《The Midnight Man》Chapter 12 - Sam

The Midnight Man slowly walked down the stairs and towards Sam, still locked in the cupboard. Poor Sam had been locked in there for hours with no light or phone. He had no sense of time, and it had been the purest silence since everyone ran upstairs. Sam could only hear the occasional scream, but that was it.

Sam was curled into a ball on the floor in the corner of the room, softly crying. "W-what h-have I done!?" Sam sobbed to himself.

The Midnight Man opened the door and stood in the doorway unnoticed by Sam for a few moments before he spoke.

"Well," he started, "You've caused your friend's death, haunted this house, cursed you and your family for generations to come and best of all, you summoned me to help!"

Sam's head snapped up as he realised what was happening. The Midnight Man had found him. "They're not dead!" Tears streamed from Sam's face.

"Oh, really? Why don't you see for yourself then." The Midnight Man stepped out of the doorway. He gestured to the dark room, waiting for Sam to investigate. Sam stood up but couldn't see much.

"I-I can't see," Sam said, shaking.

The Midnight Man clapped his hands as the small candle on the floor lit. "How about now?"

Sam picked up the little candle and held it tight.

"Go on, see for yourself." Sam walked past The Midnight Man and into the living room. He was hit with the foul smell of rusty, metallic blood and smoke.

SPLASH!

Sam looked down and saw a horrid mess of blood. He stepped back but bumped into The Midnight Man, towering above him. The Midnight Man pushed Sam. Sam could feel his body fall into a pool of his girlfriend's blood.

"Keep going! You'll regret it if you don't."

Sam scrambled quickly to his feet, soaked in Katrina's dark, wet blood. He followed the trail of blood until he saw his worst nightmare. Katrina was lying on the floor. She was surrounded by blood, glass and dry candle wax. Salty tears poured nonstop from his puffy red eyes as he kneeled beside his dead girlfriend. Shards of glass pierced his skin, but he didn't care.

CRUNCH!

The Midnight Man suddenly kicked Sam hard in the stomach, breaking a few of his ribs. "GET UP NOW!"

Sam did as the Midnight Man told. Clutching his stomach, he started shuffling toward the stairs in extreme pain. His broken body shook as his brain tried to process what was happening. His knees stung as blood slowly dripped out of the cuts.

"WALK PROPERLY!"

Sam took a few steps, but the pain was too much to handle. He collapsed on the staircase. He dropped his candle onto the floor and the boiling wax dripped out everywhere. The small flame was enough to start a fire, and soon Sam was surrounded by flames higher than he could have ever imagined.
