《Wake Up Δ Walker》chapter thirteen

They're in detention and Trey is in the hallway on the phone. Colton is at a table by himself, Todd and Stella are at the same table but on opposite ends of it. August and Janie are at the same table, sitting diagonal of each other.

"I just want to point out that I'm here in detention because I got punched in the face." Colton says.

"What? No, no, no. You almost ran over my sister with your car." August says.

"No, no. She accused me of doing something I didn't do." Colton says.

"And that was your response?" Stella asks. "I was wrong but so were you for what you said."

"Can we just skip to the end of The Breakfast Club?" Todd asks. "You know, where all the archetypes start to get along?"

"Archetypes?" Colton asks.

"You know, the cool girl..." Todd says, looking at Stella. "The film geek..." He looks at August.

"Music is-is more my jam now." August says.

"The introverted loner." Todd motions to Janie.

"Excuse you?" Janie looks at him questioningly.

"Well, we know you lean more towards the introverted side on the ambivert scale. And, what, you have friends outside your twin brother?" Todd asks.

"Oh, I'm gonna--" Janie gets up to attack him, but August kicks her shin making her sit down.

"The beautiful idiot." Todd says, referring to himself.

"Oh, please." Janie whispers, rolling her eyes.

"Okay, you have got to stop calling yourself that." Stella says.

"The beautiful, misunderstood idiot." Todd rephrases. Janie dramatically rolls her eyes. "And..." He points at Colton.

"The one who shouldn't be here." Colton says.

Trey hangs up, walking back in.

"Okay. There seems to be some communication issues that we need to..." Trey stops, looking at the twins' table. "August." He calls, getting the boy's attention. "Eyes on me."

August sighs, turning his chair around so he's facing Trey.

"There seems to be some communication issues that we need to deal with." Trey says. "So, change in plans."

"Field trip?" Todd asks.

"No, Todd. We're going to do a training exercise. Something I picked up in the military." Trey says.

"Oh, God." Janie mumbles, letting out an almost inaudible groan.

"On your feet. Let's go!" Trey orders. They all reluctantly get up, following Trey.

They follow Trey who leads them onto the football field.

"It's all about trust, a failure to communicate. So... we're gonna work on a little team building." Trey says, receiving collective groans from the 5 teens. "All right, all right, all right. Calm down. Alright? August, Janie, Todd, you're gonna be in locker room one. Stella and Colton, locker room two. You like those signs? I made 'em."

"Now, each room has several doors. Obviously, these doors right here are already unlocked. But there's gonna be one door on the inside that is locked. And the key is hidden in your respective rooms." Trey informs.

"So it's like an escape room." August says.

"Exactly. But one built on trust. Communication. Now, look, you're more than welcome to just walk right outside these open doors and go back to detention for the next six hours. Or... you find the key, unlock the door, and you're free to go home."

"Are there any more clues?" Todd asks.

"Only that the history with your partner holds the key." Trey says. "All right, let's go!" They all trudge to their assigned locker rooms.

"Ugh! I wonder how long we'll smell like socks." Todd says.

"I'm taking, like, 19 showers when I get home." Janie states. "Why are guys so gross?" She mumbles.

"Hey!" Todd and August exclaim.

"What, like I'm wrong?" Janie asks before turning to August. "I share a bathroom you. You're not exactly Sheldon Cooper here or anything."

"Where's this key?" August mumbles.

"So, uh, what's with Colton?" Todd asks. "His family and yours don't get along?"

"Yeah. Our grandma broke up with their grandpa and then they blamed us for some fire that happened, like, decades ago." August informs.

"Oh. Abby the heartbreaker, huh?" Todd says. "Guess it runs in the family." August looks at him confused. "Ruby. Spirit week last year. You know she ditched me for you, right?"

"Yeah. I'm... I'm really sorry about that, dude." August says.

"Ah, no. Not your fault, man." Todd says. "We were all better when we were friends." August nods.

"Heads up." August tosses a towel at him.

"Oh, dude." Todd throws the towel into the dirty laundry basket as the twins laugh.

"You know, Coach Trey said that "your history with your partner holds the key." Maybe that's why he paired us together." August says.

"To talk about Ruby?" Todd asks.

"Okay, well, I did not date, crush, nor get my heart broken by Ruby." Janie says.

"Yeah, I... I don't know, maybe-maybe it can help us find the key somehow." August says. "Um... we met in the AV club. And the four of us filmed those games, remember? Look." He points to the shelf full of binders and cases.

"Well, aside from the one you fired me from." Janie mumbles and August gives her a look.

"Oh..." The three walk over to the shelf. "There's hundreds of them."

"Yeah. What was the first one we filmed?" August asks.

"Stafford. I hooked up with one of their cheerleaders." Todd says. "It was memorable."

"Uh, good to know." August says.

"Didn't need to know." Janie says.

August opens the DVD case and they find the key taped on the inside of it.

"Let's go!" Todd exclaims. They do a bro hug before high fiving Janie.

August unlocks the door to find Trey holding a basketball.

"Congratulations! You're free." Trey smiles.

The three teens grin and thank him before rushing out.

Janie, August, and Liam are helping Abilene make the chili for the chili cook-off at the festival.

"Hey, don't we have enough?" August asks Liam who is grating cheese.

"Uh oh. Here we go." Liam mutters.

"I'll let you know when there's enough." Abilene says. "Less talking, more chopping."

"Come on, mawline. We do this chili contest, like, every year." August says.

"Yeah, mom, you've never been this tense." Liam says.

"It's not a life or death situation." Janie jokes.

"Okay, well, this year is different. The winner gets their chili on the menu, so it's a whole different ball game." Abilene says.

"Oh, yeah. This is the first time we're using gran's original recipe, right?" Liam asks. "Huh?"

"Uh-huh." Abilene nods.

"So we're entering the most serious chili cook-off of the year with a completely different process of making the chili? Confident." Janie says and Abilene gives her a look. "I'm joking." She raises her hands in defense, going over to the stove with August.

"Well, let's get to it." Liam says.

"You know, I heard there was a, uh, a $10,000 prize. Maybe we can, like, split it 4 ways." August says.

"I second that." Janie says, pointing to her twin in agreement.

"Since we're helping you out here." August says, both nodding, as Abilene laughs.

"Nice try. But if we win--"

"Uh, when, when you win." Cordell cuts him mother off, walking in the kitchen. "Thank you." He takes a pepper and bites into it.

"How does he do that?" Janie whispers to August who laughs at her facial expression.

"Okay, well, when we win, it'll just be a thrill to see mama's recipe on the menu." Abilene says as Janie walks back over to her.

"So then, Augie and I can have all the money, then." Janie says, smiling. Abilene laughs.

"Again, nice try." Abilene says.

"Oh, we can just put it on there. We own it, right?" August says.

"Oh, it is much more savory if it's earned, kiddo." Abilene says. August walks back over to them, standing between Janie and Liam.

"Right, okay. Uh, Trey's grabbing the brisket." Cordell informs.

"Oh, good, cause I can't really do anything without it." Abilene says.

"Yeah, I know, I know, I know." Cordell says. He looks over at the stove, seeing a small fire because of the oven mitt on the stove. "Hey, hey, hey! Hey!" He takes the oven mitt off, shaking it out.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." August says.

"What's wrong with you? You trying to burn the damn house down?" Cordell yells at him.

"It was just an honest mistake." August says.

"Dad, it was an accident." Janie defends him.

"You got to be more careful." Cordell tells his son.

"Cordell. It's fine." Abilene says. August scratches the back of his head, walking back to his spot between Janie and Liam. Cordell storms out, his parents sharing a look.

"You okay?" Janie quietly asks, lightly nudging August's elbow with hers.

"Yeah. It's fine." August whispers, nodding.

Janie is still in the kitchen with Liam and Abilene. August left a bit ago, partly because of Cordell blowing up at him and then he apologized to him.

"Now we hurry up and wait." Abilene says, keeping the pot on the stove.

"Do I have time to finish my legal brief?" Liam asks.

"Can you do it in 6 hours?" Abilene asks.

"I don't know. Our new district attorney demands thoroughness." Liam says, slight venom in his tone.

"You two are like bathtubs and toasters." Abilene says.

"What?" Liam asks, sharing a confused look with Janie.

"You don't mix." Abilene says.

"Oh." Liam nods in understanding.

"I thought it meant you kill each other." Janie mumbles to her uncle who chuckles.

"So, is she, uh, is she going to the Harvest Fest?" Abilene asks.

"No, thank God. She's down in Del Rio wrapping up a case." Liam says.

"All I'm saying is that, you know, if you are no longer happy at the D.A.'s office, maybe it's time for a change." Abilene says.

"Maybe you're right. On the other hand, I've been shot, branded, nearly blown up. I didn't go through all that to have Denise Davidson run me out of town." Liam says.

"Not town, just the office." Janie jokes, but sees their looks. "I'm joking." Liam lightly rolls her eyes and Abilene shakes her head.

"Smells good, mama!" Cordell calls out.

"Well, it would smell even better if you remembered to bring the..." Abilene trails off as Cordell walks in, bringing out a bag from behind his back.

"Hey." Liam says.

"Paprika! Yeah, that's my boy." Abilene says, taking the bag from him.

"Hey, uh, uh..." Cordell sits across from where Janie is standing. "Gale Davidson has decided to enter the cook-off."

"No." Liam mutters.

Janie winces, knowing her grandmother might explode now.

"Why would she do that?" Abilene asks.

"I invited her. Not on purpose. I invited her to bring her family to the Harvest Fest, and she decided she wants to throw her chili in the ring. I mean, I'm sure it'll be fine." Cordell says.

"Oh? No, it won't. The only thing that Gale Davidson knows how to cook up is trouble, and she's only entering to stir the pot." Abilene states.

Liam and Janie chuckle. Abilene sends a glare their way and they both stop. Liam clears his throat and Janie diverts her attention to the counter, biting her lip.

"All I'm saying is that she has always blamed you for her husband's death. And-and contrary to popular belief, I do not hate her family. I mean, hell, I still place flowers on Marv's grave. But that does not mean that I will allow her to go after my boy again. And so help me God, Cordi if she does--"

"She won't. She won't, mama, she won't." Cordell assures. "I'll see to it."

"Well, I hope you do, son. Or I will." Abilene says. She leaves.

"Guess we got ourselves a competition." Cordell says.

"Or a death match." Janie says. Cordell gives her a bitchface and Liam doesn't look that amused, either. "Nobody in this house appreciates my humor."

"We don't appreciate the random remarks you throw in." Cordell says, smiling at her.

"Well, I'm going to hang out with my twin, because he does." Janie says, sticking her tongue out at the two before leaving.

Abilene, August, and Janie are behind the table, serving up the chili. Liam is getting another pot of it and is walking back when Dan bumps into him right in front of their table, some of the chili spilling onto Liam's apron.

"Oh, my God. I'm such a klutz." Dan says. "I'm so sorry, William."

"What the hell?" Bonham asks, walking up to them.

"I must've tripped. I'm sorry." Dan says.

"You know what, I would accept that if it was actually an accident." Liam says.

"Excuse me?" Dan asks. "Are you suggesting that I did that on purpose?" Dan asks.

"Oh, I'm suggesting, Daniel, that you watch where you're walking." Liam says as Cordell tries to clean some of the chili off of his apron with a towel. "Or else did you forget what happened last time?"

"Oh, no, I remember your cheap shot." Dan says. "And I'm happy to go outside and I finish what you started."

"Hey, hey!" Bonham yells, the group turning to him. "Why don't you take a run at me, Jethro, see how that works out for you."

"Dad! Daddy, dad, dad." Cordell tries to diffuse the situation.

"No, don't "dad' me, damn it. They started it, and I ain't having it." Bonham states.

"Okay, boys, settle down. This is supposed to be a friendly event." Gale says, standing between Liam and Dan.

"Until you entered." Abilene says as Liam stands behind the table again.

"Okay, how about this? Uh, in order to resolve this squabble, let's, uh, let's spice it up by upping the ante." Gale suggests.

"Good. You can start by paying for Liam's dry cleaning." Abilene says.

"Mama." Cordell tries.

"Look, clearly we are the front-runners, so what would you say to, I don't know, 5,000 more dollars? You Walkers have more than enough." Gale says.

"Okay, Gale, you're on." Abilene states.

"All right." Gale smiles.

"Death match." Janie whispers to August who nods in agreement.

+++

"All right, folks, listen up. We are down to just two chilis." Geri announces. "We've got Abby Walker's... and Gale Davidson's." The crowd cheers for the two. "So, this is gonna be a blind tasting. Winner takes all."

Geri puts a handkerchief over Cordell's eyes so he can't see which one he's tasting. Cordell tastes Abilene's chili first before tasting Gale's. He takes a few moments to decide before holding up the bowl of chili that contains Gale's chili. The crowd applauds.

"And the winner is Gale Davidson and her chili, the Barn Burner." Geri announces. A guy walks over with a giant check and another person gives Gale a trophy.

"Oh, thank you." Gale smiles. They get a few pictures taken. Geri hands Gale the microphone. "Thank you, y'all. Hey, thank... um, hang on. Just hang on one second." Gale steps onto the stage where the band was performing. Here we go. Ooh. Okay. Ah, I would like to thank my opponent for making this such a stiff competition. Yeah, right there." Everybody claps.

"I would also like to thank the Walker family as a whole. Truth is, you are the reason I stand before you tonight. You know, when my late husband Marvin was taken from us and, um, we had to leave town, I, uh... I never thought I'd see Austin again. My life stopped for a minute there, but here we are. A grand return if I do say so myself."

The crowd cheers and applauds.

"Yeah. Oh, thank you. Uh... and so, um, in the spirit of giving, our family has decided to reinvest our winnings back into the community by building a horse rescue for any beautiful stallion or strong mare in need of a home. Yeah. Yeah." The crowd cheers.

"Thank you. My grandson has single-handedly been caring for a wounded horse." Gale says, going on to talk about how Colton is helping the horse.

"The hell?" Janie quietly questions, knowing Stella is also responsible for helping the horse. August shrugs.

"While others have turned this animal away, we will see that it is delivered to the rescue and sheltered for the rest of its days." Gale states. Everybody applauds. "Yeah. Thank you."

"I might punch somebody." Janie quietly says to August.

"Now that the Davidsons are back, I promise you we will not fault this city. Thank you." Gale says and the crowd claps and cheers.
