《On the Devil's Path {a SOA sequel}》Chapter eighteen

The next seven days crawled by slowly. That's how long Jax had to stay in the hospital. He probably could've been out in three, but he ripped his stitches while trying to put a shirt on and they made him stay a few more days. While he was in the hospital, Gemma and I decided it was best to postpone Abel's party until Jax came home. Gemma almost had to sick the club on the petting zoo people because they didn't want to reschedule. But, everything worked out and the party was going to be great.
I spent most of those seven days between sitting with Jax in the hospital and taking care of Abel. Every day, at various times, I would see Tara walk by Jax's window and look in. She never once looked at me, as if she couldn't see that I was there. But I saw her. And every time I did, I made sure I held Jax's hand or kissed him, just so she could see that he was mine.
Jax was getting restless. He hated being in the hospital and he hated that he had to stay in bed. He also hated that, because of his stitches and broken ribs, he couldn't wear his cut. Without it, he looked different. He didn't look like the scary biker guy anymore. He looked like a normal guy. I think that's what he hated. But I promised him, the day he was released I would bring it for him and help him put it on.
The night before we was to be let out, I kissed him softly and turned to leave. Jax caught my arm and spun me back to him. I giggled and he held me close.
"I gotta go, Jax. Visiting hours are over. You don't want nursezilla to come in here again, do you?" I told him with a smile.
He smirked and pulled me on top of him.
"She can watch." He said with a shrug.
I laughed and bent down to kiss him.
"You're crazy." I said.
"Crazy for you." He said back.
We both laughed at his cheesiness. The door swung open and nursezilla appeared with her arms folded across her chest.
"Miss, this is a hospital, not a porno set." She said dryly.
Nursezilla was a woman in her late 50s. She was tall and big, like a linebacker. She had mousey brown hair that was thin and always pulled up in a tight bun that made her face appear fatter than it was. Her eyes were a dull blue and I don't think she's smiled in 40 of her 50 years.
I held back a laugh and Jax just grinned.
"Sorry, ma'am." I finally managed to say.
Nursezilla just rolled her eyes and pointed to the clock.
"Visiting hours ended 15 minutes ago." She said.
I nodded to her and carefully got off the bed. I gathered my purse and gave Jax a quick kiss on the cheek. That wasn't enough for him. He put his hand on the back of my neck and kissed me hard. Nursezilla cleared her throat and stomped her foot impatiently.
"See you tomorrow, babe." He said after he'd let me go.
I just smiled and shook my head and followed the nurse out of the room. She grumbled something about annoying kids and needing to retire. I just smiled and made my way down the hall to the elevator. Just before I reached it, I saw Tara coming around the corner. She was looking down at a chart and didn't see me. Before I knew it, she ran right into me. Pages flew around in every direction and we were both knocked back.

"Excuse me!" She said in annoyance.
But as soon as she saw it was me, her attitude changed.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry." She said nervously.
I straightened myself and bent down to pick up some of the papers.
"It's fine." I said. I smiled softly at her.
She was flushed and she quickly scooped up the rest of the papers, throwing them into the folder.
"McKayla, right?" She asked me.
It was as if it was the first time she really saw me. Tara looked me up and down. Almost studying me.
"That's right, I'm Jax's girlfriend." I said.
The word 'girlfriend' made her wince. I knew it was pouring salt on a wound. But I didn't really care. Jax was mine. He loved me. Not her. Not anymore.
Tara forced herself to smile and nodded.
"I heard he's going home tomorrow." She said, trying to make small talk.
I nodded and shifted my purse to my other shoulder.
"Yeah, we can't wait to get him home." I said.
Awkward silence filled the hallway. What are one night stands and current girlfriends supposed to talk about anyway?
"Well, it was nice to see you again McKayla." She said finally.
I smiled sweetly.
"You too, Dr. Knowles."
She faked another smile back at me and headed off towards the nurse's station. I smiled to myself and finally made it to the elevator.
"Good morning Abel," I said as I opened his door the next morning.
Abel was standing up in his crib, smiling at me. He held out his arms and I picked him up.
"Guess what? Daddy's coming home today!" I said as I bounced him up and down.
Abel grinned and clapped his hands together. I laughed and carried him out to the kitchen. Gemma was drinking some coffee and cleaning up the counter. She smiled when Abel reached out for her.
"I'll take him. You get ready." She said to me.
I nodded and handed him over. I was still in my night shirt and my hair was pulled up in a messy bun. It was about 9 am and Jax couldn't be release until about 11:30. I was up at 7 to get the house cleaned before Abel woke up. I took a quick shower and wrapped my hair up in a towel. As I looked in the closet, I couldn't decide what to wear. Jax would like whatever I put on, but I wanted to look nice. That's a lie. I wanted to look hot so that when I saw Tara, and I know that I would, she would see what Jax has now.
I smirked to myself as I pulled on a pair of black lace panties and a matching bra. I wiggled into a pair of skin tight jeans and a low cut red shirt. I threw on a tight leather vest that buttoned just under my boobs. Once I was dressed, I looked at myself in the mirror. Jax was going to love it. I pulled the towel from my hair and let it fall around my shoulders. I scrunched it up so that it was curly and tossed it so it looked messy. I quickly finished my makeup and grabbed my leather boots from the back of the closet.
Before I walked out of the room, I remembered that Jax wanted me to bring him a change of clothes. A small overnight bag was in the closet. I took it and set it on the bed. Jax's side of the closet looked so plain next to mine. It was full of Reaper shirts and a few flannels and dress shirts. I smiled and pulled out a white t shirt that said Reaper on it and smelled it. It smelled just like him. I tossed that, a pair of jeans and boxers into the bag and zipped it up. Lying on the foot of the bed was Jax's cut. I hadn't touched it since the night I brought it home. I slowly ran my fingers over the worn patches and smiled. This was Jax. I smiled and folded it over my arm, on top of my boots, and left the room.

Gemma's eyes started at my face, wandered down, and then met my eyes again.
"Wow." She said.
I smiled and did a spin.
"I guess I'll be watching Abel tonight." She said as she crossed the room.
I raised my eyebrow and tilted my head.
"Why?" I asked her.
She lit a cigarette.
"Because Jax isn't going to be able to keep his hands off of you." She said with a smirk.
I laughed and felt myself flush. Gemma chuckled and picked Abel up, who was crawling around the living room. I pulled on my boots and we left to pick up Jax.
As we pulled up to the hospital, I started to feel anxious. Jax was coming home. I missed him so much, but since everything happened we really haven't had a chance to talk. I pushed those thought back and focused on bringing him home. Gemma parked the car and behind us, I heard the roar of motorcycles. The club had come to bring him home too. I guess it's not every day the Vice President comes home from the hospital. When I stepped out of the car, I had all eyes on me. I blushed, suddenly embarrassed of what I was wearing. Gemma stomped out her cigarette and looked at me.
"Don't be shy, baby. You look good." She said.
She was right. I did look good. I smiled at her and opened the back door to get Jax's things. I could feel their eyes on my ass as I bent over. I chuckled and flung the cut over my shoulder.
"Let's go get him." I said.
The guys cheered and we marched into the hospital. Gemma and I led the way. Our heels clicked in perfect unison as we walked. The guys waited in the waiting room as we went to see Jax. When we walked passed his window, I could see he was anxious to leave. He was sitting up in bed, literally twiddling his thumbs. Gemma nodded to me and I walked through the open door.
"Ready to break out of here?" I asked him.
Jax's mouth fell open as he looked me up and down. If he still had been hooked up to the heart monitor, I'm sure I would've heard it skip beats. I walked further in the room and handed him the bag.
"Come on, get dressed." I said with a smile.
"Damn," He said under his breath.
He got to his feet and unzipped the bag. He took out the clothes and went into the small bathroom to change. A few minutes later, he stepped out without a shirt on. For the first time I saw the real extent of his injuries. His right side was still black and blue and the thick, white gauze was taped on his chest near his collarbone.
"Can you help me with the shirt?" He asked, the shirt in his hands.
It must of hurt to take his other shirt off. I nodded and crossed the room to meet him. He handed me the shirt and I carefully started to put it over his head and shoulders. He winced a few times, but didn't say much.
"You look amazing, McKayla." He said softly.
I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"Thank you."
He smiled back and put his arms around me. I gently put mine around him, not wanting to hurt him.
"Oh! I almost forgot." I said, pulling away.
He looked at me confused as I went back to the chair by the bed.
"I promised that I would help you put it on." I said.
In my hands was his cut. I could see the relief in his eyes when he saw it. It was such a big part of him. It wasn't just a piece of leather, it was his life. Jax turned around and I eased the cut up his arms and onto his shoulders. He pulled the front to adjust it and faced me. His hands cupped my face and he kissed me. It was hard, and longing.
"I love you." He said against my lips.
"I love you, too."
The doctor came in with a wheelchair.
"Alright Mr. Teller, all ready to go?" He asked.
I saw his face change a bit when he saw the cut, but he said nothing. Jax pointed to the chair.
"You're kidding right?" He said.
The doctor shrugged.
"It's recommended, in case you should fall before leaving the grounds." He said.
Jax shook his head.
"No thanks doc, I think I'll be fine." He said.
I looked at the doctor and shrugged.
"Thank you for everything." I told him, extending my hand.
The doctor smiled and put his hand in mine.
"You're welcome. Take care of him." He said.
I nodded and Gemma appeared behind the doctor. She snorted.
"Yeah, good luck with that doc." She said, looking at the chair.
I giggled and the three of us walked down the hall. Jax put his arm around my shoulder as we walked. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tara standing at the nurse's station. I smirked and wrapped my arm around Jax's waist. He pulled me tighter to him and kissed my temple. Tara saw this and turned away. I had won.
From the waiting room we could hear the guys getting restless.
"How long does it take to be discharged?" Clay asked.
"Not too long, Jax probably had to bang McKayla as soon as he saw her." Tig replied.
Just then, we entered the room. Clay shook his head and rose to meet Jax.
"My boy." He said with a grin.
My stomach turned and I looked away. I was still furious at Clay, but that would have to wait. Today was a happy day. Clay hugged Jax gently and then the rest of the guys took their turns.
"Let's get outta here." Jax said finally and we crammed into the elevator.
"We were gonna bring your bike, but we didn't know if you could ride yet." Chibs said when we got outside.
Jax sighed and shook his head.
"Not for a few more days. The doc wants to make sure the stitches aren't going to rip again." Jax said.
I could hear the sadness in his voice. The guys were quiet. It was like Jax told them he'd never ride again.
"It's just a few days." I said.
They all looked at me like I was crazy. I shook my head and Jax and I got into Gemma's car.
"Where to baby?" Gemma asked him.
Jax looked back at me from the front seat.
"Home." He said with a smirk.
I smiled and looked out the window.
"I thought so. Abel is at the clubhouse, I'll keep him tonight." Gemma said.
Jax smiled and kissed his mother's cheek.
"Thanks, Ma." He said.
We pulled in the driveway and got out of the car. Gemma beeped the horn at us and we waved. Once we got inside, Jax pushed me up against the door.
"I want you. Now." He said.
He didn't ask and I didn't care. In a second, his lips were on mine and my arms were around his neck. With his arm he lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist as he carried me back to the bedroom. He tossed me on the bed and pulled my boots and pants off. His hands trailed up my legs and he took a deep breath. I sat up on my knees and unbuttoned the vest. Jax slid it off my shoulders and ran his strong hands up my chest. He gripped the shirt in front of my breasts and with a quick movement; he tore it down the middle. I was gasping for air. I realized I wanted him just as badly as he wanted me. Jax tossed the rags of the shirt on the floor and I took off my bra. He climbed onto the bed and rolled onto his back. I took his pants off and straddled his hips.
"I love you." He said.
His eyes were looking straight into my soul as I sank onto him.
I bit my lip and threw my head back.
"I love you, too."
