《The Midnight Man》Chapter 7 - Darkness

Colby opened his eyes after about five minutes. The shadow was gone. It was complete darkness because the candle on the table had gone out. Colby stumbled to his feet, leaning on the staircase rail for support. He was confused and dizzy for a few moments, but then everything came flooding back to him. He looked around in the darkness for a while until he found his candle and the lighter. When Colby lit his candle he felt sick to his stomach when he saw Katrina lying on the floor, limp and lifeless. She was lying in a pool of dark red blood and surrounded by shards of glass. The air smelled of rusty, metallic blood, and smoke from Colby's candle. His candle was tiny, compared to the huge darkness around him.

"K-k-kat? Kat. Katrina? KAT! Oh, Kat. I'm so sorry, I should have done better. I should have protected you!" Colby fell to his knees and started crying hysterically.

After what seemed like hours of crying for Kat, Colby heard a loud crash from around the corner. He stood up too quickly and almost fell to the ground again. Colby yelled out trying to seem confident, but it was difficult because his voice was trembling.

"Sh-sh- show yourself. Or-or else!" Colby's voice was shaky and horse, his throat was dry and he had the taste of salty tears in his mouth. He could hear his heart pounding in his chest as it beat like crazy from all the adrenalin pumping through his entire body.

After a few minutes of complete silence, a hand soaked in blood appeared from around the corner. It grabbed the edge of the wall and pushed itself forward, leaving behind a bloody hand print.
