《The Midnight Man》Chapter 3 - No Turning Back

After turning off all of the lights, and locking the front and back doors, they were almost ready.

"I got the pins!" Colby yelled out as he walked back into Sam's room."

They each took a pin and one by one sacrificed some blood onto the paper.

"OUCH!" Screamed Katrina.

"OOOWWWWWwwwwww" Whined Jake.

"Got my sacrifice ready! Haha!" Joked Colby

"I was expecting more pain." Said Sam.

They all put their paper behind the wooden door and at 11.59 knocked 22 times, with the last knock being at 12.00am exactly. They opened the door, blew out their candles, closed the door and knocked 3 more times. When they opened the door and lit their candles again, the game had started.

"No turning back." Said Jake trying to be funny.

"So we just walk around in the darkness for like 3 hours now?" Katrina asked.

"Sort of, it's like a slow version of chasey/ hide and seek. You can't be caught by the midnight man, and you can't stay in one spot for too long. If your candle goes out, you have 10 seconds to light it again and it means he's close. And whatever you do, DO NOT turn on any lights. Or he'll get you."

"And if we get caught by The Midnight Man???" Katrina's voice was trembling a bit when she asked that.

"Then," Sam responded, "We will get punished."Sam looked down at the ground, and turned away.

"So" Katrina said, reaching for her paper, "Do we-"

"NO!" Screamed Sam, snatching the paper from her shaky hand and putting it back down quickly. "You can't touch the paper Katrina! It represents your life! It needs to stay here with the door closed, so the Midnight Man cant get to it! If something happens to that piece of paper, something happens to you!"

Sam locked the door and everyone went silent for a few moments, until Colby screamed,

"THE LIGHTER! THE LIGHTER! QUICKLY PASS ME THE LIGHTER! MY CANDLE WENT OUT!!!!"

Everyone was running around screaming looking for a lighter! They only had 10 seconds!

"HERE! ITS HERE! I FOUND IT!!!!" Screamed Sam, lighting Colby's candle again.

They quickly realised that they had been standing in one place for way too long.

And sure, there are lots of reasons a candle would go out on its own, wax, wind or movement. Even though this was just a coincidence, they thought it might be better to go downstairs for a while. Just to be safe.
