《My Mate the Wanderer》8. Sweet Smells

The next thing I knew was that I felt warm and I could feel the sunlight shining onto my face.
I quickly opened up my eyes to reveal that I was now laying in my bedroom.
'What in the world happened? Was that all just a terrible nightmare?'
I quickly tried to sit up but was stopped by a terrible feeling in my shoulder.
I started to pull my shirt down over it to see a halfway healed bite mark.
It clearly wasn't a nightmare, but how in the world did I get back to my house?
The last thing I remember is seeing Tyler beside me and that large black wolf no longer being there.
More importantly why in the world is this super fresh wound nearly healed?
I gently swung my feet out of the bed and slowly tried to stand.
My head swam but I was able to retain my balance.
I felt awful.
I think the only thing that was going to help would be a nice hot shower to help wash away the troubles of yesterday.
I slowly stripped down as not not hurt my shoulder any more then it needed to be.
As the hot water rushed over my body I gingerly washed my wound being careful not to irritate it more then I needed to.
My head reeled throughout the entire shower with so many questions that I needed answers to.
I needed to find Tyler so that he could explain my me what in the world just happened.
After I had finished cleaning myself up I got dressed being careful to wear a shirt that would fully cover my shoulder so that no one in my family would see it.
I still felt pretty weak so I grabbed myself some breakfast and headed out the back door.

As soon as I came to the edge of the woods in my backyard my heart started racing.
There is no way I can go back out there. What if those things are still there.
I paced back and forth for a few minutes and finally let myself accept that there was no way in hell that I was going to go back out there.
I knew that I needed answers but I just couldn't bring myself to walk into the woods that nearly killed me last night.
I walked to the front of the house and sat on the front stoop while I tried to hold back my tears.
I need to know but I can't go back.
As I sat there for what felt like a lifetime I heard a car pulling into the driveway.
I lifted my head to see a car that I didn't recognize.
I stared at the car while the driver side door opened, and out stepped Tyler.
I quickly jumped to my feet as I felt my fear and rage start to boil over.
"What in the world happened last night?" I nearly shouted at him.
I stomped my way across the driveway towards him.
I clearly had taken him by surprise because I saw him wince at my harsh words.
Almost as though my tone had hurt his feelings.
"I should be asking you the same! Why didn't you shift and defend yourself?" He said cuttingly. "You could have died! Do you even understand how foolish that was? What if I had lost you!"
I stopped, completely lost at what he had just said.
"What are you talking about I defended myself to the best of my abilities."
Tyler's face quickly dropped.
He looked as though someone had told him something insanely disturbing.

"What's wrong with you?" I asked as calmly as I could afraid that he was going to go off on me.
"You don't know do you?" Tyler's voice came out as nothing more then a whisper that I was surprised that I could even hear.
"Get into the car and I will explain everything as best as I can." He said gently.
I slowly slid into the passenger side of the car when a delicious aroma hit my nose.
It smelled like a crisp water smell, earthy but so sweet and smooth.
My mouth started to water at the smell and my head became foggy.
Tyler opened his side of the car and gracefully sat down and started it.
"What kind of air freshener do you have in he it smells amazing!"
The sweet smell made a feeling of calmness wash over me.
I looked over to Tyler and saw the stupidest grin spread over his lips.
"I guess that might be a good point in which to start this conversation; what your smelling is me."

I wrote this when I was 16/17 (which was many years ago now!) on a really old PC I called Phylis. I remember having to print it out on an old ribbon printer to submit it to publishers - this was back before esubs were the norm! It never got picked up and I ended up self publishing it. I hope you enjoy.
