《The Midnight Man》Chapter 4 - Downstairs

They all shuffled quickly down the stairs into the living room. It was only 10 past 12.00, so they still had a long time until the game was over.
After chilling in the living room for about an hour, they started to think that this stupid game, really was just a stupid game. The only thing they had experienced in an hour of this game, was the occasional candle going out or flickering. But that was easily explainable. They were about to go upstairs again, when it finally got interesting.
They started hearing faint footsteps around the house, and they started hearing doors creak open and slam closed upstairs. They were all too scared to go up there, so they decided to stay where they were. They were all thinking the same thing: What if this is real, and the midnight man is actually looking for us upstairs.
About half an hour later they noticed something....
"Ummm guys, we did turn off All of the lights in the house, right?" Asked Colby pointing at a light coming from behind the door.
"NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NOOOO!!! WE CANT HAVE ANY LIGHTS ON!!!!!" Screamed Sam, panicking. He sprinted to the room and opened the door, to find a light turned on. He walked inside and reached for the switch on the far side of the room.
SLAM!
The door slammed behind him and locked, trapping him inside.
"MY CANDLE! MY CANDLE! HELP! IT WENT OUT! I NEED THE LIGHTER!" Screamed Sam as he pounded hard on the door.
"NO, SAM! WHO HAS THE LIGHTER!?!? KATRINA!?!? JAKE?!?! NO, NO, NO WE NEED THE-"
"COLBY!" Katrina screamed, "CALM DOWN! PANICKING WILL NOT HELP SAM GET OUT OF THERE!"
Sam was now trapped in a small room, with no light and no lighter. The smoke from the extinguished candle filled the room with a familiar but terrifying smell. The gap under the door was too small to pass anything through, and the lighter was outside with Kat, Jake and Colby. Sam thought that he was alone, but he was not. The midnight man had found him, and he was about to find out what really happens when he catches you...

A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows.
