《Crossing Boundaries| Bellamy Blake》3| Speaking Up

The Grounder could see Clarke was angry. She was angry at the long haired boy for siding with Bellamy and not valuing Jasper's life. Clarke held up the moss and red leaf that the Tree Woman used for Jasper. She began to examine it. "Whatever this stuff is, it has to have had antibiotic properties." Wells hovered over Clarke.

"Let me take a look at that." Clarke looked up at Wells annoyed. "Before you refuse my help, remember who aced botany in Earth Skills." Wells said. Clarke placed the red leaf in Wells hands.

"The Grounders used it as a poultice. I'm thinking a tea might be even more effective if we can figure out what it is." Clarke stated.

"I know what it is. Seaweed. Look..." Wells showed Clarke the red leaf. "no root structure."

"Right. Well, then there must be a water source nearby." Clarke stated. The trio began to talk about the possible location of where they could find it, eventually deciding it would be best to go together to find the red seaweed.

The Grounder was left alone with Jasper's continuous groans, soon after, Octavia climbed up the shaft and sat at Jasper's side trying to find a way to help dull his pain. Octavia paid the Grounder no mind as she watched Octavia brush Jasper's damp hair away from his face. It reminded the woman of when she would do the same thing every time her siblings were sick; scared that it would be the last time she saw them. She'd brush his growing dark hair away from eyes and she would see the small, fragile smile form on his lips.

The woman's thoughts were quickly disrupted when the sound of the fog horn blared in the distance. With wide eyes, the woman began to panic; they needed to close the floor shaft so the fog wouldn't enter above! Octavia's attention moved to the struggling Grounder on the floor as she tried to move closer to the floor shaft. Her back on the floor, the Grounder raised her bounded feet and tried to kick the shaft down, but Octavia had immediately stopped her. "What are you doing? What's happening?"

"Acid fog." Octavia's eyes widen as the Grounder had just spoken in English. She understood them. The woman ignored Octavia's revelation and, again, tried kicking the shaft down. "Octavia, you need to-" The woman was interrupted by the coughing and stomping of many people on the floor below.

"Everybody get in!" Someone shouted below. Octavia rushed down the shaft.

"What's going on?" The woman could hear Monty ask.

"The air got thick, everybody's skin started burning."

"Monty, my brother's out there." Octavia said.

"He'll be fine. We'll all be fine." he reassured her. The woman continued to hear the sound of people's feet stomping and coughing as they hurried into the containment before they closed it shut.

Octavia climb back up the shaft and looked down at the woman, who had managed to wiggle her way to the floor door. Octavia dragged the Grounder back against the wall, sat her up and curiously sat across her. The women could see the clear eagerness in Octavia's eyes which slightly worried her. "You spoke up. You spoke English!" Octavia stated to the woman. The woman quickly shook her head, trying to get Octavia to speak lower. "Can all Grounders speak English?" Octavia asked in a more hushed voice.

"No and you cannot tell anyone I speak English. Do you understand?"

"Why?" The Grounder remained silent. "You tried to kill Jasper."

"I tried to save Jasper." The Grounder corrected.

"Even if that were true, you still hung him up for bait." Octavia argued.

"Fine, but I wasn't going to let the beast kill him, we were only using him to lure the beast for hunt, and then I was going to take Jasper to a healer, but your people came a lot quick than I thought they would." Octavia looked at the Grounder. "Please?" She never meant any harm, she was just trying to survive. Right? The woman watched Octavia stand up and once again, sit by Jasper's side.

"Your secret's safe....for now."

"Thank you."

As time went on, the woman's eyes soon became heavy and she let herself fall asleep. She jolted awake when she heard loud, panicky steps racing up the ladder. "Murphy's going to kill Jasper!" Monty shouted. Both, he and Octavia hurry to close the shaft but Murphy was on Monty's tail. Octavia kicked him buying them a few more seconds so they could close the shaft down completely. "It locks on the other side." Monty said sitting on the shaft.

"Don't let him in!" Octavia rushed to look for something to hold the door down with. They could hear Murphy's threats through the shaft as he continued to try to break through it. The woman laid down on her back and began to kick at a pipe. Octavia quickly caught on to what the woman was doing and tried to pull at the pipe.

"No rush. I'm fine here." With one last kick and pull, the pipe came lose.

"I got it! Move it!" Octavia shoved the pipe between the shaft handle and the ladder. Both, Monty and Octavia gasped for air.

"Thank you." Monty said to the Grounder but the woman didn't respond. She only sat herself upright, made herself comfortable and closed her eyes back asleep.

When the woman woke up, she saw Octavia tear stained face and her eyes puffy and knew someone had died. "I'm sorry." The woman whispered to her. Octavia snuffled and wiped her tears away.

"It's not your fault." She said as Octavia played with Jasper's hair.

Shortly after, Clarke climbed up the ladder with warm red seaweed tea for Jasper. She scooped her hand under Jasper's neck helping him drink the tea. "I'm really sorry about Atom." Clarke said to Octavia.

"Guess we're gonna have to get used to people dying down here, aren't we?" Octavia focused her attention on Jasper. "But not you. You hear me? You're not allowed to die."

Clarke gave Octavia a sympathetic look before walking over to the Grounder. Clarke crouched down in front her and she offered her some of Jasper's left over tea. "Drink." She took a sip and handed it to the Grounder. Clarke hoped she would take it; it could prevent her shoulder from becoming infected.

The Grounder leaned her head forward drinking some of the tea "Octavia can you get me a wet rag?" Clarke said. Octavia scurried across the room to wring out wet rag. "I'm gonna clean your shoulder." Clarke stated as she demonstrated cleaning her shoulder on herself. She carefully peeled away the Grounder's jacket from her right shoulder. The woman closed her eyes and breathed calmly from the detachment of her jacket. The dry blood had attached itself between her skin and the jacket. "Sorry."

"Here." Octavia handed Clarke a damp clothe.

Clarke dabbed away the dry blood from the woman's arm until the wound was completely clean. The Grounder was lucky the bullet hadn't done any serious damage. A small flesh wound but a wound nonetheless. If it was a complete gunshot wound, she could've lost all mobility in her right arm but now. Clarke saw the black lines on her shoulder. She counted 23 black lines. Clarke thought it's better not to ask. "Hey, I have to stitch up the wound but I left them on the first floor of the Dropship, so I'll be back." She told Octavia so she could keep an eye on the Grounder.

Clarke went to go retrieve her medical supplies from the first floor. The woman didn't understand why Clarke was healing her. Her people wouldn't heal a hostage; they would leave them as they were, or worse, inflict more pain to extract information. But, that's not what Clarke's doing, at least, not right now.

Octavia saw the stern yet slightly confused look on the woman's face. "Clarke means well. She doesn't like seeing people hurt." Octavia stated. They both became silent when they heard Clarke climbing up the ladder.

"This might hurt a little." Clarke warned before sticking the needle in the woman's tanned skin and stitching the flesh wound back together. She angled the woman around to stitch her up properly. Clarke was surprised as the woman hadn't flinched or made a single sound as she stitched her up. Once she was finished, Clarke taped a gauze on the wound and left her to stare at the metallic walls.

"Hey!" Someone had firmly nudged at the woman's side. Her eyes slightly cracked open but then closed again. "Wake up!" The voice harshly hissed. The woman refused to wake up, and as a result, a cupful of water was thrown at her face. She let out a large gasp and had a furious face. The woman fought against the rope that held her in place and prevented her from attacking whoever threw the water, before realizing Octavia had thrown it. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Octavia crouched down in front of her, watching black streaks, from her face paint, run down the woman's face.

"What the hell is your problem?" the Grounder growled at Octavia.

"Look, I need to know if you knew anything about Wells getting killed?"

"What? What are you talking about, I've been here the entire time." She defended herself.

"Someone killed Wells last night and Bellamy thinks a Grounder did it trying to get revenge for keeping you hostage."

"They left his body there?" Octavia nodded. "No, my people wouldn't do that. They would have taken Wells first before killing him. How was he killed?" Octavia nodded understanding.

"I don't know, Clarke wouldn't really say. But, your people, they would have wanted information on us. The Grounders wouldn't have just left him there." Octavia breathed in and exhaled deeply as she sat across from the Grounder. They sat a few minutes in silence before Octavia began to speak again. "That was a good idea you had with the pipe yesterday. Thank you." The Grounder nodded her head.

"I'm glad he's getting better."

"I just can't believe he's still tired."

"He's body had been fighting an infection day and night since he was speared. I'd be surprised if he's active at all, Octavia." The woman said.

"...I kinda find it unfair that you know my name but I don't know yours." The woman stayed quiet. "Come on, I already know your secret. You can trust me."

"How do I know you didn't tell anyone. You could be lying to my face." Octavia looked away. The woman realized if Octavia had trusted her enough, or at least made it seem like she trusted Octavia, then maybe she could eventually help her escape. "Cattleya." The woman said. Octavia's eyes lit up.

"That's so pretty! Bellamy picked my name. It doesn't sound that nice."

"It sounds strong like a warrior. Octavia of the Sky people." Octavia smiled at Cattleya.

"What language is that? Are you able to teach me it?"

The sound of someone climbing up the ladder abruptly ended their conversation. Octavia swiftly stood up and looked down the shaft to see who as coming up. "Monty."

"Hey, what are you doing up here?"

"Just checking to see if Jasper still asleep." She replied.

"Do you know if the Grounder did anything?" Monty asked as he moved to his work station. He's been trying for days to get in communication with the Ark.

"No, not yet but I'm pretty sure she didn't have anything to do with it."

"How are you so sure?"

"She's been up here the whole time." Monty stared at Cattleya narrowing his eyes at her.

"She probably didn't have anything to do with it but that doesn't mean her people didn't. What happened to her face?" Monty asked. Octavia's eyes widen.

"I splashed water on her to wake her up." Octavia admitted.

"Why?"

"I thought I could get something out of her. Try a new strategy."

"Now, she'd kill us for sure."

"She doesn't look that mad to me." They both looked back at the Grounder. Monty with scrunched eyebrows and Octavia with a small smile. Monty shook his head and went back to working on the silver wristband at his makeshift work station.

Eventually, Jasper had woken up from his sleep making Octavia explode into a frenzy. She had somehow convinced Jasper he was ready to walk outside of the Dropship and into the open woods. "Wait, Jasper!" Octavia shouted down the shaft. She walked over to Cattleya and lifted her up by her arm. "I'm using you as protection. The Grounders won't hurt us, if I use you as a shield." Really, Octavia just felt bad for Cattleya and it was a lame excuse to get her out. Monty watched with wide eyes as Octavia bent down to untie the rope around Cattleya's feet.

"What are you doing?" Monty said. "She could escape!" Octavia retied the rope with a little more extension around Cattleya's feet and retied her hands in front of her, then stood up and faced Monty.

"Look!" Octavia proudly showcased her rope work on Cattleya's feet. "She can't escape like that."

"What about Bellamy?" Monty said.

"I'll worry about Bellamy, you worry about communicating with the Ark." Octavia climbed first down the ladder followed by Cattleya. Jasper eyes widen as he watched the Grounder's feet hit the Dropship floor.

"Whoa! Whoa! What is she doing down here?" Jasper questioned aloud. Octavia rolled her eyes. "She threw a spear at me!"

"You don't know that. It could've been a different Grounder." Octavia defended. "You just have to trust me. If she was a threat she would have killed us by now, right?" Octavia stated.

"Yeah, well, she's been tied up the whole time! Or, maybe she's looking for the right opportunity!" Jasper argued back.

Octavia forcefully pushed Jasper out of the Dropship with one hand and held Cattleya's bound hands in the another. Being held captive in a lamp lit containment was not the same as letting the sun shine on her face. The rays of light caused Cattleya to squint her eyes from the stinging brightness. She couldn't quiet see them but she heard the Sky People whispering and staring at her. It was a clear dose of reality that she was not welcomed here.

Once the three of them were outside of the wall, Octavia tried her very best to get Jasper to participate in exploring the outside again until she was taken from behind a tree. Cattleya thinking that one of her people grabbed her, she tried her best to follow after only to see her struggling to get out of the arms one of her own people. Cattleya raised her hands and quickly swung them back down aiming for the Sky Boy's face, so he would release Octavia, but she stopped Cattleya before she could impact. "Octavia? Octavia! Octavia, are you okay?" Jasper asked from a distance. Octavia came out from behind the tree holding Cattleya's hands.

"Get the hell out of here." She yelled at the boy. Octavia again tried to get Jasper to step out into the forest but something else had caught Cattleya's attention; a ray of light was perfectly hitting a metal object in the distance that was reflecting directly into Cattleya's eyes. She followed the light to a small pile of green leaves on the ground. Cattleya moved the leaves out the way and heard a gasp from over her shoulder.

Octavia and Jasper's eyes grew wide as they found a makeshift knife and two fingers laid next to each other on the ground.
