the game. they say a person either has what it takes to play, or they don't.
my mother was one of the greats. me on the other hand, i'm kind of screwed.
madelyn woke up to the sound of movement coming from downstairs. she slowly lifted herself from her safe haven, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. she slowly opened her curtains, letting the sun hit her pale face.
she winced at the bright light, then turned away and made her way to the hallway. she spotted meredith running up the stairs with a blanket wrapped around her otherwise naked body.
"morning mer." madelyn mumbled, making her way down the stairs. she walked past the living room, noticing someone standing inside it.
madelyn back tracked to see who it was, struggling to put his pants on, there was an attractive man with shaggy, black hair.
"morning." madelyn mumbled to the mystery man. she knew that he was the one her sister had spent the night with.
"want anything to eat before you leave? mer's never great with guests." she offered. the man shot her a friendly smile, pulling his shirt over his head.
"toast is fine, thanks. derek, by the way. derek shepherd." he introduced. derek walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table.
madelyn pulled out four pieces of bread, not knowing how many derek wanted.
"nice to meet you, derek. i'm madelyn, mers sister."
"nice to meet you too, madelyn." after a few moments of awkward silence later, the pieces of toast sprung up from the toaster.
madelyn pulled them onto a plate, grabbed some butter, and a knife, then set everything onto the table.

derek grabbed two pieces of toast, leaving two for madelyn.
when derek was just about done his breakfast, meredith ran down the stairs with a towel on her head, and wrapped around her body.
"hey mad-" she stopped mid sentence when she saw that derek was sitting in the room.
"i see you've met derek." meredith said in a harsh tone.
"don't worry, i was just about to leave. thank you for the toast, madelyn." derek waved before walking out the front door.
once derek was out of the house, meredith turned to madelyn.
"you made him breakfast?" she half yelled at her sister.
"it was the least i could do. now give me a minute so i can get ready, we have to leave for work soon, remember, it's our first day!" madelyn squealed. meredith rolled her eyes as madelyn ran up the stairs to get ready.

soon enough, the sisters were out the door, driving towards seattle grace hospital. madelyn could barely hold on her excitement, annoying her sister quite a lot.
meredith pulled up to the hospital, the pair ran as fast as they could, madelyn had made them slightly late.
when the pair walked in, there was a group of people surrounding richard webber, the current chief of surgery. they quickly joined the group, listening in on the conversation.
"each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. a month ago you were in med school, being taught by doctors. today, you are the doctors." dr. webber finished.
he then lead the large group down a hallway towards a room, he opened the door, revealing a large o.r.
richard continued his speech,
"the seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. you will be pushed to the breaking point. look around you. say hello to your competition. eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. five of you will crack under the pressure. two of you will be asked to leave. this is your starting line. this is your arena. how well you play, that's up to you." richard finished.

like i said, i'm screwed.
madelyn was looking in awe, looking around the room in wonder. she didn't realize the boy staring at her from the corner.
he watched her as her face lit up like the sun, just happy to be in the very presence of this room.
