《Nick Wilde X Reader | A New Partner》It's Only Fair

You looked out the window as you sipped at your [morning drink of choice].

According to the clock on the wall, it was 5:25 AM.

Why were you up again?

The phone on the table in the kitchen gave a little buzz. The screen lit up, displaying a message from Nick Wilde. Oh right, that's why you were up. The text said, "Im outfront"

You yawned and slipped on your shoes. Right now it was bad, but you knew you'd wake up more later.

Faint artificial lights lit up the apartment complex and the connected parking lot. The sky was a soft purple color from the sun that would soon rise. Exiting and locking your room, you looked out to see his van on the right.

Hah, where did he even get this van? Orange with some kind of mural on the side? You opened the gray door and hopped into the passenger side.

"Hey, glad you could make it."

Nick was leaning back in his seat, looking over at you. The orange and white fur around his neck was slightly ruffled as if he hadn't spent much time grooming this morning. You didn't care much; it looked nice and soft that way. Complementing his somewhat unkempt fur, he had a gray button-up shirt and blue jeans.

"Mhmm, what's the score today?"

"Ticket reselling." Nick tossed you a flyer for the 'Sahara Fair.' The flyer gave details about location, attractions, food; everything it had to offer.

"Aw cool, the fair?"

He stretched in his seat, "Ahh, yep. And there's your honorary ticket selling license." Nick pointed towards the paper perched on the van's dashboard.

You grabbed and looked over the small permit. It seemed to contain all the correct information. A signature, identification number, date effective...

"How'd you get this?"

"I know some people."

Oh how mysterious~. You folded it and put it back on the dashboard for later.

"Why so early though?"

"We need to be some of the first to get tickets."

You leaned back into the seat cushion. "Fair enough." Should be around a 15 minute drive.

You wouldn't have minded if it was longer, however. It was relaxing just sitting in the van with Nick. He had the music turned off, so all you could hear was the comforting ambiance of early-morning Zootopia.

Most animals only got up after the sun rose. On the way, you saw a couple of the rare few that didn't. They had a certain appreciation for a stillness that was rare in this bustling city.

How nice.

As you crossed into the Sahara District, you saw a banner unfurled across the entrance that read: 'Sahara Square Fair.' Hmm; had a nice ring to it.

"Aw perfect," Nick interrupted your thoughts as he drove alongside the entrance. "only a couple animals got here before us."

He parked nearby and you both hopped out.

You asked while walking over to the line, "Are they trying to sell tickets too?"

"Nah, I've seen these guys before; they're only here to get first dibs on some of the stuff inside."

"Hmm. So how many tickets are we buying?" As you approached, the other animals there gave a nod to acknowledge you.

"Well, I bet we can sell at least 50. But.. we'll need to invest first before we can get any returns."

You were confident that Nick would be able to make a profit. Reading the sign, it said.. $3 for each ticket, so you dished out half of the cost: $75. It was all surplus from those pawpsicles yesterday, anyways.

He nodded, folded, and stuffed the money in his wallet. "Now, we wait."

Wait? For how long? It was 5:51 AM currently and, according to the sign, it opens at 9:00 AM.

Uggghh. You crossed your arms in a fruitless protest.

Nick's ears twitched when he heard you groan about the waiting. He looked over at the other couple animals waiting in line who had chairs with them.

He tapped his foot. "Hmm. You stay here, I'll be right back."

What? "W-where are you going?"

But he was already halfway to the van. You saw him open up the back doors and could hear his rummaging around.

Not too later, Nick hopped back out of the van carrying a large... thing. He held it over his head and impressed you by somehow managing to kick the doors of the van closed.

Only when he stumbled closer did you realize it was a chair, and you moved over as Nick tossed it down.

"Ha, whew." He pulled out his keys and pressed the lock button, eliciting a small beep from the van.

"A chair?"

"Yes, a chair. What else would it be?"

Nick pulled apart one side of the chair's legs and the rest fell open perfectly. Looked like a standard outdoor lounge chair. It had wooden legs with a thin gray fabric that stretched along from the top to the bottom.

He patted the seat. "After you."

This was such a relief. You feared you would have to stand or sit on the concrete for 3 hours.

You leaped onto the gray material that beckoned you. Ah, you could lean back and relax; so much better than standing.

"Comfy?"

"Mhmm."

"Great. Now scoot over." Nick jumped up into the chair and you quickly slid over to accommodate him.

You stiffened immediately as he plopped himself back against the chair. His warm body was pressing up against you as he adjusted himself. There was barely enough room for both of you. His large ears flicked around and rubbed against yours.

You began to blush not only from Nick, but also as the other animals waiting around looked over to see all the commotion.

Wilde, however, was completely unfazed as he reached down and pulled out his phone. "Pretty nice, huh? I almost forgot I had this thing."

You followed his example and tried to ignore all the awkward looks.

"Heh, yeah.. real nice."
