"okay, martin, robinson, bond, hawkins." a man called, four people fled out of the room to follow the resident.

the rest of the interns were getting ready, putting on their scrubs and white coats.

meredith and madelyn had been chatting.

"only seven woman out of twenty." meredith said in disbelief.

"yeah, i hear one of them's a model. seriously, that's gonna help with the respect thing." they paused when they heard another man calling more interns.

not hearing their names being called, they continued on with their conversation.

"what resident are you assigned to?" madelyn asked.

"i got bailey."

"the nazi? me too."

a short boy that was standing at the lockers across from madelyn's decided to join their conversation.

"you got the nazi? so did i. at least we'll be tortured together, right? i'm george o'malley. we met at the mixer." he said more to meredith then madelyn.

"you had a black dress with a slit up the side, strappy sandals, and.. now you think i'm gay. no, i'm not gay. it's - it's just that you were - you were very unforgettable."

by the end of george's ramble, madelyn had already left the two alone, somewhat annoyed at the boy.

"o'malley, grey, yang, grey, stevens." hearing her name called, madelyn walked up to the man.

"bailey?" she asked him.

"end of the hall." he answered, pointing.

an asian woman and walked up beside her and her sister,

"that's the nazi?" she questioned.

" i thought the nazi would be a guy." george commented.

"i thought the nazi would be a nazi." meredith joined.

a blonde girl walked up to the group, also deciding to comment,

"maybe it's professional jealousy. maybe she's brilliant, and they call her nazi because they're jealous. maybe she's nice." she said before walking away.

"let me guess - you're the model." the asian woman sneared.

madelyn turned to the short, plump, woman with dark skin, aka the nazi.

the model walked straight to her,

"hi, i'm isobel stevens, but everyone calls me izzie." she introduced.

bailey looked her up and down before turning to the rest of us.

"i have five rules, memorize them now. rule number one, don't bother sucking up," she shot izzie a look,

"i already hate you. that's not gonna change. trauma protocol, phone list, pagers," she pointed to things sitting on the counter,

"nurses will page you. you will answer every page at a run, a run! that's rule number two. your first shift starts now and lasts forty-eight hours. you're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. you run labs, write orders, work every second of the night until you drop. and don't complain."

bailey led us down a hallway and continued her lecture,

"on-call rooms, attendings hog them. sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three. if i'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is actually dying. rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when i get there. not only have you killed someone, you would have woke me for no good reason. we clear?"

madelyn slowly raised her hand.

"yes?" bailey acknowledged.

"you said five rules. that was only four."

after her question, a pager started to beep.

"rule number five, when i move, you move." bailey finished before jogging down the hallway.

they group followed her with a gurney to the helicopter pad on the roof of the building. a helicopter landed, and the team started to remove the patient and place her on a gurney.

"what do we got?" bailey asked.

"katie bryce, fifteen year old female, new onset seizures, intermittent for the past week. i.v. lost en route, started grande mal seizing as we descended." the paramedic explained.

"all right, get her on her side."

the group took katie from the roof into a trauma room. bailey started to give orders.

"izzie, 10 milligrams diazepam i.m." izzie attempted what bailey told her, but failed.

"no, no. the white lead is on the right. righty, whitey, smoke over fire."

"grey, either one, a large bore i.v. don't let the blood hemolyze. let's go!" madelyn took the responsibility of the i.v. while everyone continued doing what they could around her.

after madelyn was done, bailey instructed her to leave the room, claiming there was too many people.

madelyn was walking through the halls of the hospital, trying to find somewhere to rest, when she crashed into somebody.

madelyn caught a glimpse of the navy blue scrubs, realizing she crashed into an attending.

having fallen over, the man helped her up. madelyn, wanting to thank the person, looked up and realized that she had seen that very face this morning.

"derek, i mean, dr. shepherd."

"derek is fine."

"didn't realize that you worked here too." madelyn stumbled.

"how come your wondering the halls?"

"i got kicked out of the trauma room. too many people."

"awe, i see. hey, wanna see something cool?"

"uh, sure."

derek removed the scans from the folder he was holding and held them up to the light. they were brain scans, and right in the center, a tumor.

"that is cool. hey, do you know where the cafeteria is? i'm getting a little hungry."

"sure, i'll take you."

madelyn followed derek through the halls of the hospital, memorizing the way so she wouldn't forget next time.

derek led her to a large room filled with people. doctors, nurses, and even some patients.

"thanks derek."

"no problem. mind if i join you for lunch?"

"no not at all. mer is my only friend here so, would be nice to have someone around."

derek gave madelyn a smile and then led her through the crowd to where the line for food was.

the pair got their food and then sat down and a table by themselves.

"your last name's grey, right?" derek asked madelyn. she gave him a nod as a response.

"is your mother ellis grey? the famous surgeon?" he continued.

"yep." madelyn answered, popping the p. she never enjoyed talking about her mom.

derek and madelyn continued talking, watching doctors come and go. madelyn noticed the group of interns that were also on baileys service.

she looked at them and realized meredith had walked in.

she looked around for a second, making eye contact with madelyn, waving her over to go join her and the others.

she had seemed to miss derek, seeing as his back was turned to her.

"thanks for everything derek, i hope i see you around." madelyn waves as she got up and joined the others.

"hey guys." she said, sitting down with the rest of them.

"what's up."

"katie bryce is a pain in the ass." meredith started.

"if i hadn't taken the hippocratic oath, i'd kevorkian her with my bare hands." everyone stared at her for a moment.

"whoa, mer, chill." said madelyn, breaking the silence.

george, izzie, and christina, the asian woman, all stared at both meredith and madelyn, for only seconds before they sat down, they had been talking about their mother.

"what?" the twins said in unison.

burke, the Cardiothoracic head surgeon walked up to the table,

"good afternoon, interns. it's posted, but i thought i'd share the good news personally."

everyone exchanged confused looks, then turned their attention back into the attending,

"as you know, the honor of preforming the first surgery is reserved for the intern that shows the most promise."

everyone sat up straight in their chair, eager to know who the surgery was going to be given too.

"as i'm running the o.r. today, i get to make that choice... george o'malley."

"me?"
