Katie glanced over at Winn as James and Lucy played the game. Her head fell back on the couch, while Winn's eyes kept going to his phone. Leah hadn't shown up yet, and Winn hadn't received a call yet.
"Okay! I absolutely hate the texture of this in my mouth."
"Eggplant!"
"Yes!" She pulled another card from the deck, "Oh! We've always wanted to go to this place!"
"Machu Picchu! Yes!"
"Yes! Uh, 'Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.'"
"The Godfather! Yes!"
"Yes. We had an amazing four hours at this one place in Cabo..."
"Time!" Kara interjected quickly, "Times up."
Winn glanced down at his phone as it buzzed, sighing in relief to Leah's response, "Guys, Leah is running a little late. She got caught up with her mom."
Katie moved her head slightly to look at Winn, "Thank God." She moved her head to notice that Kara was motioning for Winn to be her partner, so she just watched the couple try and horribly fail at Heads Up, "Time." Katie scratched the back of her head, "No points..."
Lucy moved forward, taking the last card, "Okay, I want to know what that last one was."
"Oh... don't-"
Lucy smiled, "Ooh, Superman. You should have just said Jimmy Olsen's special boyfriend." She moved to look at the group, "I met his cousins today, Supergirl and Captain Marvel."
"Wow." Kara says through a tight smile, "You... you did?"
"Yeah. I wasn't that impressed. It's like when you see a movie star in person and you're like, 'Is that it?' I guess that's it."
Katie and Winn glance at one another, looking down awkwardly, while Kara's jaw tensed as she gave James a large smile, "You guys ready to go home? I'm getting pretty tired."

Katie was stopped by Alex, "No, no."
"What?"
Alex put her hands on her hips, expression stern, "You're not going with us."
"Why? I'm a DEO agent now, aren't I? I went through the extensive-painful training, so why am I not allowed to see my friends fight some stupid robot the government created?"
"Because of Lucy Lane, she knows you. It could blow Kara and Leah's cover. So it's best if you just listen in." Alex handed her a com, "You should be able to hear what's happening."
"Thank you, Alex."
Leah and Kara glaze over at each other, then back at the Red Robots looking their way. "They're creepy looking right?"
Kara nodded, "Yeah, how was last night? I'm sorry I had to cut the game night before you could get there."

"Oh, it was fine. Winn and Katie brought me home to their apartment, a little awkward because of Katie, but she hid in her room the whole time and allowed us to watch Netflix and chill."
Kara's eyes widen, "D-do you know what Netflix and chill mean?"
"Yes, Kara, but less frick-frack more snick-snack."
Kara released a fit of giggles when the robot suddenly moved their way. One of them slammed right into Leah, making her release a loud groan. Leah flew up, using her freeze breath on the robot, but it had moved out of the way, it's arms began to swirl and create tornadoes causing Leah to slam hard into the floor. "Fuck!" She got up from her spot, wiping the dirt from her suit, "You know if this suit tears you owe me a new one!" She flew head first into the robot, her fists slamming down hard on the robot's chest, then she used her laser vision to make the robot fall on its knees, ceasing its movements. She stood up from the floor, wiping her lips as she turned to see how Kara was doing. "Supergirl." Her eyes widen when Kara is repeatedly beating the robot but it wasn't moving.
"Supergirl stand down that's enough."
"Supergirl!" Leah flew beside her cousin, "Supergirl." She grabbed hold of Kara's arms, "SUPERGIRL!" Kara stopped, suddenly the robot flew in the air and disappeared, "What did we say about controlling your anger?"
Kara held onto her cousin, helping her stand, "I-I'm sorry."
Alex came jogging out, checking the two blondes, "Are you two hurt at all?"
"I'm fine." Leah answers, "She's fine. We're fine."
The man came outside, yelling at Kara, "This is your fault!"
"You asked me to fight it!" She snaps back, "And Leah's is still here."
"Hers is no longer operational, the wires are fried, luckily it won't harm anyone, but your recklessness has unleashed an uncontrollable killing machine on National City. A billion dollar investment, eleven years of R&D, and what do we have? A paper weight. I want this thing found and destroyed before it turns National City into a war zone."
"Destroy it? You can't do that."
"The last thing the army needs is a bunch of wounded civilians on the 9:00 news."
"I've invested too much time and interest into this-"
"Into what?! Morrow." General Lane screamed, "The Red Tornado failed. And so did you. You're fired."
Leah opened her mouth, "General Lane, he worked hard for you and you're just firing him like that?"
"Yes, Captain Marvel, I am firing the worthless garbage that is this man. Do you understand me?"

Leah breathed in heavily, "I understand." She spat the last part, "Sir."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Katie sat in the office, typing on her computer as she did her work, her head snapped when she heard Kara yelling at Miss Grant.
"Don't talk to me like that! Please! I work so hard for you! I don't ask questions, I don't complain, and all you do is yell at me and tell me I'm not good enough. And it's mean! Why are you so mean?" Kara paused, covering her mouth in horror, "Oh, my God! I'm... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean that." She began to stammer, "I don't know what happened. I just snapped."
Miss Grant glared, pulling her phone when Katie's rang she jumped, "Y-yes Miss Grant?"
"Forward the phones."
Katie and Winn turn their heads when Kara is basically dragged out by Miss Grant. Winn rolled his seat closer to his sister, "What in the world was that?"
"Kara may have blown up on Miss Grant."
"May have?"
"Oh, that was a horrible idea." Leah strolled in, her hands stuffed into her pockets, "She's going to get my mother's two cents now."
"Everyone knows talking back to Miss Grant is a horrible idea." Katie mumbles, "Kara especially, what's been up with her lately?"
"I think has something to do with a certain photographer." Leah coughed, pulling at the collar of her shirt as her head tilted towards James' office. Winn rolled his eyes, going back to work, but Leah leaned over his shoulder, placing her chin on it, "Come on, you owe me ice cream and my mom is not going to care if I steal you."
Winn glanced over at his sister, not sure about leaving her alone to man the phones, "Well-"
"Go." Katie waved him off, reclining in the chair, "I'll be fine on my own, I promise not to accidently light anything on fire."
Winn grimaces, "Now I don't trust myself to leave you alone."
"Well, trust me." Leah tugged at his arm, giving him a small peck on the cheek, "We'll bring you back some ice cream, I'm assuming your brother knows your favorite."
"Any kind of sherbet except pineapple." Winn and Katie state at the same time, making Leah laugh.
"Siblings are great, wait till you meet my-" Leah stopped herself, she-herself-was not supposed to know about her older brother Adam, but she found out and would mail him every once in awhile without telling her mother. "L-Let's go."
Katie swirled in her hair, her head falling back on the seat as she gazed up at the ceiling, hearing her brother and Leah's footsteps walk away from her. She didn't mind the silence, not listening to her brother tap away endlessly at the keyboard, even though he always plays games instead of work. She lifted her arm up, looking at the metallic bracelet that was nulling her powers. It actually barely nulled them, if she got upset or anything with emotions her powers would just pop out to say hello. Suddenly a thought occurred in her head, she moved to her computer, searching up former employees under Harrison Wells, even though his projects tanked, he still had underlings, so she might as well search for them. She found one, so she called him up.
"Hello?"
"Hi, uh, why does the caller ID say Catco on it?"
"Oh." Katie turned red, "That's because I work at CatCo but that's beyond the point. I wanted to talk about the research you and Dr. Wells had down together on-"
"Mutants. Right, Dr. Wells was absolutely insane but he was not wrong about mutants. Why do you ask?"
"Let's just say, hypothetically, could he jumpstart a mutant who had no clue they had a mutation?"
"Of course, he had created a device that was meant to track the strongest mutant in the area, but he never let anyone near the device, and since his death, none of his former employees nor I know where it went."
Katie scratched the back of her head, thinking it might have been the device that blew up in the elevator, "If a mutant had a twin, would both have mutant powers?"
"Yes and no. Mutation happens within the cells of a person, so there can be a possibility that the twins will both have the exact same mutation, but it tends to only happen to one twin. Most mutations are very small, very small, so there is a slim chance that a person could develop a strong mutation."
Katie paused, she had literally lit a room on fire back at the DEO, "If a mutant did have, uh, powers-"
"Powers? Like the X-Men shit? Hold up, are you punking me? That's impossible."
Katie flinched when the call dropped, she tapped her fingers against the table, she decided to call up Vasquez, "Hey-"
"Katie, I told you not to call the DEO unless there was an emergency."
"It's not like there is any danger but I was wondering if you could somehow figure out what my blood was like before I found out I could light things on fire with my mind."
"Well, did you ever donate at all before you found out about your powers?"
"No, but a doctor took multiple vials of my blood to see why my periods aren't normal. Will that help?"
"How recent?"
"Last month."
"Then it's pretty helpful. I'll check on that, what is it you want me to look for?"
"Dark matter, in my older blood, I'm starting to think I might have had these powers for a long time, but they were you know, dormant."
"I'll check."

The journey has just begun, and the hardest step is always the first one. ~ This is my attempt at both the Xianxia/Wuxia and Portal/Isekai genre of fiction that I love, and the means to provide a story set in such guidelines, while distancing myself from some of the more common tropes. I do hope you enjoy the story I shall endeavor to tell. ~ Average post between 1000 - 3000 words. This is a work in progress, and will be edited and adjusted over time.
