna know the worst part?" Katie released a forced laugh, looking away from Kara, "He wasn't always crazy. In fact, he was a good dad, he was normal. We'd go to his workshop and tinker, build a toy."
"So you never saw the signs?"
"No. He was... He was quiet. Scared to death of losing his job. He was angry. I guess no one knew how angry until it was too late. His boss stole his toy designs and got rich off them." Katie sighs, leaning against the veranda.
"Did your dad fight back?"
"No. He was a coward. He didn't say anything, he didn't stand up for himself. What he did was put a bomb in a teddy bear. And then he sent one to his boss. Chester Dunholtz. Except his assistant opened the package. It killed her and five other people."
Kara looked down, "I know there's nothing anyone can say to make you feel better right now."
"Well, hey, you have a homicidal maniac in the family too, so you know where I'm coming from."
Kara sighs, looking back up at Katie, "At least your father knows enough to keep his distance."
Katie breathes in heavily, pulling a toy from her bag, "Except I found this on my desk this morning." She pulled the string at the back of the toy.
"Come see me at our favorite place. I'll be waiting for you two."
Kara moved her eyes away from the toy, "Oh, Katie..."
"I don't know what to do," Katie admitted, quickly putting the two back.
"Why did you lie to the feds?"
Katie shrugged, "I don't know. Okay, I've spent my entire life just trying to forget what he did. Trying not to be consumed by this anger that I have for him. And trying, even in my best moments, to forgive. But I still just hate him." Kara grabbed Katie, pulling her in for a hug.
Agent Chase came back, "I'm leaving an agent here, in case your father shows up."
Katie pulled away from Kara, looking at her and then back at the Agent, releasing a sigh, "Agent Chase... There's, uh, something I have to tell you."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Katie walked beside Winn, looking at him as he spoke into the wire, "Uh... Approaching the target now. Oh, God, it still smells like fish."
"You don't need to speak into the wire for it to work."
"Oh, uh, yeah. Copy that."
Katie's eyes fell on the building, her heart beating quickly in her chest. Winn glanced over at her, grabbing her hand and squeezing it tightly. Despite the intense warmth coming from her hand, Winn kept holding on to her.
Leah stared over at Winn and Katie, turning back to the Agent, "You can't let anything happen to them."
Agent Chase looked at Kara and Leah, "His father killed an agent the last time we apprehended him. We're not leaving anything to chance."
"Agent Chase-"
"Miss Danvers, Miss Grant, the only reason you're here is because your friends wouldn't do this without you. So be quiet, stay out of the way."
