《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 19

"I'd like to address the rumors of an incident at Lord Technologies."
Leah cringes, "Oh this is gonna be ugly."
"We're the target of industrial espionage. Thankfully, there were no casualties and those responsible have been apprehended. Thank you."
Katie stood up straight, "He's covering up the attack."
Kara paused the video, "What is he up to?"
"Well, let me see what I can find out," James suggested.
Kara twisted to him quickly, "No way. No! Max Lord is way too dangerous."
"Hey, I've dusted off my press credentials. Let me just talk to him, see what I can dig up."
Leah turned her head at the sound of her mother, "Mom's on her way up."
Kara began to shuffle at the thought of Miss Grant, "Um, today, we have to seem really, really normal. Like, like not just normal-normal, but super-normal. Only, no... No super."
"Are you having a stroke?" Winn points at Kara, turning his head to Katie, "Is this what a stroke looks like?"
"Miss Grant thinks I'm Supergirl," Kara says under her breath.
"What?" Winn and James exclaim in unison.
"I will handle it. But if she sees us acting weird, it's gonna blow everything. I just need to heat up her coffee..."
Katie saw the prints underneath, "Uh, maybe not on that-"
The coffee pops up, pouring everywhere, Kara yelps, "What do we do?"
"That got everywhere!" Winn whines out.
"All right, all right. Round 2, round 2." James poured a normal brewed cup of coffee in a mug.
Leah facepalmed, "Oh dear God."
"Good idea. Hurry." Kara stammers, "I gotta hurry." She jogs out of the room, everyone just looking at her.
Katie looked down, picking up Kara's glasses, "Uh, this is-" James gasped, grabbing them and rushing after her.
Winn puffs out his cheeks, "Yeah, she's doomed."
Leah groans out, "Poor Kara."
Winn grabs Leah by her hand, pulling her over, "I wanted to talk with you."
Katie looked over and groaned, "Ew, yeah, I'm leaving."
Leah laughed, "What, Winn?"
"So uh, we've gone on dates, I sang to you, you even moved into my apartment." Winn stammers on, "And uh, I never, uh, I never actually asked you to be my official girlfriend..."
Leah giggles, intertwining her fingers with Winn, "And that answer is yes, most definitely yes."
Winn sighs in relief, "G-good."
"You know what we need?" Leah asks.
"Sushi?"
"Yeah." Leah held his hand, "I'm sure my mom won't be mad if I steal you for the day."
"Another date Miss Grant... ugh, yeah, no, I can't call you Miss Grant, that makes me think of your mother."
Leah laughed at him, "Yeah." She pulled out her phone, "I'm gonna order out and we can eat back at your apartment while watching The Avengers on Netflix."
"Did I ever tell you how much you looked like the Black Widow?"

"I get that a lot." Leah nods.
"I mean you are much more badass." Winn smiles, walking next to her, as she texted the Sushi place.
"What do you want?"
"Can you order some Temaki? Katie has been wanting some, I'll save her it in the fridge."
"Yeah. But I was asking what you wanted."
"Rainbow Roll," Winn answers, opening his apartment building.
"Alright. And everything is ordered." Leah walked in behind him, shutting the door, "It says it should be here in a couple hours."
"A couple hours?" Winn questions, "How much did you order?"
"I got some extra stuff for Katie and Kara."
"How much extra stuff?" Winn looks at her phone, "Oh jeez, how much can they eat?"
"A lot." Leah laughs, flopping down on the couch, "Are we going to watch the movie or...?"
"Or what?" Winn grins, sitting next to her.
Leah rolls over, wrapping her legs around Winn's waist, "You know."
Winn pulled her down for a kiss, when her phone buzzed loudly, "Every time!"
Leah moved over and grabbed it, "Ugh, back at the DEO. Non is asking for a trade." She looked at Winn, "I'm sorry, honey, I've got to go."
"I know. I know." Winn sighs, giving her a kiss, "I'll see you later."
"When the sushi gets here just use my card."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Katie walked into the DEO, surprised that she was called in, "Why was I brought?"
"You're a DEO agent, you're going to need field experience." Vasquez states, "Got get in your suit, Solar Flare."
(Like Marvel's Phoenix's suit)
"Oh..." Katie watched as Vasquez walked off, she forgot that Vasquez had named her on the spot when General Lane was at the DEO. She found her suit, lifting up the materials, she smiled at it, they had gotten rid of the skirt, and changed the colors. It was a mixture of the colors you'd see in a flame, red, and gold. It was a full body suit similar to Leah's but it had a different emblem other than the S. It looked like a bird was on the chest, she put it on, taking her glasses off of her face and placing it in her locker.
Leah walks in, in her own suit, "Katie, looking good."
"Well, I'm Solar Flare." Katie grins, walking beside her, "Vazquez gave me the name."
"It matches." Leah laughs, walking over to where Alex and Kara was.
"Now we know why Non took Hank," Kara says to them, crossing her arms over her chest.
Katie looked between them, "So, what are we going to do?"
"If I turn down the deal, Non kills Hank. If I go through with it, I free a criminal with the strength of you." Alex sighs, each of them pause when they see who was in the room, "General Lane..."
"Well, pleasure to see you again, Agent Danvers." His weary eyes moved to the aliens and then the mutant in the room.

Kara glared at him, "Wish we could say the same and it's Director Danvers."
"Not anymore." General Lane handed Alex a folder, "I've been granted authority over the DEO by order of the President."
Katie purses her lips, "This feels like a coup."
"Nothing so nefarious. Considering the stakes, Washington wants a commander in place without any personal ties to the hostage. My orders are to locate the alien garrison and return Director Henshaw safely to his post."
Alex looked at the group of superheroes next to her, before looking back at Lane, "The base is yours, sir."
"Now, if you'll excuse me, ladies." Katie inhales deeply, about to follow Kara, Leah, and Alex out when General Lane stopped her, "Solar Flare, is it? You are an active member of the DEO, am I right?"
Katie's eyes fall to Vazquez, before giving him a curt nod, "Yes, sir."
"I've read your file." General Lane threw it on the table, her name was classified, so it simply said Solar Flare on it.
Katie glared at him, "You read my file?"
"I needed to know what kind of assets the DEO has." General Lane crossed his arms behind his back, "Theoretically, it states that you could possible pull the solar radiation from a Kryptonian, causing them to grow weak."
Katie's arms fell to her side, "I could what...?"
"We'll need that power while we interrogate the alien hostage known as Astra."
"I can't do that, and if I could I wouldn't do it for you."
General Lane smirked down at her, "You are obliged as a DEO agent to do as told by your commanding officer. So if you like it or not, Solar Flare, you will be doing as I say."
Katie rolled her eyes, "I haven't gotten control of my powers, sir, so it is nearly impossible for me to do what you want."
"Then make it possible in the next five minutes."
Katie looked at General Lane in anger as he walked back to his men, her mouth dropped open, releases a huff of air. She looked down at her bracelet to see that it was flashing red. Vasquez came running over to her, "Solar Flare." She grabbed Katie's shoulders, "You're causing your bracelet to malfunction, you are discharging too much solar radiation that it can't handle the amounts. You need to calm down."
Katie looked at Vasquez giving her a nod, taking deep breaths before she walked over to General Lane, "Sir, I am ready to take your orders."
"Good." General Lane nodded, "Follow me."
Katie took out her phone as she walked behind General Lane, sending a text to Alex to give Leah and Kara a call. Katie walked into the cell room behind Lane, her eyes falling to Leah's mother. Katie tilted her head at the woman, she had seen the hologram of Alura, but seeing an actual living version of the woman, made it almost surreal. The only thing that allowed her to tell the difference was the strands of silver hair.
"I'm General Samuel Lane of the United States Army."
Astra stood from her spot, standing tall as she looked down at him, "I wonder how many of your fellow humans you had to kill in order to achieve such a rank. And yet you call me a threat."
"When I was a little boy, my daddy used to take me and my sister to the movies. Saw a picture called The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was about an alien, like yourself, who came to Earth and threatened to destroy it if human beings didn't change their wicked ways. I had nightmares for months. And do you know that still, today, when I look at you, I am right back in that old theater. Afraid."
Astra's eyes faltered slightly, "On Krypton, it is a show of great strength to admit one's fears to an enemy."
"Which is why I told you. I wanted you to know that, by your world's standards, I am a man of honor. And I take no pleasure in what comes next." General Lane turned to Katie and the man next to her, nodding at them both.
Katie moved forward, her hands up to the woman, unsure of how she was going to do this. She breathed in, focusing on stealing the solar radiation from Astra's body, her hands shut into a fist, noticing how Astra's movements faltered. "I'm so sorry."
Astra's eyes widen at the girl almost surprised that she would apologize, fear ran through her when guards came into her cell, she tried to fight them off, but Katie had taken much of her power. They held her down, pushing her on her knees.
General Lane walked up, holding the needle full of liquid kryptonite, "Now, you are going to tell me the location of your base. The only question is whether you tell me before we start or after."
Kara and Leah walked in, "What are you doing?" They groan when the kryptonite hits them, feeling suddenly weak. Katie felt powerful in the room, most likely because she was absorbing the radiation kryptonite expels.
"He's right. They lights." Alex helped the two, "The kryptonite's weakening you."
Leah was still pushing to get to her mother, as Astra spoke to her, "This is who you choose to side with? Against your own people? Your own family?"
Leah fell forward, right in front of her mother, "Stop it, you're hurting her." Katie's arms immediately fell, listening to Leah and not General Lane.
"I'm sorry, Solar Flare, did I tell you to stop."
"No, sir. But she did. You only asked me to weaken her and that is what I did, I will not stand by and watch you torture her."
Kara held tightly to Alex, "There is another way to save Hank."
"We are not releasing a combatant of this threat level."
Leah's heart beating loudly in her chest when the needle neared Astra's neck, "General, we are better than this!"
"We are. They aren't. Get them out of here!" Guards grabbed Leah, Katie, and Kara, Alex sadly having to help drag them out.
Leah grabbed hold of the door, crying out, "No, don't! Don't!" She screamed out, "Please, please! Please, no!"

Twisted Skies
After his master's death, Thurain leaves his rural home behind and travels to Heliana, the cramped city founded on the scientific progress of cultivation. Under a fake name, he aims to enter the Elemental Path Sect, the place of his master's death, to find both his killers, and closure. However, surrounded by the strange and horrible wonders of Heliana and its mixture of heroes and villains, his master's death is not the only murder he may have to solve. --- First attempt at a xianxia novel from me. To shake things up from the usual formula, the setting is more steam-punk than you might expect, and there are elements of murder mystery mixed in with the standard formula (though I'm not entirely sure yet how far to go with it.) I wrote this a while ago for NaNoWriMo, only posting it now for various reasons. Enjoy. Also, cover is highly temporary. I'll probably replace it with something nicer eventually.
