《Killer Bay》The Final Countdown

"Adalet, I can't stop thinking about the look in Frank's eyes when he ran away... He seemed like a man who's got nothing left to lose..." Amy sighs as they climb up the last hill that would lead them to where Tesla's body was, "I just hope we can reach him before he does anything dangerous. I don't think Tesla will be easily beat-"

The women froze hearing the ringing sound of a gun going off not far from where they stood.

"Adalet, what... Was that a gunshot?! Oh my god, we must find Frank, NOW!" Amy declared a new urgency to her run.

"Right beside you, Amy!" Adalet says, grabbing her partner around the waist, "and we're taking a shortcut!"

"A shortcut? Wha- Oh my god we're flying!!" she shrieked as her feet came off the ground.

Adalet flew them up and over the last hill they had been climbing and came across a bone-chilling sight. They landed on a cliff that overlooked Pacific Bay and they could see a burning Innovation Valley from where they stood. The sky was dark with thick smoke billowing up from the fires in the distance, but the worst sight wasn't the one in the distance, it was the one just metres from where they landed.

Tied to some rusted metal poles that were sticking out of the ground was Frank. A rope was tied tight around his torso with his arms behind his back preventing him from running away. And on his forehead was a bleeding bullet wound with blood trickling down between his lifeless eyes.

"FRANK!!" Amy wailed, "Adalet, it's Frank! We need to untie him, he's hurt!"

Adalet didn't let go of her partner and held onto her tighter, "Amy, he's... Frank's gone, I can't hear his heartbeat..."

"No, NO! You're wrong, he's not dead!" she insisted, struggling against the iron tight grip the captain had on her.

"He's gone Amy..." she repeated as their legs gave out and they crashed to the ground, "I'm so sorry..."

"Oh Adalet," she sniffled, hugging the older woman, "I can't believe... I c-can't..."

"Capt. Adalet, didn't I tell you he was heading to his doom? Nobody can stop me!" Tesla's projection appeared before them, cackling with glee.

"You monster! How could you DO this?!" Amy roared, tears burning in her eyes.

"That impudent fool was a liability from the start! I always knew he'd betray me!" he spat, "so I freed five convicts from the Pacific Bay prison, and asked one of them to teach Frank that every decision has consequences..."

"You let criminals out?!" Adalet yells, letting go of Amy, "we won't let you get away with this, Tesla!"

"Well, I'm in a playing mood. I'll make you a deal, Capt. Adalet," Tesla offered, "find out who killed your partner, prove to me that justice still means something in this world, and I may abandon my virtual reality."

"You want us to play a game?!" she hissed.

"A very serious game. I'll stop the destruction of Pacific Bay while you investigate. But if you don't make headway fast enough, I may get bored..." he hums, glancing at the burning city in the distance.

"Your plan will backfire, Tesla!" Adalet glared, quickly scanning the area for clues, "see, I already found some clues! I'm sure that fridge hides a solid lead! And that camera may have filmed the murder!"

"Adalet will unlock it in a flash, you'll see!" Amy chimed in, standing up beside her partner, "you made a terrible mistake by killing one of our own, Tesla! We'll solve Frank's murder and bring you DOWN!"

Tesla's laughing face vanished from their sight, leaving them standing in front of the corpse of their partner and their new clues. Adalet got Amy to search through the rusted old fridge while she worked on the camcorder. The blonde searched through the assortment of old cans, bottles, jars, and boxes until she found a police badge with Frank's face in the centre of it.

"He kept it!" Amy cheered, waving the badge, "see, Frank was still a cop at heart!"

"And he wouldn't have thrown it into that fridge," Adalet says, punching in Frank's favourite passcode onto the camcorder's screen "the killer must have tried to hide this badge... Which means they touched it! Let's send it to the lab!"

"And you unlocked the camera you found at the crime scene, Adalet. I know I should rejoice but... I'm scared it'll have filmed Frank's murder!" she said, biting her lip with worry.

"We don't have a choice. The footage may contain a vital clue about his killer..." she reasoned, hovering her finger over the play button, "let's press play."

Amy sniffled as the recording turned to black, "...Oh Adalet, I thought the camera had filmed Frank's murder, but this is almost worse! Seeing him alive and well... But he knew, he knew what he was doing was dangerous! And he did it anyway!"

"Sometimes there's no other option..." Adalet sighed, "I wish there was but..."

"He made mistakes, but in the end, he tried to do the right thing, Adalet. And someone killed him for it! He said the Super Computer was nearby..." she muses, "and if we unplug the computer, we'll put a stop to Tesla's plans!"

Adalet flew several feet up into the air to get a better vantage point, "I can see a building over there! That must be it!"

"Let's go, Adalet, but be careful! Who knows what may be waiting for us!" Amy says as her partner landed beside her.

After Adalet had sent Frank's body and his police badge to the station for the team to analyze, Amy and she made their way down the hill to the small, bunker-like building Adalet had spotted at the base of the mountain. She broke down the door and they let themselves inside the small, one-room laboratory.

"Adalet, there's a... a man, strapped in that chair!" Amy gasped, pointing to the medical-style chair in the centre of the room.

There was an old and withered body strapped to the chair with a blanket draped across his lap. A bulky helmet was on his head with wires coming out of it going up to the ceiling and spreading out to connect to the computers around the room.

"He... doesn't look alive," Adalet breathed, she had to strain to hear the faintest sound of a heartbeat, but the sounds of the computer made it hard to pinpoint where the noise was coming from, "who could it be?!"

"Aw, don't you recognize me, Capt. Adalet? And I thought my body was so well preserved..." Tesla says with fake sadness, his head being projected from a projector in the ceiling.

"This is YOUR body?! But... you've been in this computer for over 50 years! Your body should have..." Amy waved her hands around trying to find the right word.

"Decayed?" he suggested, smirking, "no, I made sure it would stay alive. I can't completely separate myself from my human brain, you see. I still need this body as a vessel."

"Adalet, let's unplug the body from the computer!" she looked around for a power source, "then Tesla will just... stop existing, won't he?!"

"Now, that's not very sporting of you. I warn you, Capt. Adalet, if you so much as touch those wires, bombs will automatically detonate in Pacific Bay, killing everyone!" he warned, "why don't you go back to solving Frank's murder, instead? Remember, it's the only way you can make me reconsider sending everyone to my virtual world!"

With that, Tesla disappeared back into his digital world. Adalet took a look around the room and spotted a torn black card near an oil puddle on the floor, a piece of orange fabric at the foot of Tesla's body, and a dirty towel lying on top of some cables on the floor.

"Adalet, I can't believe we're being led around by a computer!" Amy fumed, "please tell me you found some clues!"

"Was there ever a doubt?" Adalet questions, collecting the clues off the floor.

"A torn card? Well, I'm sure you'll piece it back together in a flash. And that piece of orange fabric... It looks like some kind of name tag, but it's completely faded. Let's retrieve the missing text!" she said, looking at each clue, "but that towel... Is that a face imprinted in the mud?!"

"Yup!" she confirmed, "and hopefully it's enough to run through the database!"

"Wait, you really think that you can run this muddy face through the database and figure out who used this towel? See, Adalet, this is why we'll always win. You can outsmart anyone!" she praised.

Adalet repaired the torn card first. Grabbing some tape from off of a desk, she pieced together the black with white details card and read the name printed on it in gold.

"Erikah Mabayo, voodoo priestess," Adalet reads out loud.

"Wait, why does that name sound familiar?" Amy frowns in thought.

"Because Erikah Mabayo was the fake voodoo priestess who operated that brothel in the Bayou!" she remembered.

"But... you arrested her! After she killed Vanessa Kimmel!" she argued.

"She must be one of the convicts Tesla released from prison!" she guessed, "it's the only reason she could be here!"

"But how did he get her to come to the Wastes?" she wondered, "Adalet, we need to find Mabayo!"

"We still need to examine the other clues," Adalet pointed out, grabbing the towel.

"You really think you can use these computers to identify this muddy imprint of a face and find out who left it on that towel, Adalet?" Amy questioned.

"They still turn on, and this one is all set up for us to use the Pacific Bay DMV database," Adalet says, pointing to the computer screen displaying the start screen, "and this scanner should be able to upload an image of the impression on the towel!"

"Well, I guess you've managed the impossible more than once!" she replies.

Carefully placing the towel down on the scanner glass without smudging the impression, Adalet clicked on the button to begin the scan. Waiting several seconds for the scanner to finish, she submitted the image to the database to find a match. After comparing some of the features to potential matches the database generated, they soon had the identity of the unknown woman who had wiped her face with the towel.

"I can't believe you did it, Adalet! So the person who wiped her face with that muddy towel and left it in the computer lab was Greta Meduse!" Amy says as she reads the results displayed on the monitor, "wait, isn't she that horrible woman from Innovation Valley who killed her own daughter because she was jealous of her youth?!"

"And who called me old..." Adalet mumbled under her breath, "at least we know she's another one of the convicts Tesla released from prison! Let's track Greta down and interrogate her, Amy!"

With just the piece of orange fabric left to analyze, Adalet grabbed a powder kit from her pocket dimension and dusted the white label stitched on the fabric. After shaking off the excess powder, they could read the name and identification number printed on the label.

"Derek Stone," and there's what looks like a prison inmate number!" Adalet reports.

"Do we know any convicts named Derek Stone?" Amy inquired.

"We do!" she confirmed, "I arrested Derek Stone back in Ocean Shore! He froze a girl to death with liquid nitrogen! Frank had been trying to lock him up for years without success..."

"Until you arrived! What if Tesla got him to settle the score?!" she suggested, "we need to find Derek, now!"

Leaving the laboratory, Adalet and Amy began looking around no man's land for the three escaped convicts. Thankfully being in the Wastes made it easier for Adalet to look around, and she'd suffer through the headaches she got to locate the three killers. She found Erikah first near an algae-filled river, then she saw Greta on top of one of the higher hills, and lastly Derek was sneaking around one of the abandoned buildings looking for who knows what. Pulling their weapons out they headed to the river to interrogate Erikah Mabayo about her presence in the Wastes.

"Mabayo!" Adalet yells once they were within feet of the priestess, "what are you doing in the Wastes? What were you promised in exchange for coming to such a dangerous place?!"

"Capt. Adalet, what a serendipitous encounter! You, too, sensed that all the evil in Pacific Bay was coming from this wretched place?" Erikah inquires, holding her hands to the sky.

"Don't try your mumbo-jumbo on us, Mabayo. We know you're a fraud!" Amy spat.

"I WAS a fraud, but no more. My mind has awoken to the other world! A floating spirit came to me from the prison's TV screen, and told me I would find forgiveness in the Wastes!" she proclaimed, happily.

"A floating spirit came from a TV screen? Did it happen to look like a giant, blue, floating head?" Adalet asks, not impressed in the least.

"Yes!" Erikah confirmed, "the spirit answered my prayers and freed me! And I came here to do its bidding!"

"Do its bidding? Did that include killing an officer of the law? Speak up!" she ordered.

"I did not kill anyone! I celebrate life and all that is good! The spirits have soothed my soul!" she insists, genuinely shocked by the accusation.

"Well, you'll be able to celebrate life confined in a bunker, Mabayo! You're under temporary arrest until we can take you back to prison!" Adalet announced, getting a pair of cuffs out of her utility belt.

After bringing Erikah to the laboratory and finding a small storage room they could lock her inside of, they headed up to the hilltop to interrogate Greta Meduse about why she was in the Wastes.

"Greta Meduse, why did you come to the Wastes?! It can't have been to give yourself a mud facial!" Adalet deadpanned, holding up the dirty towel.

"Why ask, if you already have the answer?" Greta smirked, "of course, I came here for the mud!"

"You really think we're going to believe that?! Not only is the city in chaos," Amy gestured to the smouldering landscape, "but this entire place is radioactive! No one in their right mind would touch that dirt!"

"You're wrong. I read about the Wastes' special anti-aging mud on the Internet! It's supposed to do wonders for your skin! So when I realized my cell door had been left unlocked, I slipped out and came straight here! What do you think? Do I look younger already?" she struck several poses to show off her face.

"You're... You're insane! Your quest for eternal youth has driven you crazy!" Amy cried, "come on, Adalet, let's lock her up in the bunker and move on!"

Repeating the process with Greta as they had with Erikah, they cuffed her and found another usable room for them to lock her inside of. With the two women locked up in the bunker, they headed outside to question Derek Stone about how he had gotten into the Wastes.

"Yo, Capt. Adalet! Long time no see!" Derek smiles, seeing the cops, "you looking to bring justice to the Wastes?"

"Actually, we're seeking justice. Our partner, Frank Knight, was shot point-blank! Execution style!" Adalet informed the escaped convict.

"Old Frankie's dead?! Ah, what a shame!" he complained, still smiling, "I'd been looking forward to killing him myself!"

"Is that why you escaped prison and came to the Wastes? Tesla asked you to kill Frank?!" Amy demanded.

"Who's this "Tesla" dude? Nah, I ended up here because it's the only place that's not burning to the ground right now!" Derek explained.

"Well, you'll be extra-safe in a cell! Raise your hands so I can handcuff you!" the blonde orders.

He scoffed, "you and what army? There's no law around here! You've got no authority to arrest anyone! Now if you don't mind, I'll go watch the city burn!"

"Good thing Far lent the team his communicator, I don't think the radio or our cell phones could get through all this radiation and smoke," Adalet says, putting through the request for a video call to Heimdall's communicator.

"We're long past saving them for emergencies," Amy agrees as the call was answered by the team.

The hologram screen displayed their office back at the station with Roxie and Yann sitting at the desk in front of their communicator and the rest of the team working in the background. Everyone had tears in their eyes and the coroner was already glaring at them.

Amy gulps at the intense glare Roxie was giving them, "Roxie? Did you... Are you done with... with Frank?"

"I can't believe you sent his body to me, Adalet! How could you?!" Roxie wailed, making Yann flinch because of the loud volume, "Frank... Frank was my drinking buddy! Him betraying us was bad, but at least he was still alive!"

"I know... It's just so weird to think that he'll never grumble about work again..." she choked a sob, Adalet wrapped her free arm around her partner, "but we must be strong, Roxie! Do you have anything that could help Adalet catch his killer!"

"Well, the... the killer shot him right between the eyes with a .22-caliber pistol... I trust you'll find the actual weapon soon," she accepted a tissue from Yann to wipe her eyes, "that coward tied him up before firing, but that was their downfall! They left traces of pork gelatin and sodium nitrite on Frank's arms! As horrible as it sounds, these are components of canned meat... Fresh food being in short supply in the Wastes, the killer probably carries rations."

"So the killer eats canned meat? Well they'll soon..." she sighs, "no, I don't feel like making a pun."

"Yeah, I didn't feel like it either. Adalet, promise me that you'll bring Frank's killer to justice, no matter what!" Roxie pleaded, "we're counting on you!"

"We will, Roxie, even if it's the last thing we do!" Adalet vowed.

Roxie nods in thanks before excusing herself from the desk, leaving Yann alone to give his report.

"Adalet, how are you holding up?" Yann inquires, wiping at his eyes with his thumb, "everyone here's devastated... but we're pulling together to help you catch Frank's killer!"

"Well manage, Yann," Adalet answered, "were you able to look at Frank's badge?"

"I had a look at his badge... No fingerprints, but I did find a white powdery substance stuck in the crevices!" he held up a dish containing the sample for them to see, "turns out it's a mix of various energy pills. Whoever your killer is, they're desperate not to fall asleep!"

"Well, they'll need more than energy pills to stay ahead of Adalet after what they did to Frank, you can bet on that!" Amy proclaimed.

"Adalet, this must be a nightmare! I didn't think Tesla was serious when he said he'd freed five convicts from prison!" Amy exclaimed, "but so far, we've already bumped into Mabayo, Greta, and even Derek Stone! And there must be two more loose in the Wates!"

"And who knows who else he freed from prison!" Adalet crossed her arms, "or what other criminals could be running free around the rest of Pacific Bay!"

"So, how are you finding my little game so far, Capt. Adalet?" Tesla inquires, floating beside his body.

"You're insane, Tesla!" she yells, enraged, "you talk about creating a world free of crime, but every single one of your actions goes against that!"
