"Do this, do that! Yeah, so he's nice to every kid in the world except his own son, how ironic!" huffed Hawthorn. He was the son of Santa, the supposedly kind man who treated him like a slave. His mother came over to where he was ranting to Jingle Berries, his elf friend who always listened. How he wished Alica was here! She always knew how to look on the bright side, how to do good.

"Now, now, Hawthorn, you know that he is very busy. It's Christmas Eve!" his mother told him. He sighed.

"I guess." He sorted the long woolly scarf he always wore along with his shaggy brown hair and stripy red and green jumper. He always was dressed for the weather, with big snow boots and a fluffy hat that had straps that came down to cover his ears. He always wore gloves. He didn't know how the elves managed to wear their thin green outfits, but they did. Maybe it was all the work they had to do. Although he knew they all loved the work, he still felt sorry for them having to work 24/7. He looked inside the stables to wear the reindeer were all getting ready for tonight's sleigh ride. One reindeer was not being kitted up, as normal. Holly never got kitted up. She was too young. Jingle Berries' mother was the stable master so the two of them often got to play with Holly.

"Now then you two, promise you won't get in everyone's way while we try to launch Christmas?" asked Hawthorn's mother.

"Promise" said Hawthorn.

"Yup" said Jingle Berries.

"Now then, it's getting late, how about you go to bed?" A mischievous twinkle appeared in her eyes. "And maybe Santa will have been in the morning." Hawthorn rolled his eyes then set off for bed. Jingle Berries went his other way. Hawthorn snuggled down under the covers, only to hear a voice.

"Hawthorn" hissed Jingle Berries.

"Yes, Jingle Berries?" he replied.

"Can we go out and play now? The sky light will be on!"

"The northern lights aren't always on."

"Exactly, so I wast to seeee them!"

"We can see them another time, come on."

"No, but I want to seeee them."

"As you ha-"

"NOW!"

"Ok, ok, fine." Hawthorn followed Jingle Berries outside and they watched the sky dance for about an hour, then in a bright flash it disappeared.
