《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 22

Katie gripped tightly to her brother's hand when she caught sight of the doll, "I love you. Do you love me? I love you. Do you love me?"
Winn let got of Katie's hand to pick up the doll, looking at the weird looking thing. Katie followed behind him, "Dad?"
Katie and Winn turn a corner to see their father standing feet away from them, "God, look at the two of you."
Winn sighs, slowly walking closer to him, "You need to turn yourself in."
Their father laughs, "I broke out of prison for you, for us. I'm sorry I was gone so long."
Katie tightens her hands into fists, "You need a doctor, okay? You need some help."
"My daughter." He smiled at her, "My good little girl. My greatest work."
Katie scoffs, taking the two from Winn, "I thought this was your greatest work." She tosses it in front of her father.
"We're the same, you and I. We're linked. Together we can do anything."
Winn grabbed Katie's arm, pulling her close to him, "We are... we are not the same."
"That genius that lesser people call madness. That's inside of you too." He tilts his head, "Why didn't you visit me? I just wanted to know that the two of you were okay."
"We were not okay." Katie says softly, "We watched our dad get dragged off to prison when we were 11 for murder. How okay could we be after that, Dad?"
Winn turned around when all the soldiers came into the room, "Whoa, whoa, it's okay. It's okay!"
"Hands where I can see them, now!"
"Easy!" Winn yells at them.
"I said hands up!"
Katie looked at her father, "Damn it, Dad, put your hands up!"
"Katie, how could you?" This was directed toward his baby girl, his little daughter. She used to be a daddy's girl, she loved her father, she loved watching him work on toys. But then he killed people, and he was acting like she betrayed him.
"Suspect not cooperating. Weapons free-"
"No!" Winn screams, grabbing Katie away from the gunfire, "No!" Katie watched as the bullets hit her father, but he was cracking like glass. Soon it all tumbled down.
Katie pointed, "What the... It's not him. He's not here."
"I told you to come alone. Now run."
Katie looked down at the toy, "What?"
The voice got angrier this time, more demanding, "RUN!"
Winn's head shot up when poisonous gas began to leak out of the stuffed elephant toys, he grabbed Katie, trying to get out of the building. Everyone coughed violently, along with Katie. This wasn't a form of radiation that she could absorb. Kara and Leah flew in, looking over at them. They sucked in all the gas then flew out. Everyone piled out of the arcade, Katie coughed when she got outside, covering her mouth.
"He specifically asked you to come to this arcade? Does your father have some sort of plan for you?"
"I don't know."
"He said, "I broke out of prison for you, for us." What does that mean?"
"I don't know," Winn repeated.
Agent Chase moved her head to look at Katie, "He called you his "greatest work." And he said, "Together we can do anything.""
Katie scoffs, glaring up at the woman, "He's crazy. I mean, I don't even know why you're writing all this stuff down. It doesn't make any sense." Agent Chase was called away, but her eyes stayed on Katie.

Leah coughed beside them, rubbing her throat. Winn placed a hand on her shoulder, "You sure you're alright?"
"Yeah. I don't normally inhale..." Leah gave him a reassuring smile.
Katie grabbed her arm, rubbing it, "They're going to kill him. They're going to go find him, and then go kill him."
"Not if we find him first."
Katie shook her head, "Kara, no, no. Okay? I'm not going to make you commit a federal offense by going around these guys. No, no, this is our burden." Winn held his sister's hand, giving it a small squeeze.
"Which means it's ours too." Leah cuts in. Winn groans, pulling Katie with him, "Winn, think about everything you've done for me, for us."
"The last few months, becoming Supergirl, I wouldn't have been able to survive without you."
"You'd be fine. I mean, yeah, the Supergirl suit sucked. But you and Leah, with everything that you have?" Katie lets out a small scoff, "Everything that you... That you are? No, you don't really need us."
"You're wrong." Leah cuts in.
"No."
"I do. I know what it's like to feel isolated and alone. I relive that feeling in my darkest moments. But when I'm with you, I never feel that way. When your dad says he misses you, I believe him. Because if you weren't in my life..." Leah takes Winn's hands, "I'd be lost too."
"I have a creepy little doll that I could give you for when you're lonely," Winn says in a sort of a teasing way, trying to lighten the mood.
Leah releases a small laugh, "Please just let me be there for you. The way you've always been there for me."
Kara looked down at her phone, "Except just not in the next 20 minutes. Cat just texted me."
"Go ahead."
Kara coughs uncomfortably, "She needs you too, Leah."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Kara and Leah glance at each other, "Tell you what?"
"That Katie Schott, and Winn Schott, your boyfriend, our beloved little computer elves, are the spawns of Toyman."
Leah held her hands together, "I don't think they really wanted anyone to know."
"Well, perhaps they should consider changing their name." Cat turned around, heading to her desk, "So, when can we set up the TV interview? He seems like a very sensitive boy. Do you think he can cry on cue?"
"Ms. Grant, Katie and Winn are not doing any interviews."
"Fine. But if I see him talking to Diane Sawyer, he's fired. Now I need you to go down to HR and get me the offer packet for Lucy Lane. I want to make sure that everything is organized for her to sign tomorrow." Leah sat down on one of the couches, leaning her head back in exhaustion.
"Has she said yes yet?" Kara quickly questions.
"No. But she will."
Kara rubbed at her arm, "You don't think you should have talked to James before offering his girlfriend a job?"
Cat sighed, pulling her reading glasses off, "Oh, Kerah. James' problem is not having his girlfriend at work. His problem is having his girlfriend at work while he's having whatever he's having with... Someone else." Leah smirked in amusement watching her cousin squirm.
"I don't know what you are talking about. There is nothing going on between James and I."
"As much as I love watching you millennials deny your feelings, I pay you not to have them. Now, I need a lawyer, and this is a place of work, not the bullpen of TMZ. Go get me the offer packet."

"Yes, Ms. Grant."
Cat sighs, looking over at her daughter as Kara left the room, "Honestly, she should be paying me by the hour."
"You're good for her mom." Leah smiles, "She needs someone who can be frank with her."
"Well, if you weren't always busy swooning over your troll, she'd have someone other than Kathy to talk to."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
"Okay, you see this etching." Winn points at the inside of the toy.
Kara squints at it, "Is that a "Y"? What does that mean?"
"It's a slingshot. Slingschott Toys was the company my dad created. It went bankrupt, but the old factory's still standing."
Kara looked at the twins, "Do you think that's where he is?"
"I know it."
"I'll get Leah." Kara nodded at them.
Katie grabbed hold of Kara's arm, "Be careful, okay. I can't lose my two best friends."
"We will."
Winn held Katie's hand, "They'll be okay."
"It's our dad, Winn." Katie turned her head to her brother, "When was anyone okay around him?"
"Good point."
🎆~🎆~🎆
Katie, Winn, Leah, and Kara were all at Kara's shared apartment, standing around the kitchen's island. Winn shook his head, looking at Leah, "You know, I never should have let you go in there. If he would have hurt you..."
"I'm fine. We're fine."
Kara noticed the phone in Winn's hand, "Who are you calling?"
"Agent Chase."
"No. You know they'll kill him." Leah snatched the phone away from Winn.
"Let them." Katie's voice cracked at the end, "Let them. The world will be better off for it."
"You don't want that on your conscience. We'll find him and We'll get him back to prison..."
"What's the point, huh? There's something rotten inside of him, something that can't be helped."
"He's sick, you said so yourself. One day he was normal and the next he snapped."
Katie shook her head, tears forming in her eyes, "No, no. It can't be like that, no."
"Sometimes that's just the way it happens." Leah sighs.
Winn turned to them now, fresh tears on his face, "Well, then what's to stop it from happening to me? Huh?" Winn runs his hands down his face, "You know, my father and I were inseparable. Like, we looked the same, we talked the same. We were good at the same things. And now he says we're linked. Like, what if he's right?"
"He isn't."
"His genes are like ticking time bombs, just waiting to go off inside of me. Turn me into him."
"That's not going to happen." Leah sat next to him, taking his hands, "You're a good person."
"That's what people said about him." Katie spoke lowly, "Then he cracked."
"And now every time I start to get angry, I think, Could this be it? Could this be the day that I lose everything?"
"Winn, the day that your father killed those six people was like for me the day my planet exploded. The course of our lives changed in that single moment. You are not going to turn into your father. Because the day your world was destroyed, you didn't give in to rage and hate like your father, like my mom. We both lost our worlds and now we're trying to give back because of it. And you and your father aren't the only ones that are linked. We are too. And I'm not gonna let anyone mess with that." Winn moved forward and gave Leah a kiss, putting his forehead against hers.
Katie fumbled with her bracelet, "I'm going to go..."
"Katie-"
"I'm fine." Katie took a step away from Kara when she reached out for her, "I'm going to go." Katie walked outside, quickly trying to leave, even if she lived there, she didn't want to be in the room. As she almost reached the elevator, a cloth covered her mouth. Katie released a muffled cry before she completely blacked out.
Katie blinked her eyes open, but her vision was still blurry. Her glasses were no longer on her face at this point, "Don't be scared. I just need you to listen."
Katie wheezed, still not registering what had happened, "What do you want?"
"What I wanted for over a decade. To be your father again."
"Too late."
"In any case, it's all Dunholtz's fault and we're going to make him pay."
Katie squinted up, "Chester Dunholtz?"
"Yeah."
"Your old boss?"
"Mm-hmm."
Katie shook in her seat, wanting to run and not be around her father, forgetting she could light the room on fire, "That's why you broke out of jail, so you could get revenge on him for what, stealing your dumb toy designs?"
"No. No, this isn't about him stealing a toy, this is about him stealing yours and Winn's childhood. Stealing my chance to watch you two grow up. I went to prison because of him. Katie, I almost lost you and Winn because of him. But I have a plan on how we can make it right."
"You're going to kill him."
"No, I'm not going to kill him. You're going to kill him for me." Katie couldn't speak, she just looked up at her father, "Today is the start of the National City Toy Convention, and for that, I made you this special gun. You can take this with you right through the metal detectors and right past security. You can also take it on stage with you when Chester Dunholtz receives his award. Now, you'll walk up to the podium, aim at his face, right between the eyes... and you will shoot."
"I would never do that."
"I know." Schott nodded his head, then pointed to the corner of the room, "That is why your brother will do it."
Katie moved her head to see that their father had also kidnapped Winn and had him tied up, his mouth gagged, "He won't either."
"I'm going to make it easy on him by taking the decision out of his hands. I've planted 10 bombs in 10 different toys at the convention. You won't know where they are. And if he doesn't kill Dunholtz, I'm gonna set them off."
Schott pulled the gag from Winn's mouth, "Dad, listen to me. There will be hundreds of people there. Kids."
"Mm-hmm."
"They will all die," Winn says full of urgency and terror.
"No, no, they won't, they won't. Because you won't let that happen. You are going to save them by killing him."
"We'll all end up in prison."
"And that's what makes this the perfect plan. Because whether we escape or end up in prison or what have you, we are gonna be together."
"How did this happen to you?" Katie cried.
"Do you know that even with all the amazing toys I've built, you're the best thing I ever made. You're just like me."
"We're nothing like you."
"Don't underestimate yourself."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Leah and Kara land in front of Winn before the bullets could reach him. Winn grabbed hold of Leah, "He planted 10 bombs here. You have to find them before he blows this place up."
Leah and Kara search the building, Leah's head falls to the ground, seeing Katie tied up and Schott next to her, "He's in the basement! He's detonating the bombs!"
Kara flew up in the air, noticing all of the bombs, "Everybody, move, come this way!"
Leah used her laser vision on the water system, making it fall, while Kara froze it as a protective wall. Katie looked at her father from her seat, watching as he tried to run. Katie lit the restraints on fire, standing up, she burnt her clothes off, revealing her suit hidden underneath, "You're not going anywhere."
🎆~🎆~🎆
Kara flew into her room, looking at Alex, she turned around to see her, "Uh, did you forget TV night? Game of Thrones and double-cheese pizza?"
"Sorry." Kara opened the fridge, grabbing a water bottle, "I was flying around, looking for Katie."
Alex looked at her, "Everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, it's just... Katie arrested her own father today. I wanted to be there for her. Leah is there for Winn, and Katie she has no one."
"That's not true." Alex shook her head, "She has all of us. Maybe she just needs a little time on her own. Alone time doesn't hurt anyone."
"I know, it's just... Winn said something to me today. He admitted that he had bundled up feelings for me, that he could finally admit it because he was with Leah because he now loved Leah. I'm just afraid that Katie is bundling up her feelings and will explode."
"Literally? Or figuratively?"
"Both." Kara mumbles, "She's been my best friend for years, and I've never seen her get so upset."
"Things happen, she may not have said anything about her problems because she didn't want to burden you with them."
"But I don't care. She could have told me she felt lonely."
"Maybe she cared." Alex smiles, "Come on, let's eat some food. Katie will show up, she does live here you know."

That doesn't mean it has to end badly, just that it has to end.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
