《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 2

Katie tapped her fingers against her desk as she stared up at the news, a hard glare on the screen. She shook her head, "It's her first time really doing any of this."
"The people don't care."
"Miracle or menace? That's what the citizens of National City are asking themselves after the latest attempt at heroics by Supergirl left the bay facing an ecological disaster."
Katie stood when she noticed Kara walking into the room, "Kara!"
Winn quickly scrambled to her side, but recoiled in an instant, "Oh, God, is that smell you?"
"Three showers and I still reek of burning oil. I went from superhero to eco-terrorist in a single bound."
Katie releases a sigh, "Kara, hey, hey. You're just, like, a week into this superhero thing, you're going to make some mistakes."
Winn chuckles, "Like, when you first started working here and Cat asked you to get her lunch and you went to Chipotle."
Kara dropped her stuff on her desk, "Yeah, except now I'm making mistakes in front of the whole world."
"Forget about Supergirl's lack of experience, I'm talking about the trouble she'll bring to National City." The three look up at the screen, Katie rolling her eyes when she saw who was speaking, "Look at Metropolis. Since Superman's arrival, a veritable super bad guy war has been waged on that city. Their maintenance budgets have quadrupled. National City does not need Metropolis' problems."
"Who cares what that guy says?"
"You do." Katie and Kara state in unison, both giving Winn an annoyed expression.
Katie leaned against her desk, "Isn't Maxwell Lord your personal hero?"
"I own a couple Maxwell Lord watches and his biography." Winn shrugs.
"Mmhmm."
"And his... autobiography..."
"Yeah." Katie drags out, "Not a fanboy?"
"Shut up."
"She's here."
Winn nods, "Well, at least now I know how you do that."
Katie laughs, turning her attention to Kara, who was currently using her powers to heat up Miss Grant's coffee, "Kara."
Kara gave her a nervous smile, "It's fine." She quickly went over to Cat, "Here is your latte, Ms. Grant."
Katie messed with her fingers, watching as Cat drank her coffee, "It's hot."
"Just how you like it."
"A concern you didn't seem to share before today. Content meeting, two minutes, my office." She paused and faced Katie, "Kathy-"
"Katie."
Cat glared at her, "My office as well, you're a part of the meeting today."
Katie's eyes widen, "Really?"
"Yes, really, or I wouldn't be saying it."
Katie shared the enthusiastic smile with Kara, "Of course, yes, I-uh, thank you, Miss Grant."
Kara pulls at Katie's hand, bringing her into the office. Katie took in her surroundings, she wasn't in that room quite often, so she wanted to be familiar with the environment. She gaped at how many TVs were on the walls, there was probably twenty or more on the wall.
"We're all aware of Supergirl's latest debacle, yes?"
"She made sure no one will surf National City for the next 10,000 years. Some hero."
Katie glared at the man, and gave Kara a gentle rub on the back, hoping no one noticed the small transaction.
"It was the lead story on the Daily Planet homepage, their fifth in as many days. Which annoys me because the Daily Planet already has a go-to superhero, and now they're trying to steal mine." Cat began to walk around her desk to the back, "Now, when I branded her, there was an implicit promise that she would be, at a minimum, above average. But in the past week, she has proved herself to be... Oh, what is the opposite of super?"

"#Terriblegirl?"
"You know, Superman made plenty of mistakes when he first started. At least she's saving lives." Katie barks at the man but quickly stabilizes herself before she completely lashes out on the guy.
"In the sloppiest, most awkward way imaginable, Kristy." Katie lifted her hand up but decided not to correct Cat, "So it is left to us to take control of Supergirl's narrative. Save her from self-immolation, and scoop the Planet. I want an interview." Kara snickers, trying to cover it up, "Yes, Kaira."
"Sorry, sorry. I just... I just started to think about this kitten video I saw online earlier. It's so funny what they make those cats do. I'll send it to all of you." Kara paused, her mouth pursed, "Or not."
"James..." Cat turns her attention away from Kara, who became flustered and looked for Katie for help, "Perhaps your friend in blue would be useful in arranging a sit-down? Maybe you could broach the subject, the next time you 'Bro hang.'"
James chuckles, "It, uh, doesn't really work that way, Ms. Grant."
"Mm." Cat shakes her head, "Well, let me assure all of you, Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and all of the hags over at the Daily Planet are working day and night to get this exclusive. We need to get it first. I want a sit down with Supergirl. A girl to girl. And I want it by, um, the end of the week. Go, go. Go, go. Not you, Keira."
Katie stopped herself from leaving, facing Kara, "Kara."
"I'll be right out Katie."
Katie and James stood beside each other, waiting for Kara to leave the room, "She's not doing that interview, you know."
James sighs, "Yeah, I figured that."
Kara came walking out, not even stopping to let the two know to follow, "I am not doing that interview. No. I can't... I mean, I can't. Ms. Grant's not stupid. She'd recognize me in, like, one second."
James stopped her, "She will look at Supergirl right in the face and she will not even see her assistant."
Katie crossed her arms, "How can you be so sure? The only difference is her glasses, which is a very slim difference."
"Because she doesn't see her now." James answers, her turns back to Kara, "I watched it happen for years with your cousin. Why don't you think that people recognize him as Clark Kent?"
Kara glanced at Katie, "Reading glasses and a good slouch?"
"No, he's able to hide because the world can't believe that there's really a hero in their midst."
"Yeah, and I'm sure there's a good reason why my cousin keeps his job at The Daily Planet instead of flying around as Superman all the time, which would be so much easier."
James gave Kara a smile, "Yeah well, one, he's able to pay his rent."
Katie puffs her cheeks out, "You realize she's going to keep pressuring you about that interview."
"Oh, I can handle Cat Grant."
Kara began to play with her glasses, "I don't know... I don't know. I... I... Maybe I put the "S" on too soon."
Katie pat James' back, smiling, "You got this handled correctly?"
"Yeah, go."
"I'll talk with you later Kara."
Winn matches Katie's stride, "Where are you going?"
Katie raised an eyebrow, "My volunteer work, you know at the park gardens downtown?"
"Right, you and those stupid plants, why do you volunteer again?"

Katie messed with her sweater, her clothes very similar to Kara's, "Well, you know how... how dad used to buy me flowers when I was a kid?"
Winn's expression drops, he cleared his throat, "Hmm, yeah... I... uh, remember..."
"Yeah, it just makes me feel... closer to him, like when we were really young."
Winn shifted on his feet uncomfortably, "Okay... Uh, go to... gardens..."
Katie gave him a solemn smile, "I'll talk with you later."
♕~♕~♕~♕~♕
"I am so happy to have such a youthful and beautiful woman helping me with these gardens."
Katie patted at the soil, rubbing the sweat from her brow, "It's no problem Mrs. Lilywhite."
"Please, call me by my first name Alyssa."
"Then call me Katie."
"But your first name is beautiful, Katherine. Why would you ever want to shorten it?"
Katie gripped the soil in her palms, taking in a shaky breath, "I... My father always told me how beautiful my first name was, he loved calling me by my full name."
"Then wouldn't you want to embrace it?"
"My father is the Toyman." Katie states, noticing how Alyssa became tense at the name, "And seeing the way you reacted, allows me to know that you've heard of my father..."
Alyssa cleared her throat, "You're obviously not your father, so I have no right to judge you." She clapped her hands together as if to clear the tension, "How about we plant some poppies?"
"Thank you, Alyssa."
Alyssa plopped poppy flowers in her hands, "These can be planted by the entrance."
♕~♕~♕~♕~♕
Katie stared at the poppy flower on her desk that she kept, when Kara walked in, well, it looked like she had something shoved up her skirt. "Uh..." Katie scrunched her eyebrows together, "Why-"
"Don't ask."
Katie looked over at Winn as if to ask him, but he just gave her a shrug and continued to watch Kara struggle to walk into Cat's office. The twins grimace at attempt but turned away for privacy.
"Katie, why do you have a poppy flower on your desk, if Miss Grant sees that-"
"I know flowers aren't exactly her favorite, but it's very small one," Katie mumbles poking at the bright red petals.
Kara suddenly was next to them, causing both to jump, "Meet me in the alley in five minutes. Both of you."
"Thank God you didn't say the roof."
Katie smacked Winn in the chest, "Shush, she didn't seem too pleased."
"She just left Cat Grant's office, would you be pleased?"
Katie shrugged, "Well..." She paused, "Depending on what happens inside, possible pleasure, or possible despair."
"Don't say possible pleasure."
"Why does the alliteration bother you?" Katie questions, obviously knowing why he was uncomfortable hearing his twin sister say 'pleasure'. She checked her watch, "Let's head out now, by the time we get downstairs it would already pass five minutes."
"Well, we could-"
"Now, Winn."
"Yes, ma'am."
Katie pushed the doors open, staring at James, "Oh hey."
"Hey, are you-" James' eyes widened at the sight of Winn, "Hey, what's up?"
Winn glanced nervously at Katie, "Nothing, nothing." He clears his throat, "I... I like to come here when I smoke. Which I like to do in private..."
"Actually, I'm meeting someone right now so..." Katie stood quietly, just letting the scene unfold before her, she could stop it and explain that they all knew, but it was a lot funnier this way.
"Yeah, you can meet them inside the building. Yeah?"
"No, uh, my friend likes to make an entrance."
Kara landed in front of them, making both James and Winn point at one another, "He knows!?"
Katie laughed, "Yeah."
"James already knew. And Winn's my friend." Kara glanced at Katie, "And you both knew she knew... that I... Yeah."
"Yeah."
"If I'm going to be a hero, and prove to everyone that I know what I'm doing, I'm gonna need to practice. Start small, get better. And to do that, I'm gonna need your help."
"I'm in." Winn and James say in unison, making Katie cover her mouth to stop her laugh."
"I... I said it first."
"Boys." Katie sang, wrapping an arm around Kara, "You know I'm in."
♕~♕~♕~♕~♕
Katie typed at the computer in front of her, tapping her foot to the music on the radio when Kara's voice rang through the speakers.
"Okay, what do you have for me."
"Armed robbery at a pizza place on 5th and Siegel."
Katie leaned into the microphone, "Remember, bulletproof means the bullets bounce off. So, if you don't want anyone to get hurt, don't let the bad guys even get a shot off."
"Oh, yeah, and also try not to damage the suit." Katie and James turn to Winn with a raised eyebrow, "I, uh, helped make that outfit. I got some mad sewing skills."
"Winn, I made the suit." Katie states, "Stop."
"Okay."
'
"Next?"
"Ambulance caught in traffic on Donner Avenue carrying a heart attack victim. They're not gonna make it to National City General in time." Katie read off the paper.
Winn pops up adding, "Oh, and a fully-loaded ambulance is about 9,200 pounds, which would mean that you'd need to use a maximum of 44,498 newtons of force..."
James stopped him from continuing his sentence, "Kara, what he means is, gently this time."
'
"Supergirl rescued an ambulance stuck in traffic, saving the life of a man inside."
"Another super save for Supergirl."
"Looks like National City's hero is starting to live up to her name."
'
Winn laughed, "Oh! This one's the Fire Department. Ha! Kara, you're gonna love this one, it's a classic. Kitten up a tree."
Katie snorts, "Seriously."
Kara suddenly made a disgusted sound, "I thought you said it was a cat."
Katie tilted her head, "What?"
"It was a snake."
"Who names her snake Fluffy?"
'
"A dazzling display of heroics by the Girl of Steel now has a grateful National City asking, "What oil spill?" Watch out, Metropolis. Looks like we're about to give you a run for your superhero money!"
Kara turns chuckling, "I can't believe it. It's working. People are really starting to believe in her."
"In you."
"I couldn't have done it without you. Thank you." Kara blinked, "All of you."
Katie moved her head to look at the door when she heard a knock, "God, what, did you order more pizza? You're a beast."
Kara just went for the door, scaring James and Winn, but Katie just sipped her cup of coffee. "Kara? Kara, the cape. Your cape..."
Kara swung the door opened, her sister standing there, "Can we talk?"
Kara moved the door slightly so Alex could look in, shocked to see Kara's friends.
"Hey, Alex."
'
The next day Katie was suddenly pulled aside by Kara, "I need your opinion on something."
"Okay..." Katie dragged on, "What?"
"Miss Grant is going to fire James if he doesn't get that interview."
Katie nodded, "Okay... So?"
"What? You want James to get fired?"
"Of course not, but I don't see why you're so beat up about it."
"He's going to get fired," Kara repeated.
Katie sighs, "Yes, Kara, I heard you, but it's your choice to do that interview if you want to keep James around, then, do the interview. If not, then don't. It's a blank or blank choice Kara."
Kara looks down, biting her lip, "Okay, I'm going to do it. Wish me luck."
"You don't need luck." Katie laughs, patting her back, "You're super."
Kara pulls Katie in for a hug, "Thanks so much Katie."
"I just gave you advice."
"I know."
