《The Midnight Man》Chapter 2 - The Game

When Colby, Jake and Katrina arrived at Sam's house, they could tell by the stuff on his table, that they were not just playing a game. It was 9.00pm and the sun had already set. They all went into Sam's bedroom and sat on his bed, Sam sat at his desk facing the bed.
"I found a game we can play! And because this is one of our last nights together, before Jake moves to London, I wanted to make it extra special!" Sam said, sounding full of joy.
"SAM!" Katrina yelled "SERIOUSLY?!?! YOU CANCEL OUR DATE TO PLAY A DANGEROUS GAME?!?! ARE YOU CRAZY?!?!" Katrina had fire in her eyes at this point. She was furious.
"Hey!" Sam yelled, "Stop assuming things! What if I just want to play a fun game like Mario Kart?"
"Well," Colby replied, "I'm sorry Sam, but you don't exactly have a reputation for playing fun games like Mario Kart." Colby continued, "Sam, be honest, is this going to put our lives at risk?" Colby said leaning forward and staring directly into Sam's pale blue eyes.
"If we do it correctly we won't die, but if we upset him...." Sam trailed off.
"WHAT! SO WE COULD DIE IF WE DO THIS STUPID THING WRONG!?!?" Now, Katrina was not only angry, but worried too.
Colby knew that Sam loved these games so much, and being his best friend ever, he needed to do this. Sam had been through a lot this past year, and hasn't exactly been very happy lately. Now Colby had a chance to cheer him up...
Colby looked at the others and then back at Sam. "Then I guess we'll have to do it correctly."
Sam's eyes lit up with happiness for the first time in weeks.

"So how do we play?" Jake said.
"First we get a candle each. Then we need to sacrifice some blood. And the-"
"WE NEED TO STAB OURSELVES???!!!! NO WAY I'M DOING THAT!" Katrina blurted out, interrupting Sam again.
"KATRINA! LET SAM FINNISH!" Katrina went silent when Colby yelled at her.
"So anyway, after we do that, we write our full name on some paper and put it behind the wooden door. Then we place our candle on top and we light it. After that, we put our blood on the paper and then we close the door. And the-"
"And then some magical creature or something appears behind the door??? This will be a piece of cake!" Jake wasn't very smart, so he struggled to understand the danger part.
"Why is everyone interrupting Sam tonight?!?! Why is it so hard to just let him speak?" Colby looked at Sam once everyone was silent again. "Go on Sam."
"Thank you Colby." Sam continued "Then we knock 22 times on the door, with the last knock EXACTLY at midnight. That's when we open the door, blow out our candles, close the door again and then knock 3 more times. After that, we open the door, pick our candle up and light it again. That's when the game starts. It finishes at exactly 3.33am."
"So what do we do for the 2 hours? Watch t.v?" Jake asked, mildly confused.
"Actually, it's 3 and a half hours. And I forgot to tell you, we uh, we can't have any lights or electronic devices on during the game....."
"What." Katrina said quietly, sounding like she was about to burst, "I CANT USE MY PHONE FOR 3 HOURS!!!!!!!!"
"Actually, three and a half hours..." Sam corrected.
"Is that everything we should know? Just making sure we don't do anything wrong." Colby said.
"Yep. That's basically it." Sam looked down at his phone. "It's 11.40. If we want to do this, we have 20 minutes to turn the lights off and get the candles, paper and the blood ready. What do you think?"
"I'm in!" Said Jake
"I've got your back bro!" Said Colby. "Katrina?"
"Fine. But if we die-"
"We won't." Colby reassured Katrina and turned to Sam. "We're ready."

Binary of Life and Death
Monsters, gold, chaos, glory, adventure, what more could attract two of the greatest players of all time to Sugarea, the most popular MMORPG of its time. But everyone makes errors, and unfortunate for these two brilliant players, they have made the grave mistake of not actually sleeping like normal humans and missed out on the very moment the new Dark Legion update would take effect. Or did they? They wake in what seems familiar yet not, but they soon realize their predicament. They are inside their game avatar's bodies! A half-Demon and a Dragonoid are now struggling with more than just power, these two men have to find their new purpose and calling in a completely different world. Will they concur it like ordinary land or will they enlighten the planet into equality? Do figures pull strings in the dark or is everything open to the public eye? Nothing is certain except the unknown, and nothing is ever as it seems... This is an Isekai story, as such, some parts may sound either cliché or similar to others, but I assure you, I tried to prevent that. To make it known, I took quite a lot of inspiration from the light novel/anime Overlord, but that doesn't mean it's a direct rip-off of it. You'll find there to be quite the amount of differences. Just a little heads up as well, you should expect irregular uploads, as it takes me a long time to write each chapter. I am currently trying for once every other week on Sundays around 10:00 A.M. Chapters are usually 7k words and up, with the longest (chapter 3) being 10.3k words. So, if you like to sit down and read a long chapter every two weeks at 10:00 A.M. EST on Sundays, then you can waste your time here! Small disclaimer: Profanity is far and few between, and mostly used by side characters, rarely the main character. When something with gore happens, I describe to the best of my ability, which will only get better the longer I write this... :) Small cuts between perspectives happen, and can hide what some characters do, which will be revealed in future chapters, I'm not that lazy... all the time... There are some parts that are long blocks of text, most, if not all, of them, are characters talking, but I try not to info dump. I know one of the tags says "Psychological", and for the most part, it is, but it's not as prominent as other stories, instead, it's more hidden and scattered, but I did try to make the pieces I did reveal all fit together. Cover art is bound to be changed when I have a good picture to use, so the Yin-Yang is a placeholder for now unless yall wanna gimme something to use *wink wink nudge nudge*. So yeah, please give it a try, as I have nothing better to do with my life, and I am banking solely off of a career in literature and am hoping that I can create a story that can actually be called something more than a child's imagination running wild. The eventual and inevitable end to the story won't be for a long while, at least till chapter 40 or so. I have thought long and hard about the message and themes at play, so I hope you, the reader (who has some amazing hair btw), can enjoy and partake on this adventure with me into my dark empty pit of an imagination.

8 141The Tears of Kas̆dael
It was just supposed to be a game. A really, really great game, yes - but a game. Instead, Jasper got his heart ripped out by a brooding goddess and awoke to find himself in another world. No weapons, no skills. Naked. Trapped in a world full of ancient horrors, where gods and monsters still roam the earth, Jasper is forced to adapt quickly or die - and he's not ready to die. Good thing he's a mage. This is a high-fantasy novel with light LitRPG elements. It's not super-crunchy, but the system is an important part of the story. There is some light cursing and gore, but this is not a Grimdark novel. There will also be no harem. The current schedule is chapters on M-W-F of around 2000-2500 words, as well as occasional bonus chapters that provide background or insights into side characters. This is my first real attempt at writing a full novel, but the story is based on a world that I've been creating and re-creating since I was a child. I have an extensive "history" and religion, and even a semi-cohesive language system worked out, which will hopefully slowly shine through as the story progresses. I want to avoid having too many info-dumps, so I may from time to time post a bonus lore chapter that will explain some of the background for any who are interested.
