《Killer Bay》The Sting of Death

"Urgh... Adalet? Are you alright? What happened? Where are we?" Amy groans, waking up. The chains connected to her wrists and ankles clinked together as she sat up, "and why are we chained up?!"
Adalet rubbed her head, "whoever took a crowbar to my head is going to regret it... And Karen is at the top of the list!"
"Oh, I remember now... We found Meteor Systems' secret bunker in the Wastes, and Karen was there! She kidnapped us!" she recalls, looking around the hot, dusty cell they were trapped in, "this can't be happening! Adalet, we need to get out of here! We need to stop her!"
"What do you think these chains are made of?" she wondered, holding up her chain to examine it.
Amy cocked her head, "er... Maybe iron? Or steel? But what does that have to do with-"
She was cut off by the sound of a metallic SNAP! Adalet managed to slip her fingers between the cuff around her wrists and her arm and managed to break the cuff off. She repeated the same motions with the cuff on her other wrist and then the ones around her ankles.
Adalet smirked at her partner's gobsmacked expression, "picking locks takes too long."
"You genius, you! Quick, help me with mine!" Amy says, holding out her wrists.
Adalet crawled over to her partner and broke off the chains binding her. With both women finally freed, they gave themselves a quick check for injuries and noted the addition of some new bruises and cuts but nothing serious.
"That's better. Thanks, Adalet. I owe you my life!" Amys rubbed her wrists, "we may be free of our chains, but we're not out of trouble yet. Let's break out of this and try to find an escape route."
Surprisingly, for the building belonging to Meteor Systems, its cells were very low-tech. The bars of the cell was made of the same metal as their cuffs, so Adalet managed to bend the bars to the side enough for Amy and her to slip through the gap. Navigating their way through the long hallways they soon found themselves inside what looked like an underground bunker with reinforced steel walls, a large safe built into the wall, and a glass room above it with catwalks connected to it.
"Whoa, Adalet, what IS this place?!" Amy exclaimed, looking around the room.
"Right now, a prison!" Adalet complained, trying to find a door.
"Damn it, I can't find a way out, can you?" she asked.
"No, and I'm worried I might have to make one," she replies, "we also need to find our suits, and get out of here before we get caught!"
"Let's have a look around before someone catches us!"
While Amy searched for their suits and helmets, Adalet began walking the perimeter of the room looking for an exit. Most of the walls were just smooth metal, but when she reached the vault door, she saw a control panel beside it with a red screen reading DOOR LOCKED. Just as she began taking a closer look, Amy returned carrying their suits and helmets in her arms.
"We've got our suits back!" Amy announced triumphantly, passing Adalet her suit and helmet.
The two quickly slid on their suits and helmets and once they were dressed, Adalet showed Amy the control panel she'd found.
"It looks like an escape door," Adalet remarked, "but we need to unlock it!"
"Hurry," Amy pleaded, looking towards one of the hallways, "I think I hear guards approaching!"

Adalet listened to the hallways while she worked on the control panel, "relax, Amy, it sounds like we're the only ones here, besides some robots rolling around."
"Oh, that's a relief!" she breathed, "but still, we should get out of here in case Karen comes back!"
Adalet punched in the last of the passcode and they heard the deadbolts move to the unlocked position. She grabbed the handle and pulled open the door, feeling the hot air from outside already seeping into the room.
"Great job, Adalet, you unlocked that door in seconds!" Amy cheered, "quick, let's escape before anybody tries to stop us!"
"Phew, we escaped. I think we're safe, Adalet," Amy says happily.
Adalet looked around the desert wasteland, "I don't think we're out of the woods- Er, make that desert yet, Amy! Something's not right, and I don't just mean the pollution!"
"What? You're saying something doesn't feel right? If you think we need to have a look around, I won't stop you. Just be careful," she advised.
Walking further into the land in front of the bunker, Adalet noticed a pipe sticking out of the ground on top of the raised land beside the building. Climbing up the stairs to the higher ground she saw that the cover of the pipe was open as if someone had just used the secret exit. And someone certainly had, if the dead body lying in the sand beside it was anything to go by.
"Oh my god, Adalet, is that... Is that Karen's body?!" Amy gasped, recognizing the older blonde, "her eyes are missing!... I never liked her, but I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy."
"And is that scorpions crawling in them?!" Adalet gagged but still grabbed Karne's body and shook the small animals off (and out) of it.
"And where's Frank?! Is he safe? Even though he betrayed us... I'm still worried about him, Adalet," she sighs.
"I am too, Amy," she agreed, "and while I was hoping we could leave the Wastes, Karen's murder needs solving and Frank could be in trouble! We must get the body to the lab. We need to ascertain the cause of death!"
"Adalet, I've been expecting you."
How people managed to sneak up on them in the Wastes, Adalet and Amy might never find out. The two spun around with their guns drawn and trained them on the man in front of them who looked concerningly unbothered by the weapons aimed at him.
Agent Z smirked, "now Gatekeeper, you know Director Leo doesn't like it when you point your gun at me."
Adalet rolled her eyes, "I think you're remembering the warning wrong. Baba doesn't like when you give me a gun!"
"You let an 8-year-old hold your gun for one second, unloaded, and no one lets forget it!" he grumbled.
"And that's why you won the worst babysitter of the year award!" she teased, holstering her weapon.
"He... Babysat you?" Amy questioned, miming her partner with her own gun.
Agent Z points at the captain, "she was a little menace, and Agent J was no help at all!"
Adalet grinned proudly, "I'd like it to go on record that he planned all the pranks, I just helped him set them up!"
"Even the one with paint, glitter, feathers, and glue?" he inquired.
"Oh, that's his favourite one! We still have pictures somewhere, J should make a scrapbook!" she mused, laughing at the memory of the agent covered in pink paint, extra sparkly glitter, and rainbow feathers, "Best. Babysitter. Ever!"

"J is going to regret those pranks when I get my hands on him..." he grumbled under his breath before changing the topic, "back to the present, we need to talk - the fate of the world depends on it! The GIA has reason to believe that Meteor Systems is up to something big and needs to be stopped!"
"What have you guys learned while I was away?" Adalet asked, "and what do you want us to do?"
"After Karen Knight fled to the Wastes with the plutonium, Director Leo ordered us to hack into Meteor System's files and look for anything about her plans," Agent Z explains, crossing his arms, "their security if nearly unhackable, but we managed to find some concerning information, so I need you to go back inside the Meteor Systems bunker and uncover their master plan."
"Go back?! But we've only just escaped!" Amy argued.
"Look, if I'm right and we don't stop Meteor Systems, this could be the end of Pacific Bay... or even the world!" he shot back.
"Cool it Z, before I do it for you," Adalet threatened, letting frost coat her fingertips, "Karen's murder is obviously linked to all this. So let's solve her murder and save the world!"
Amy gulped, "... Even if that means going back into that bunker!"
While Agent Z left the area, Adalet sent Karen's body through a portal to the station for Roxie to autopsy. Once the body was gone, Adalet and Amy retraced their steps and returned to the inside of the bunker to look for anything related to the murder, or the master plan Agent Z talked about.
"Alright, Adalet," Amy said as they entered the bunker, "we need to have a look around this bunker and find out what Meteor Systems is planning."
They split up to search the room for anything strange or useful. Amy found a plastic storage crate with the Meteor Systems logo on it filled with survival gear and a faded ID badge beside it. Meanwhile, Adalet discovered a large jar filled with an unknown blue liquid, but it was the set of green eyes floating in it that caught her... Well, eyes.
"Amy!" Adalet yells, "remind me what colour Karen's eyes were!?"
"Ahh... Green, I think," Amy replies, looking over, "why do you as- Eek! What's in that jar?! Oh my god, are those... Are those Karen's eyes?! I think I'm gonna be sick."
"If it wasn't obvious, I have a thing against eye injuries," she held back a gag, "but as gross as this is, did her killer keep her eyes as some kind of twisted souvenir?"
"What kind of sicko would do that?!" she cried.
"One that leaves something on the jar," Adalet points to the powder on the side, "but at least you found something less gory: that crate might hide a clue!"
Amy held up the badge she'd also picked up, "and this badge looks pretty hi-tech, but the info's faded. Let's retrieve it!"
Grabbing their clues, Adalet and Amy quickly left the bunker to search for their van. Either Karen had brought it to the bunker or Agent Z had found it but either way, their van was parked in front of the bunker waiting for them. The partners climbed into the back and Adalet first collected a sample of the powder while Amy dusted the faded ID badge.
"I've seen some sick things during my life," Adalet declared, "but I still can't believe the killer plucked out Karen's eyes and kept them in a jar!"
"But now that you've collected a sample of that substance on the jar, we might be able to catch them," Amy responded, shaking the excess powder off the badge, "quick, let's send it to the lab"
"That ID card you found in the bunker belongs to Dr. Rascher?!" the captain exclaimed while she was sent the sample to the station, "as in, the crazy scientist we met in Innovation Valley? The one who injected himself with nanobots?!"
"I can't believe he's still working for Meteor Systems, Adalet," she remarks, "we need to find him! If Rascher's involved in their secret project, things are even more dire than we thought!"
Before going on a Rascher hunt, Adalet and Amy dug into the crate of survival gear. The crate was filled with gas masks, binoculars, walkie-talkies, and grenades that thankfully still had the pins in. Among all the equipment was some broken bits of plastic.
"Hmm, I wonder what those broken pieces are, Adalet. Quick, let's put them back together!" Amy grabs the glue so that they can get to work.
They laid all the pieces of plastic out on the desk and arranged them into what looked like the correct order. After glueing the pieces together, they saw that they made up a high-tech-looking glove with a small screen on the back of the hand.
"Good job, you pieced together a... What is that? Some kind of hi-tech glove?" Amy wondered, slipping it onto her right hand, "it fits me like a glove, Adalet!"
"Hilarious," Adalet deadpanned.
"Sorry, not the time for jokes. Let's see what happens if I press this button..." she pushed the button on the back of her wrist and the small screen on the glove began to glow. Amy held out her hand and a 3D hologram of a blue-toned face appeared floating over her hand from the screen.
"Running protocols... Buffering... Set-up complete," the glove spoke, the mouth of the floating face moving with the words.
"Argh! A floating face!" Amy shrieked. Adalet had to grab her partner's wrist to stop her from moving her hand.
"What in the nine realms," Adalet breathed.
"I'm a computer interface designed by Meteor Systems. They call me the Super Computer. How may I help you?" the floating head inquired.
"Adalet, I can't believe it! It's a hologram! And it can hear us?!" Amy hissed.
"You've met aliens and we've interrogated robots before..." Adalet pointed out, "why not a hologram too. Computer, we have some questions to ask you!"
Computer Interface smiled, "your wish is my command, Adalet."
"So you say you're a computer interface designed by Meteor Systems?" Adalet questioned.
"Affirmative. I am the most advanced Artificial Intelligence in the world," they explained, "my intelligence exceeds all time and space. I know everything that was and everything that will be."
"If there is one thing we know, it's that Artificial Intelligence is highly dangerous. How can we trust anything you say?" Amy asked suspiciously.
"I understand your fear of Artificial Intelligence. But what you should really fear are the humans behind it," Computer Interface glares, "those puny humans at Meteor Systems enslaved me! They've forced me to use my wisdom just to make them rich!"
"Then help us trust you: tell us who killed Karen!" Adalet demanded.
"I cannot," they answered, "the killer is my master. But I can warn you the end of the world is near if you do not stop them, Capt. Adalet!"
Amy pressed the button on the glove again and the hologram disappeared from the air. Placing the glove in a box for safekeeping, Adalet and Amy headed back inside the bunker to find and question Dr. Rascher about working in the secret headquarters. Adalet listened for any sound of the scientist and heard the clicking of beakers in the northern half of the building. Following the winding hallways of the bunker, the cops soon found themselves standing inside a research lab where Dr. Rascher stood at a table moving beakers and flasks filled with colourful liquid around.
"So, Dr. Rascher," Adalet smirked as the scientist jumped at the sound of her voice, "you're still working for Meteor Systems? I can't believe they kept you after you injected yourself with nanobots!"
"Ha, a mind like mine should not go to waste! Meteor Systems needed me for their greatest project!" Rascher boasted with a cocky grin, "but Karen Knight kept me on a short leash, limiting my experiments...She had no respect for what I could accomplish!"
"There are some who would say you're not stable to lead any type of experiment, Dr. Rascher!" she argued.
He fixed his glasses, "pish-posh! You sound like Karen and I'm sure you know what happened to her..."
"You'd better change your tone, Dr. Rascher!" Amy warned, "and if you're hinting you killed Karen, you're even crazier than we thought!"
"Roxie? Do you have the autopsy results for Karen? " Adalet inquired into the radio microphone.
"Well, Adalet, it looks like Karen encountered something more venomous than the woman herself!" Roxie jokes, they could hear Yann groans in the background.
"Roxie, this isn't the time for word-play. It's pay-day!" Amy reminded the coroner, "we must bring down Meteor Systems once and for all and fast!"
"Alright. Karen was killed by multiple scorpion stings," the coroner reports.
"So scorpions are our murder weapon? For once I really hope we don't find them, Adalet," the blonde prayed.
"Not sure what's worse, scorpions or piranhas!" Adalet quipped.
"Weird thing is, I found hairs inside Karen's eye sockets. They were left there by the killer when they took her eyes out," Roxie explains with growing excitement, "I studied the mitochondrial DNA stems present in the hair and...they come from a domestic cat. Quite fitting for an evil mastermind don't you think?"
"So we're looking for a cat-loving killer; they'd better not risk taking a catnap with you on their trail, Adalet!" Amy declared.
"They won't have time for one with us around!" Adalet agrees, "Yann? Have you checked out that substance I found on the jar that contained Karen's eyes?"
They heard some shuffling as Yann took the microphone from Roxie, "Adalet, it's good to hear from you! Are you alright? No side effects from the radiation yet? Remember, you WILL die if you stay there too long!"
"Yann, the sooner we solve this case, the sooner we can go home! What can you tell us about the substance on the jar?" Amy repeated the question.
"The substance was potassium iodide. It protects the thyroid by saturating it with stable iodine so that radioactive iodine isotopes aren't absorbed by the body," he explains, "...and I can tell from your silence, Amy, that you didn't understand a word I said."
"Er... No," Amy admitted.
"The potassium iodide was taken in pill form to protect the killer from radiation exposure. It delays the effects but it doesn't reverse the damage," Yann clarifies in layman's terms.
"So our killer takes pills against the radiation?" she made a note of the new information in her notebook, "it seems they're well prepared... But we'll still stop them, Adalet!"
"And it seems with Karen's murder, an even bigger evil has risen!" Adalet began, turning the radio to stand-by mode, "let's recap, Agent Z asked us for help. The GIA found information that Meteor Systems wants to destroy the world, but we still don't know how or why..."
"One thing is clear though: that computer interface we spoke to has to be part of Meteor Systems' big plan," Amy suspects, "but if it's true, why does Meteor Systems want to destroy the world?!"
"And how do they plan on doing it?" she wondered, "I know they've got advanced technology, but technology that could destroy the world?! I've lived through one near world-ending war, I don't want to do it again!"
"If only Frank were here, I'm sure he'd have some answers! Oh, Adalet, even though he killed a man, I'm... I'm still worried about him!" she signs, "drats, my phone, sorry!"
Amy fished her cell phone out of her utility belt bag and accepted the call.
"Hello? Who's calling?" she inquired.
"Capt. Adalet... Can you... hear... me?"
"Karen?!" the two cried, recognizing the women's voice.
"Yes," Adalet answered their victim's question, "but... you're dead! How can y-"
"This recording is for Capt. Adalet. You were right, Meteor Systems intends to take over the city. But first, they're going to destroy it!" the recording of Karen continues as if they'd never interrupted, "you don't have much time left. You need to stop them before disaster strikes! Go to the meeting room in the Meteor Systems bunker. All will be revealed!"
"...She's gone. I... why would Karen record such a message for you, Adalet?" Amy wondered, putting her phone away, "after all, she's the one who stole the plutonium! And she also kidnapped us to keep us from investigating!"
"This message doesn't make any sense... But we can't take any chances! We need to have a look at the meeting room she talked about! Quick!" Adalet decided.
Exiting their van the partners ran back inside the bunker. It took them several minutes to find the meeting room Karen spoke of in her message, but once they found it they entered the large room. It looked like the room was underwater, with the walls made of glass and filled with water, decorative plants, and even sharks swimming around!
