《My Mate the Wanderer》9. His Shift

I rolled my eyes at Tyler's stupid grin.
He was clearly being full of himself.
"Listen Aubree, there are some things that I'm going to tell you that may sound crazy, but I need you to just bare with me."
I could see a hint of sadness behind Tyler's eyes.
Was he really that afraid of how I might react?
"Just please tell me. I have to know what happened last night." I quietly said.
"I'm stuck in between thinking it was a dream and knowing that its reality because of this stupid bite on my shoulder." I said as I pulled in the collar of my shirt so that he could see the partially healed wound.
Tyler glanced toward me to take a quick survey of what it looked like.
If I didn't know better I would have thought that his eyes turned black in that brief moment.
'I must really be losing my mind from all of this stress.' I thought to myself.
"I'm so sorry Aubree, I didn't get there fast enough last night." Tyler said with hurt clear in his voice.
"It's not like you could have stopped a deranged wolf from attacking me." I said as I turned to look out the window.
I could feel tears start to brim over in my eyes and then the car start to slow down.
The next thing I knew was that Tyler had unbuckled me and pulled me into his lap while I let my tears fall.
"I'm just so confused." I said through sniffles and tears.
Tyler let me sit on his lap while I cried for a while, as I sat I became increasing aware of how safe I felt in his arms
I knew I needed to collect myself so I could get the answers I so desperately needed.

"Ok, I'm ready. Please tell me Tyler."
"I guess we can start at one of the easiest points to digest. Your my mate Aubree." He said.
"Mate? Thats what people from the UK call their friends, right?" I asked innocently.
"Yes, but that's not what I mean by mate, in your kind it's like a pull from within yourself that lets you know that the other person is who your supposed to spend your life with." He continued.
"It's essentially like the were term for one true love. When I first met you my instincts screamed 'mine' and I could feel myself being pulled to you."
I looked up at him with a slack jaw. 'Did Tyler just tell me that I'm like his one true love?'
I cleared my throat and shifted in his arms.
I grabbed the handle to the car door and opened it.
"I need a second of air." I said.
This news was exciting and all but am I really just supposed to accept it?
I knew I didn't want to fight it.
I understood the pull he was talking about, I mean I had felt it too, but to be told that he was my mate would take a little bit of time to swallow.
I lowered myself out of the car and walked around to the trunk of his car and leaned against it.
"Ok, keep telling me more, because I need to know about last night." I said as bravely as I could.
"Last night you encountered someone of your kind, a wolf just like you, though I doubt you knew anything more about it then what I have just told you."
"He was similar to you, a person who could shift their form to become a wolf, the difference is that he had seemed to have lost a good portion of his humanity."

I put my hand up and stopped Tyler where he was.
"So you mean like a werewolf? As in the kind you see in movies? So what now that he bit me I'm going to turn into a wolf?" I said with a sick chuckle escaping at the end.
He must be nuts. The hot guy who just told me I'm his one true love it's absolutely nuts.
"No, it doesn't work like that way with wolves. Wolves are born not turned." Tyler said completely serious.
"Well last time I checked I have never ran around on all fours howling at the moon!" I spat at him.
Tyler took a step towards me and I took a step back.
"Please don't shout I'm just trying to help. It's rare but in some cases wolves that leave pack houses sometimes don't shift anymore. Some turn rouge but some just tend to not turn unless provoked."
I could see Tyler was trying his best to remain calm but how am I to be expected to accept this nonsense.
I could feel my head start to pound as Tyler tried to explain further.
I felt hot.
Unwell.
I think I'm going to faint.
I could feel myself being pulled and faint whispers.
I breathed deeply only to smell that sweet crisp water smell and warmth engulfing me.
As I calmed down I could tell that I was in Tyler's arms.
"You shouldn't get yourself worked up like that. You'll shift if your not careful." Tyler said soothingly.
"I'm not a supernatural being my family is normal. Besides that sort of thing doesn't exist." I said listlessly.
"If you don't believe me I could show you if your up for it." He said hesitantly.
I nodded my head.
I don't know what I was expecting but I knew I had to see.
Tyler grabbed my hand and led me into the woods.
As we got deeper in I could feel the fear creeping up on me, but I pushed it down.
I need to see wether it's true what Tyler says or if he turns out to be insane.
It will at least give me the answers that I crave.
Once we had walked far enough from the road Tyler released my hand and turned towards me.
"Before I show you I need you to know that I would never do anything to hurt you and that if you'll let me, I'll keep you safe."
I nodded at him and he began to strip off his shirt, shoes, and shorts, leaving him in just his boxers.
I could feel my eyes being drawn to his strong defined chest.
I looked up as I heard a low growl come from Tyler.
As my eyes met his they were pitch black.
I slowly took a step back.
A grin spread across his mouth.
"You may want to close your eyes as this might be a little strange to watch." He said.
I shook my head as confidently as I could, I needed to see this.
The next thing I knew I could hear popping noises coming from Tyler as his bones started to break and shift.
The scene wasn't quite as bad as I had expected but it was still very unpleasant to watch.
I couldn't keep my eyes open I had to shut them as tightly as I could.
I only had them shut for a few seconds when the popping had stopped.
I opened my eyes only to see the same large black wolf from last night standing in front of me.

8 129The Emperor's Chef
"Cook like your life depends on it, kid. Because it does." Charles had an enviable future lined up for him. Training from the age of five by some of the finest chefs in the world. Schooling at a top culinary academy in the capital. An honorable position as heir to House Boulier, a line of merchant-lords who have charmed the rich and powerful with their cooking for centuries. And in a single night, it all burned to ash. When the outbreak of war destroys his hometown, Charles is charged with escorting his family’s sacred treasure—a recipe book passed down for untold generations—out of harm's way. But his simple mission grows complicated when he’s captured by one of the most feared battalions in the world: the Spears of Mercy. Life as a prisoner in their war camp is brutal and uncertain. Charles has few allies and even fewer strengths to rely on. Only his skills in the culinary arts, honed over a lifetime in the kitchen, are deemed useful enough to keep him alive another day. But he’s not out of hope just yet. With a dash of wit, a pinch of luck, and some very creative cooking, he might just find a way to recover his family’s legacy and take back his freedom. This project is a food-themed fantasy that centers on cooking and chefs. The setting spans a wide world featuring ingredients/recipes both real and inspired by traditional fantasy. I'll eventually be publishing it as a full-length novel (or series of novels depending on length). These are the first draft chapters. I'll likely be re-writing more than once, then editing before publishing, so impressions and feedback are quite welcome. If you like the story so far and you're interested in being an early reviewer for the final product, feel free to message me. I'm looking for an artist to make some concept art and a cover (the cover shown here is just a temporary placeholder). A stand-alone novel for now, but it may turn into a series down the road.
